WATER
FILTRATION
WATER FILTRATION
IS AN AREA THAT
IMPACTS EVERYONE.
FROM COMMERCIAL
APPLICATIONS TO
UNDER SINK SYSTEMS
WITHIN THE HOME,
THE QUEST FOR PURE
WATER HAS BEEN
A PRIORITY FOR
CENTURIES.
In ancient Greek and Sanskrit writings dating back to
2000 BC, water treatment methods were recommended.
People were aware that heating water might purify it. They
were also educated in sand and gravel filtration, boiling,
and straining. The major motive for water purification was
better tasting drinking water.
After 500 BC, Hippocrates discovered the healing powers
of water. He invented the practice of sieving water, and
obtained the first bag filter, which was called the
‘Hippocratic sleeve’. The main purpose of the bag was
to trap sediments that caused bad tastes or odours.
In today’s world the importance of water and its purity is
crucial. From the mining sector to the food and beverage
industry – effective water filtration is paramount to your
business.
Our comprehensive range of water filtration applications
and our team’s experience and knowledge allow us to
deliver quality pure water solutions for your business from
installation to service.

SIBELCO
Founded in 1872, Sibelco began operation in the
Australian and New Zealand markets in 2000. One of the
world’s largest industrial mineral companies Sibelco has
a network of over 45 mines, plants, sales offices and
warehouses based in Australia. They supply products
to Glass, Mining, Agriculture, Construction and Industrial
Manufacturing industries.
IBC Water has had a long standing partnership with
Sibelco’s Silica Sand manufacturing plant on North
Stradbroke Island. The plant is a floating Concentrator
Vessel which is 60m long by 40m wide designed
specifically for sand mining.

“

combined water system which serves various functions
such as drinking and requirements to manufacturing
processes. The system encompasses Kinetico NonElectric Filters which includes a pH neutraliser, a water
softener and multimedia filters to manage the 15,000
litres a day usage requirements. Incoming water pressure
drives the Kinetico system meaning the system is only in
operation when water is needed; saving on power.
The entire system is housed in a 12 sqm plant and is
serviced on a regular basis from our Brisbane plant.
The service involves salt top up as well as a general
maintenance and a water quality check.

The system has exceeded expectations. The team put
forward an innovative solution which saves energy, is reliable
and is saving Sibelco money as we no longer have to buy
water. We also now have the added peace of mind knowing
the system is maintained to exacting OH & S water requirements
for the general health and wellbeing of the employees working
on the Concentrator.

Bob Bell Sibelco, Plant Operations Superintendent

The Concentrator processes 3,000 tons of sand a day
to extract the zircon which goes towards manufacturing
paints, toothpaste, sunscreen, ceramic tiles, touch phones
and digital tablets.

Water quality is maintained in the 3,000 litre holding
tank through an electric UV system. Again this system
is serviced and maintained by our Brisbane Service
Technicians.

Originally IBC Water installed an activated carbon and
sand filter system to treat bore water as it was pumped
from the pond to the Concentrator for general
consumption and washing purposes.

The system now means the staff shifts can confidently
drink and bathe in the water overcoming the need to
transport water to the pontoon and is in operation 24
hours a day, seven days a week.

However, over time various factors such as pond water
chloroforms, general wear and tear and age saw a
deterioration in the end water product. This lead to Sibelco
having to purchase and transport water onto the island
at sizeable costs.

Bob Bell highlighted that “The system has exceeded my
expectations. The team put forward an innovative solution
which saves energy, is reliable and is saving Sibelco
money as we no longer have to buy water.

In late 2012, Sibelco again approached IBC Water to
discuss how to best upgrade their water system. Bob Bell,
the plants Operations Superintendent, brief was to design
and install a system to meet OH & S regulations and the
needs of the Concentrator’s crews without environmental
impacts to North Stradbroke Island.
Now under the ownership of Continental Water, the
team designed, built and now service a comprehensive

SYSTEMS
ELECTRIC OR KINETICO NON-ELECTRIC

WHY AN ELECTRIC SYSTEM?
An electric system allows you to set the time and
frequency of the back wash and gives you full control
of your water filtration system.

