2. Did you know that every year in Serbia more
than 700 000 tons of food end up in landfills?
01.
There are two major problems:
1. Almost half a million people in Serbia are starving every day and for the most of them the services of public kitchens and
donated food are the only meal in the day
2. The process of industrial destruction and landfill disposal of excess food releases large amounts of methane, one of the
most harmful greenhouse gases.
Diversion efforts:
Retailers have taken steps to reduce waste by improving procurement and operating procedures and reducing supply chains
to keep food fresher longer. In addition, they partner with food banks, food recovery agencies, and food rescue groups.
The solution:
By donating this food through the FoodSHare platform we
are able to feed more people while wasting less and
significantly reducing our carbon footprint.
Despite all the efforts grocery retailers make, a
substantial amount of food is still sent to landfills.

7. FAQs
01.
What is the Ploutos
project and how is it
related to FoodSHare?
The Ploutos project is funded by the European Commission under the Research and Development Program - Horizon 2020
and its ultimate goal is to improve the various processes in the agri-food chain. The FoodSHare platform was developed as
part of one of eleven Ploutos pilot projects, taking place in Serbia and North Macedonia. The focus of this pilot project is to
facilitate the transfer of surplus food from farms to socially vulnerable groups.
What is food waste?
Food waste refers to food that is not consumed by the end user. Most common cases of food waste are close to “Best before”
and “Expiration” date, aesthetic reasons and texture, but this food is in its entirety safe for human consumption and thus
suitable for donating.
Who can donate food?
Food and beverage companies, agriculture holdings, distributors, retailers, and other companies that produce, distribute and
sell food. The exception is the HoReCa sector (hotels, restaurants and cafés) which is restricted from food donation in the
Republic of Serbia.
Who can receive food
donations?
Food donation recipients include charities such as food banks, public kitchens and foundations. Then, these organizations will
distribute the donated food to their members, the local community, and others in need.
Who are the
Volunteers?
FoodSHare volunteers provide support for food donations and other activities through the platform, such as transportation.
Why should I register
as a Donor?
With FoodSHare, existing processes for food donation can be automated and improved. By using this simple and effective, yet
free tool, you can save time and money as well as other limited resources. Your company will increase its social responsibility
and reduce its waste disposal by donating food waste to the local community.
Why should I register
as a Recipient?
FoodSHare platform enables fast and simple ways for acquiring food donations. Growing base of donors gives many
opportunities for receiving donations of different kinds as well as equal opportunity for all charity organizations independent
of their size or location.
