My Experience with the Brooklyn Nets
This summer, I had the privilege of interning for the Brooklyn Nets Entertainment
Department. I worked with the entertainment teams that perform throughout the game
and during halftime: the Brooklynettes (the dancers), Team Hype (the break dancers and
dunkers), and the Brooklyn Nets Kids (the kids dance team). My three most important
goals and responsibilities during this experience were how to effectively run an audition,
understand the roles of specific people and how different departments work, and how to
leverage social media. I successfully worked all three auditions, with no gliches, so I can
confidently say I met this goal. I tried to meet as many Brooklyn Nets employees at the
office as I could; however, I was not able to meet all of them. So, I’m planning on connecting
with them on LinkedIn and contacting them sometime this year. In terms of social media, I
did a lot of research for my boss on how to improve Team Hype’s Instagram account. There
are number of tips out there on how to get more followers; however, I summarized the 15
most interesting and effective facts that I discovered and shared it with my boss.
The connection between what I learned in this experience and what I learned in the
classroom is that sports are entertainment; and how social media can be used to
successfully advertise and promote brands. In Mass Communications last semester, we
talked about how sports are entertainment and how prevalent social media is nowadays. I
think Digital Communications—which I am taking in the fall—will be helpful to improve
my success in future internships.

The three most important abilities and skills that I developed as a result of this
experience were: 1) I helped plan and execute auditions for all the entertainment teams; 2)
I was responsible for the exceptional experience for our guests and current dancers; and 3)
I exhibited my teamwork skills by being proactive on tasks as well as finishing them within
a required timeframe. This is how I’ll present this information on my resume:
Helped plan and execute auditions for Brooklynettes, Team Hype (break dancing
team), and Brooklyn Nets Kids.
Responsible for exceptional experience for our guests and current dancers by
assuring they were taken care of by making food and coffee runs, and any errands
which allowed my supervisor to spend time on higher priorities.
Exhibited my teamwork skills by being proactive on tasks as well as finishing them
within or before required timeframe.
I had great communication with both my supervisor and co-workers throughout the
summer. I constantly was in contact with them either via e-mail or text message, and I
always asked questions when I was uncertain of anything. What I learned about work
group interactions and communications is that listening to one another is key; everyone
has great ideas, but by listening to one another, everyone’s great ideas can be combined
to one better idea. I would rather be a part of a team with close supervision and
interaction because I work best with other people. I believe that way more can be
achieved with a team than just by oneself.

The most rewarding aspect of this internship was ensuring that all the auditions I
worked with ran smoothly. Although all of the auditions were a little stressful at times,
it was an amazing feeling knowing that I contributed to the success we had.
This internship experience stretched and changed me because it was different from
anything I have ever done. And I learned a lot about event planning which I think was
really interesting. Although it may not be the exact field that I would like to pursue in
the future, I enjoyed all the work related events that I participated in. Those events
were a lot of fun and didn’t feel like work at all.
After this internship, I feel a lot more confident with the working environment and I
now know that I can figure anything out with critical thinking skills. I was never too
stressed, but I was definitely bored at times when I had nothing to do. I was very
comfortable with deadlines, and realized that I prefer a mix of tasks every day.
This internship helped me get a better idea of where I want to take my career—and
that is definitely in sports. Ideally I would like to get into sports marketing for any
professional team, or athletic company. However, I also would consider continuing
working with the entertainment and game presentation departments.
A specific challenge I encountered during my internship was doing all of the errands
the department needed: like getting coffee and food, handing out audition flyers across
New York City, and getting anything else my boss needed for events. Since my boss was
pregnant and I was the only intern of the department, I had to do a lot of the dirty
work—which I did not enjoy, but understood it was part of being an intern and I will
probably experience that in any entry level position once I am hired at a full time job..

However, I never got upset with my boss and did whatever she told me to do. In the
end, I know my boss really appreciated my hard work.
