HOW A WEBSITE WORKS?

2. What is a website?
 A location connected to the Internet that maintains
one or more web pages.
 Web pages are written in HTML.
 A markup language is a computer language that
describes the layout, format and content of a page.
 E.g. http://www.cool.org.in

3. What is Web Server?
 Web servers are computers that deliver (serves
up) Web pages.
 Accessed by using IP address.
 Can be accessed by using domain name.
 Ports – 80, 443, 21
 http://www.cool.org.in
 https://www.facebook.com
 ftp://cool.org.in

4. What is Domain Name?
 The part of a network address which identifies it as
belonging to a particular domain.
 Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of
the Domain Name System (DNS).
 Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name.
 The first commercial Internet domain name, in the
TLD com, was registered on 15 March 1985 in the
name symbolics.com by Symbolics Inc., a computer
systems firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
 Top level domain
 Second-level and lower level domains
 Internationalized domain names

 The activity or business of providing storage space
and access for websites.

6. What it needs to host a website?
 Web Hosting – Disk Space, Bandwidth, FTP/Web
Access, Database Access, Supported Languages,
Supported File Formats, Uptime, Reliability, Speed,
Security, Customer Service, Price.
 Domain Name – To access website on WWW.
 Web Pages – HTML output, can use any server side/
scripting language.