WHY USE A KINETICO NONELECTRIC SYSTEM?
Continental Water is a close distribution partner with
Kinetico – the world pioneer in non-electric filter systems.

This is crucial in numerous industries and applications
such as labs and hospital scenarios, laundries and food
and beverage manufacturing.

A Kinetico non-electric system has the same qualities and
attributes of an electric system but runs on water pressure
to drive all functions of the Kinetico valve.

All of our electric valves feature;
• Seven day timer for time based backwashes
or
• Microprocessor for volume based backwash

A Kinetico non-electric system is ideal when a system is
not running to a strict regime as it saves both water and
power. It can be used in remote areas which don’t have
access to power or an application that does not require
backwashing at a set time throughout a 24 hour period.
The Hydrus Valve is a non-electric 50mm valve, (the
standard non-electric valve is 32mm) the first top mount
control that regenerates in a counter current format right
out of the box. It reduces salt use by more than 30% which
delivers additional cost savings and efficiencies. It works
in conjunction with a Kinetico non-electric water system.

WHICH FILTER
SYSTEM IS BEST
FOR YOU?

12

Both an electric and a Kinetico non-electric system
supports the following applications;
• Single or multi tank configurations
• Water softening
•	Filtration
• Ion exchange
• Deionisation systems
• Co-current or counter current regenerations

CONTENTS

Hydrus Valve features;
•	Non-corrosive
• No motors
• Hydraulic operation
• No limit-switches
• Lead free
• No cams
The Hydrus Smart Start is the perfect complement to
a Hydrus non-electric system. It is a controller that can
operate your entire system to a range of specifications
and configurations.

TANK MEDIA
WHICH IS BEST FOR YOUR APPLICATION?
6. NEXTSAND

One media type does not fit all filtration requirements. We offer a diverse range of media options
to suit a broad range of industries from resin
Deionisation systems to Kinetico Macrolite media.

Nextsand filtration is a high-purity form of filtration,
filtering down to a credible 3 micron (nominal 5), and
provides a higher solid loading, longer running times,
superior performance and long bed life in comparison to
multi media. The hardness, stability and micro porous
character of Nextsand makes it a perfect filtration media
for virtually every application in the water and wastewater
treatment industry.

We can create a customised solution to suit any
budget, industry or operation size.

1 KINETICO MACROLITE
.
Macrolite is a ground breaking filtration media which
provides the best filtration performance and high filtration
rates. The granular, ceramic media offers filtration superior
in comparison with more traditional aggregates such as
sand and multi media.

1 2

7. DMI-65
DMI-65 is an effective media in the removal of iron and
manganese from raw water, by acting as an oxidisation
channel allowing immediate oxidisation and removal
of the insoluble precipitate. It performs well within a wide

The end result for you? A system that will improve water
quality, lower operating costs and reduce waste
discharge volumes.
Features;
• Filters to 5 micron
• 100 x surface area to sand
• Removes more turbidity
• Holds solids longer than traditional medias
• More particle removal at very low micron levels
• Reduced media weight reduces backwash flow rates
• 100 % bed expansion at a flow rate 2/3 or less than
other filter types

2. CARBON
Carbon filtration is a common method of removing
unwanted tastes and odours caused by chlorine, organics,
chemicals, herbicides, pesticides and algae. Removal of
chlorine is necessary before a reverse osmosis system
and water softener treatment as these processes are not
tolerant to chlorine. Unlike other forms of media filtration,
carbon will also partially remove tannin or organic colours.
One litre of carbon has roughly the surface area of a
football field, therefore quite extensive runs from the
carbon bed can be realised before replacement is required.

