Phillip Martin Brown
The character that Phillip Martin Brown plays
is a near retiring age man, who is head of
English at Waterloo Road High, and has been
working as a teacher for many years. He is
slightly scruffy looking, he looks tired and he
has failed to write a novel that he thought to
believe he had in him which makes him lacks
conviction about anything. He is sarcastic
natured which he is often witty with and he
always is able to get a laugh in the staff room
with his colleagues. Phillips character ‘Grantly’
is a very traditional man, as from reading back
from series 4 he
had a rough patch in his marriage, of which he believes
should be forever. Which makes Phillip’s character
unique is that he doesn’t really care about teaching too
much in fact Grantly wants an easy life, and thinks that
school is much nicer place when the children are not
there. Also Phillips character is one for a drink and he
also like to bet on the horse racing.
Rachel Mason – Played by
Eva Pope
Eva Pope’s Character is one of Waterloo Roads young,
attractive and sassy woman, Who is Head Teacher of
this challenging school. Her charater ‘Rachel’ is never

afriad to take risk to devliever quilty education for the poorest sector of society in the
Waterloo Road School. She has s background history of working as a high class
prostitute but she turned her life around and became a teacher, and because of this
history she believes people can change, and has a policy of no exclusions.
Eva’s character is quick witted and can make decision quickly and decisively, but she
is not one for giving orders about the place, instead she would use her skill of
persuasion. She would rather solutions than problems. She prefers to keep her private
life private but from reading back, in series 4 her sister became one of her staffing
team.
Compared to Grantly she seems very organised, in control, happy person, who loves
to help out the children. She dresses smartly where as Grantly seems to have she shirt
collar in and out. However Grantly has one love of his life, his wife where as Rachel
is single and the person she fell in love with got her sister pregnant and Grantly has
very high traditional views. But Rachel is more involves with the pupils and she tries
and helps them as much as she can where as Grantly would rather the children not
there.
