8. APPALACHIAN GLOBAL SYMPOSIUM
Present your international experiences to an academic audience!!!
The third annual Appalachian Global Symposium will take place on Wednesday
November 18 - an interactive and engaging day for sharing insights, ideas, artistic
products and findings from your Global learning experiences. This year's symposium will
be a one-day event focused on developing global competencies through class projects,
travels, research and collaborations between faculty, staff and students.

9. 2015 PERU SUMMER STUDY ABROAD:
ANDEAN SOCIETIES AND ENVIRONMENTS
July 6 to July 25, 2015
GHY 1011: Global Climate Change (4 hrs)
GHY 3140: Andean Mountain Geography (3 hrs)
This 17-day intensive program introduces students to Global Climate Change and Andean Mountain
Geography through direct field experience and research activities, readings, discussions, and meetings with
guest speakers. Field excursions to Machu Picchu and other locations in the Sacred Valley and an 8-day
trek in the Cordillera Vilcanota (with strenuous ascents to over 17,000 ft) will provide an outstanding
setting for the study of Andean human-environment interactions and the impacts of climate variability
and change on tropical glaciers, ecosystems, and human populations.

10. SUMMER STUDY ABROAD IN ICELAND
The DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY
Invites you to join this summer's
study abroad expedition to Iceland
(July 22nd - August 6th).
You will get up close and personal with volcanoes, glaciers, geothermal
hotsprings and other fantastic geologic features and processes.

11. BUSINESS, SOCIETY AND SUSTAINABILITY
IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON
Students will fly from Charlotte to Manaus, in the
heart of the Brazillian Amazon jungle, where the
group will spend the first four days of the program.
During that time students will visit the rier port and
study the impact of the free-trade designation on the
local and national economy. The time in Manaus will
also include meetings with an ASU partner university,
Universidade do Estado do Amazonas; meetings with
Brazilian research institutes focusing on sustainable
development of the Amazon and its biodiversity; and
a visit to a controversial hydroelectric generating
plant in the jungle. After the time in Manaus, the
group we will travel by riverboat to visit communities
along the riverbanks and participate in sustainability
related projects. After a night in hammocks on the
boat, students will spend 2 days at a jungle eco-lodge
where they will participate in jungle hikes, piranha
fishing, and nighttime alligator spotting
Dates: June 22nd to June 30th, 2015
Class: BUS 3530: Business, Society and
Sustainability in the Brazilian Amazon
(3 credit hours).
Cost: $3,400.00 (plus summer tuition)