3. CALCITE
Calcite is a crushed and screened white marble material
used to neutralise low pH water to a neutral non-corrosive
state. Upon contact with calcite, acidic water slowly
dissolves the calcium carbonate media to raise the pH
level, which subsequently reduces the potential leaching of
copper, lead and other metals typically found in plumbing
systems. However, in some circumstances calcite will add
hardness to the water supply and a water softener may be
required. Calcite filtration is an efficient neutralising filter.

4. MULTI MEDIA
Multi Media filtration is used primarily to remove
sediment down to a nominal 25 microns by collecting
particles and flushing the waste during the backwashing
process. The filter has a five-strata bed; the system
consists of 5 different filtration media from coarse gravel to
fine sand.

14

pH range of 5.8 up to 8.6, and also achieves efficient
filtration under high operating temperatures up to a
maximum of 45˚C.

8. BAG FILTERS
Bag filtration offers a solution to traditional forms
of filtration whilst maintaining cost effectiveness and
versatility for a range of applications. The housing is made
from durable and hard-wearing polypropylene or stainless
steel with UV resistant properties. The filtration process
works by water entering the unit through the inlet manifold
and passing into the top section of the bag housing,
through the internal filter bag, leaving through the lower
outlet manifold. The degree of filtration is determined
by the micron rating of the bag installed.

3 4

TANK CONFIGURATIONS
SIMPLEX (SINGLE)
This system uses raw water to regenerate or backwash.
This configuration is the most economical to purchase
and the most space efficient; however, operational costs
and waste production is not the lowest. Additionally
it does not produce the best water quality. This system
has a a flow rate ranging from 8 to 360 LPM.

5 6

TRIPLEX (TRIPLE)
As with a Duplex system, this configuration uses soft
or filtered water to regenerate. This system is ideal for
continuous high flow rate applications where water
quality and regeneration efficiency is vital, such as
chlorine production, batch filling operations, boiler
feed and other critical applications. The Triplex design
effectively regenerates one tank at a time with only
a minimal pressure drop. A Triplex system has a flow
rate ranging from 200 LPM to 1,000 LPM.

DUPLEX (DUAL)
Uses soft or filtered water to regenerate. This
configuration is suited for intermittent higher flow
designs needed by laundries, hotels, motels and large
food and beverage preparation facilities. Duplex flow
rates range from 100 LPM to 700 LPM.

7 8
1. Kinetico Macrolite magnified 100x 2. Carbon 3. Calcite 4. Multi-media
5. Greensand 6. Nextsand. 7. DMI-65 8. Bag Filters

5. MANGANESE GREENSAND FILTERS

MULTI TANK
Again uses soft or filtered water to regenerate or
backwash. This configuration delivers high flow rates
with almost no backwash detectable pressure drops
during regeneration or backwash. The design offers
high salt efficiency and the softest water possible.
A Multi Tank system has flow rates from 60 LPM to
1500 LPM.

Manganese Greensand is a naturally occurring
glauconite mineral of marine origin. The singular nodular
grains of glauconite are washed, graded, stabilised and
coated with manganese oxide. This media has the ability
to attract, absorb or dissolve iron, manganese and
moderate levels of hydrogen sulphide in raw water. This
type of filtration requires regeneration to occur on a regular
basis with potassium permanganate, which oxidises or
precipitates the mineral bed of absorbed iron, manganese
and hydrogen sulphide. These are then removed during
the backwashing or rinsing process. A level below 7pH will
strip the media rendering it useless. pH correction by way
of soda ash dosing is recommended.

