Purpose
1. Purpose
Like most if not all films, the main purpose was to sell out and make money.
Apart from the main purpose, it was also to terrify a bunch of people which is the
regular translation for entertain in the context of horror movies. In an
educational sense, the movie does seem to have the intention to tell the audience
not to enter random caves.
Genre
The genre of this film is horror and this is made clear by the dark scenery, use of
monsters and poorly executed jump scares. Apart from horror, this film also has
the theme of relationships and betrayal, which become apparent at the beginning
and end. At the start, it is made clear that Juno and Sarah’s husband are in love
however Sarah only finds out at the end and does not take it like a reasonable
human being. This movie also could be placed under a tragedy genre, as the cave
is the girls’ own titanic and the car crash only contributes towards this more.
Form
The film is in the form of a film rather than a book because the story itself would
be very short and would not work as text. The main horror in the film comes
from the jump scares and the majority of the scenes are too dark to be described,
therefore if this story were to be in a different form of media, it would seriously
lack in basically everything as a book cannot have repeated quotes such as
“Nothing continued to happen in the darkness as the girls aimlessly tried to see”
due to the simple fact that the book would be extremely boring. The way
anything involving crawlers in the film is set out works well as a movie as they
would not be able to scare someone unless they were to see them in the correct
lighting for a short duration of time therefore the best form for this story is a
movie however some parts such as the end are not set out too well as a movie
cannot just verbally inform the audience what is going on therefore the
contrasting scenes do not work well when as they leave the audience confused
and ruins the whole horror effect.
2. Meaning
The blue lighting in the film represents how cold the girls feel when water is
dripping all over and around them making them wet. This creates an unpleasant
theme full of regular things, which would make the audience uncomfortable in a
real life. The girls shout a lot regardless of the fact that they know there are
monsters crawling around the caves hunting for them and this is used to show
the audience that the girls are both in too much of a state of panic to think clearly
and too desperate to escape to care about anything else. While the majority of
the film has no music and fills in the silence with sound effects, some parts have
quiet background music to set the theme of the scene in case the content is not
enough to change the audience’s emotions. Other from this, the fake caves are
used to set the scene of the cave in which the girls are trapped. A lot of editing is
involved to add darkness to the scenes, which is used to demonstrate how
clueless and lost the girls are.
