TÜV BSR Technology Comparison
Hydraulic: Traditional hydraulically actuated 4Posters have been in
use successfully for many decades and have been instrumental
to OEM achievement of BSR performance improvement.
Hydraulic 4Poster technology is mature and may complement
existing maintenance infrastructure at the OEM site, thereby
making it a good choice in some cases.
SEA: Servo-Electric Actuator technology (sometimes called
Electro-Magnetic Actuation) is a far ‘greener’ approach than the
traditional hydraulic systems. The SEA 4Poster system does not
contain large quantities of hydraulic oil with the potential for high
pressure line and/or hose rupture along with the associated risk
of Environmental concerns and costly HazMat clean-up.
TÜV SÜD Corporate Presentation Slide 14
8. TÜV BSR Technology Comparison
SEA uses far less energy which pays back every year.
On average SEAs use 80-90% less energy than
comparably sized servo-hydraulic systems,
considering a two shift assembly plant operation. For
these reasons as well as superior performance, OEMs
like GM, Ford and Nissan are choosing TÜV-
integrated SEA technology for road simulation, quality
control and new model launch needs.
TÜV SÜD Corporate Presentation Slide 15
TÜV BSR Technology Comparison
SEA: There are several performance advantages
to the SEA 4Poster versus hydraulic:
Scalability: component level to full vehicle electric
actuators
Higher velocities at higher forces
RMS error is over 18X more accurate
3+X higher frequency response
5+X more energy efficient
ONE moving part – the forcer, i.e. simpler / more reliable

9. TÜV BSR Experience
TÜV-integrated SEA 4Poster systems delivered since 2010
NAFTA region – Six systems
EU region – Two systems
Including hydraulic systems,
TÜV has TWELVE 4Posters
that we’ve built or refurbished
worldwide since 2008.
We know BSR.

TÜV OnSite BSR Testing Services
Independent Auditing
Complementing TÜV’s BSR equipment range, our technical
BSR experts work at customer sites directly with OEM
engineers and Tier 1 suppliers to provide:
• Fresh eyes evaluation of BSR performance/perceived quality.
• Expertise on BSR phenomena and root cause mitigation
• Application of OEM processes, evaluating effectiveness,
investigating and implementing improvement actions
• Training of plant staff in more effective use of existing tools
• Validation of results with on-road testing/real-world situations
• Documentation of the process, learning from previous
failures, and preventing them in the future
• Capture of Design Lessons Learned to Prevent Recurrence
through feedback to OEM engineering responsible for future
model design guidelines

10. TÜV OnSite BSR Testing Services
• TÜV OnSite BSR experts use temperature & vibration to:
Identify quality concerns and emerging issues
Identify the root cause of BSR concerns
Develop containment and permanent fixes in
collaboration with OEM and supplier engineers
• TÜV supports plant audits and personnel training
• These videos show examples of TÜV OnSite and OEM
BSR team members working with TÜV-built and managed
test systems, respectively:

Vehicle Evaluations
• Static Audits: Function interior accessories, doors inside
and outside, electrical components, and climate control.
• Rough Road Audit: Verify results of plant internal test
procedure.
• 4Poster Audit: Conduct 4Poster audit inside, outside,
and beneath vehicle as well as static functional BSR
audits (e.g. door close).
• Drive Audit: Continuously verify results of internal
testing using real-world surfaces and drive conditions.

12. TÜV OnSite BSR Results: An Example
BSR improved 75%, yet slipped when support from TÜV
was reduced, confirming that sustainable gains require a
two-pronged approach: a) Continuous and vigilant policing
of the system to ensure emerging issues don’t escape, and
b) Design Lessons Learned enshrined in Design Guidelines

Technical Challenges
Establishing parameters to quantify perception of
BSR events
– Test applicability of existing metrics
– Develop additional metrics specifically aimed at
quantifying the perception of BSR phenomena
– Establish Go/No Go criteria
Develop and deploy standardized test procedures
for BSR
- Build consistency across suppliers and
manufacturing plants
