1. An Explanation of the Total Leader®
Concept
By Merlyn J. Beeman, Executive Vice President
Leadership Management International, Inc.
1. Personal Productivity
Personal productivity is the ability to manage
yourself, manage your time and manage your
priorities to operate at maximum effectiveness.
When others look at this person they see a person that can
execute, can make things happen. They see a person that is
working smart. This individual becomes known as an expert.
I am sure you have had participants point (figuratively
speaking) to upper management and say, “They need this.”
Total Leaders must be able to manage themselves or they
really cannot manage others.
2. Personal Leadership
Personal leadership is the ability to lead yourself,
to be a leader of your own life. Most people just let
life happen to them and then suffer the consequences.
Personal leaders determine the life they want, and then
through planning and action make it happen. Personal
leadership also means becoming a Total Person®
– growing and developing in all six areas of life.
PersonalLeadership means you are living with purpose. You
are an achiever in all areas of your life. When a person
reaches this level they can influence others. Until then, it is
very difficult to influence others. If a person wants to make
things happen intheircompany they need to be a Total Leader.
If they cannot lead themselves, they cannot effectively lead
others.
2. 3. Motivational Leadership
Motivational leadership is the ability to lead and
motivate others. A motivational leader understands
that people are the source of all progress and
innovation, and thus the key to success in the 21st
century. A motivational leader is able to help people
develop and utilize more of their full potential.
At this level leaders can begin to build unique relationships.
They can begin to get things done through others. They are a
true catalyst in their organization. For all practical purposes
they are a leaderin name onlyuntil they get to this point. How
do they get to this point? They must learn to manage
themselves and leadthemselves. This is why the Total Leader
process begins with EPP followed by EPL. It is very difficult to
lead and motivate others until you can lead and motivate
yourself. Unless the followers can see it in their leader, the
leaderhas a very difficult time with organizational goal-setting
and communication.
4. Strategic Leadership
Strategic leadership is the ability to lead an
organization. A strategic leader is able to define and
develop the purpose and vision of the organization, the
key strategies, the optimum structure, the right people
in the right roles, and the most effective processes for
an organization to succeed.
Now that the first three steps are in place thereis some real
strategic thinkingthat can happen. The course can be charted.
There can be strategic direction. Synergism happens.