INDUSTRIES

WATER
SOFTENERS
WATER IS REFERRED
TO AS “HARD” IF IT
CONTAINS A LOT
OF CALCIUM AND
MAGNESIUM. GROUNDWATER ACQUIRES
THESE MINERALS BY
DISSOLVING THEM
FROM SURROUNDING
SOIL AND ROCK.
You can easily see the effects of hard water including low
sudsing when using soaps and detergents, which leaves
a residue on skin, clothes and hair. This can lead to red
itchy skin and irritation. But what does this mean for
commercial applications?
Hard water causes dissolved calcium and magnesium
to precipitate out of hard water as scale, which builds up
on the insides of pipes and industrial machinery. Scale
reduces flow through pipes and is a poor conductor of
heat. Eventually, pipes can become completely clogged
and less functional.
Without an effective water softener solution, valuable
production time can be lost in repairs and reduce water
flow rates, plus the life of your production system can be
dramatically shortened.
All water softeners use a process called Ion Exchange
to remove the magnesium and calcium and produce water
which does not leave scale or unwanted residue in your
manufacturing system.
Continental Water Systems offer a broad range of local and
off shore systems to suit every application, budget and
project size. We supply IBC single, duplex and triplex systems
and Kinetico non-electric systems which can be serviced
on a regular basis by our locally based service team.

KINETICO MACH
SERIES

An IBC Water Softener uses Cation resin which will exchange
its sodium with Calcium and Magnesium in the water. This
reaction is reversed in the regeneration process, when at a pre-set
time; brine (saturated salty water) is drawn up from an attached
brine tank and is flushed through the resin to remove the Calcium
and Magnesium to waste.

EXCLUSIVE MACH SERIES
NON-ELECTRIC CONTROL
VALVE
Kinetico delivers an exclusive non-electric control valve which
eliminates the need to adjust, set, repair or replace timers,
computers or electrical components. The Kinetico control valve
simultaneously manages two media tanks through service and
regeneration cycles. Water pressure, not electricity, runs the
system. As water passes through the control valve, a water
turbine meters the amount of water processed by the systems.
The valve automatically initiates regeneration after the
predetermined amount of water has been treated.

FEATURES
• FRP Vessel
• UPVC or ABS pipe work assembly
• Optional galvanised skid mounting
• High quality control equipment and valves
• Option of control head, water actuated,
air actuated or electrical actuated valves
• Potable grade media
• Option of modular integration
• Ex-factory or onsite loading of media for tight spaces
• Brine drawing system with dose rate recommendations
• Brine storage tank

As the system is comprised of two media tanks, soft water can be
used for the complete regeneration process which substantially
improves the system’s efficiency and the product water quality.

SYSTEM UPGRADES
AND OPTIONS
• Kinetico’s Water Softener systems allow your system to grow as
your business expands
• Adjustable meter range based on interchangeable flow nozzles
– from 0.19 LPM and as high as 90 LPM.

SIMPLEX

EXPERIENCE THE KINETICO
DIFFERENCE
Until now, all industrial water softeners have been the same;
they use large amounts of salt to regenerate and simultaneously allow some hard water to leak into service. Kinetico’s
Hydrus water softeners are different.
The Hydrus water softener is the only multi-port system to
use counter current, soft water regeneration right out of the
box. This proven and trusted method of operation results
in up to a 40 percent reduction in salt use when compared
to other units. In addition waste water volumes are reduced
by as much as 30 percent, making Hydrus a more environmentally responsible water treatment product than others.

DUPLEX

Water quality from a Hydrus water softener is significantly
better than the water quality from a traditional co-current
or hard water regenerating system. With a Hydrus system,
hardness leakage will be reduced by as much as 95 percent.

SINGLE-TANK CONFIGURATION
Simplex – Uses raw water to regenerate. This configuration
is the most economical to purchase and the most space
efficient. However, operational costs and waste production
are not the lowest. Additionally, it does not offer the best
water quality.

MULTI-TANK CONFIGURATIONS
Duplex – Uses soft water to regenerate. This design
is suited for intermittent higher flow designs.
Triplex – Uses soft water to regenerate. This configuration is ideal for continuous high flow rate applications
where water quality and regeneration efficiency are vital,
such as chlorine production, batch filling operations,
boiler feed and other critical applications. The Triplex
design effectively regenerates one tank at a time with
only a minimal pressure drop.
Multi-Tank – Uses soft water to regenerate. This system
ensures high flow rates with almost no detectable
pressure drops during regeneration. The design offers
high salt efficiency and the softest water possible.

