5. Speed Networking - Explanation
Objective of the exercise: An informal networking exercise. A chance for participants to
introduce themselves in a quick and energetic fashion. Unconventional – fun!
What you will need: Your pen and notepad to jot down notes. Also bring your contact
information sheet (in your folders) if it helps you remember people's names.
How it works: Find a seat in one of the chairs in the back of the room. You will sit across
from another person. Over the course of the next 45 minutes or so, you will get a chance
to introduce yourself to every participant. It will be a chance to get to know the other
participants, and should be a fun ice breaker.
6. Speed Networking - Rules
Rules: You will have one (1) minute to introduce yourself to the person sitting across
from you, and they will have one (1) minute to introduce themselves.
When the signal is made, you must stop your conversation and move to the seat on your
RIGHT. Keep moving! If you are worried you will forget to tell the other person
something, use your pen and notepad to write down a reminder.
You will do this until you have introduced yourself to every participant in the room. Use
your contact information sheet to help you remember people's names, or jot down notes
and reminders on your notepad.
7. Speed Networking – What to say in 2 minutes
How can I possibly introduce myself so many times? Don't worry! You're all in the same
situation. You'll begin to develop creative ways of presenting yourself to others.
- Don't worry if you speak longer or shorter than the other person – each conversation
will be different.
- You can speak the whole time or share the 2 minutes – it will likely vary with each pair.
- Try to find a connection with the other person (organisational activities, countries of
origin, common acquaintances, personal interests, etc.)
- Understand how your job may fit in to your partner's work activities. Perhaps you could
even suggest a networking opportunity with someone you've spoken to previously.
- Have a conversation and learn about each new connection as both an individual and
professional (who they are, what they do).
