What is mat board
Mat board is a piece of flat,  paper-based

material that is placed over artwork in a frame.
There are many different kinds of mat board, 

so choosing the right one takes a little knowledge.
THE MATERIAL

White: Usually available in acid-free mat boards and won’t yellow or fade. 3. Black: Usually available in acid-free mat boards and won’t dull. 4. Other: Sometimes, the mat board will be dyed to have the same color throughout.
  17. 17. THE PLY Mat board is measured in ply, so you may have 4-ply or 8-ply mat board—which would be 1/16 in. or 1/8 in. In general: the thicker the mat board, the better the quality.
  18. 18. THE QUALITY You will hear a lot of terms thrown around in regards to the quality of the mat board, and some are interchangeable or used as though they are. That’s why it’s important to check the material used for each mat board.
  19. 19. MUSEUM GRADE: Refers to mat board that meets requirements according to ISO 9706 standards, meaning that if cared for properly it will not harm artwork and last for a long time. Generally made from cotton. ARCHIVAL: Can refer to museum-grade mat board, but can also refer to mat board made with alpha cellulose. CONSERVATION GRADE: The same as museum-grade.
  20. 20. ACID-FREE: The paper has a pH of about 7 (neutral). However, it does not mean that it will never become acidic, especially if the lignin has not been removed. LIGNIN-FREE: Lignin is found in wood pulp and causes paper to yellow and become brittle. BU F FERED: Involves the addition of a buffering agent that neutralizes any acid formed in the paper over time.

  22. 22. TH E COLOR Most museum-grade or archival mat boards are available in neutral colors: white, cream, or black. Non-conservation mat boards are available in an assortment of colors. However, the core will be the color of the mat board material itself-generally white, cream, or black.