Membranes for water applications are being highlighted
as a potentially cost-effective option to deliver a range
of purification and separation needs. They can be used
across human, industrial and environmental applications
and make the need for traditional water treatment methods,
such as physical separation techniques, chemical
treatments and evaporation techniques, redundant.
Membrane Technology uses selectively permeable
barriers, with pores sized to allow for the travel of water
molecules but small enough to block the passage of
unwanted particles and compounds.
In 1950, Membrane Technology treatment was introduced
in the desalination treatment of brackish, ground water and
seawater. Continued advances in materials, designs and
process combinations have today seen a big increase in
affordable, chemical free, environmentally friendly
applications across a broad range of industries.

TRENDPAC
Trendpac was established in 1963 and is a 100 percent
Australian family owned business – celebrating its 50th
anniversary it is a continually growing business. Trendpac
offers a full range of manufacturing, packaging and
product development services in the following areas;
• Personal care products
• Household cleaning products
• Industrial cleaning products
• Pet care
• Car care
• Plastic moulding and packaging
Trendpac supplies some of Australia’s biggest supermarket chains and leading multi-national publicly listed
companies. The plant covers 30 acres and is in operation
24/7 producing batches from 2,000 litres to 10,000 litres.
With its own transportation system trucks are continually
shipping product to supply their FMCG customers.
Given the size of the manufacturing plant and production
volumes it is crucial that all supporting systems deliver.

an ultraviolet system and Ozone Oxidiser to eliminate any
bacteria which may have formed while the water was in
storage. The water is then released back into the main
plant production process.

Water is a vital part of the manufacturing process. Without
pure water the products would contain harmful bacteria
which would impact the quality in countless ways, including
shortened shelf life in store, surface contamination from
cleaning products and ultimately loss of credibility of both
Trendpac and the customers they supply.
Continental Water was invited to tender for the
installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system with the
capacity to treat 120,000 litres per day.
The RO system is part of a combined system with the
primary function of supplying a continuous feed of
treated water aligned with Trendpac’s 24 hour production
schedule. An in built self-testing unit regularly tests the
water to maintain optimum purity to prevent unwanted
contaminates entering the production process.

Bob Wright Trendpac, Production Maintenance Manager

Feedback from Bob Wright, Trendpac, Production
Maintenance Manager when asked about the system
was positive, “Continental really delivered, the team
know their stuff. We have a monthly service contract with
Continental who clean and sanitise the RO systems and

Typically are available in a number of different sizes to
meet most flow rate requirements.

6. ULTRAFILTRATION (UF)
A separation process using membranes with pore sizes in
the range of 0.1 to 0.001 micron. Typically, UF membranes
will remove high molecular-weight substances, colloidal
materials, and organic and inorganic polymeric molecules.
Low molecular-weight organics and ions such as sodium,
calcium, magnesium chloride, and sulfate are not removed
by UF Membranes.

ULTRAFILTRATION

Efficient ultrafiltration systems utilise membranes which can
be submerged, are back-flushable, air scoured as well as spiral
wound UF/MF membranes. They offer superior performance for
the clarification of wastewater and process water.

ULTRAFILTRATION IS A SEPARATION PROCESS
USING MEMBRANES WITH PORE SIZES IN THE
RANGE OF 0. TO 0.001 MICRONS. TYPICALLY

ULTRAFILTRATION WILL REMOVE HIGH
MOLECULAR-WEIGHT SUBSTANCES, COLLOIDAL
MATERIALS AND ORGANIC AND INORGANIC
POLYMERIC MOLECULES.
Ultrafiltration, like Reverse Osmosis, is a cross – flow
separation process. Here liquid stream to be treated (feed)
flows tangentially along the membrane surface, thereby
producing two streams. The stream of liquid that comes
through the membrane is called permeate.

upstream from the membrane system to remove relatively
large suspended solids and to let the membrane do the

RO/EDI SYSTEM
This system delivers superior Reverse Osmosis water
purification solutions for the most high end laboratories and
health care requirements.

KINETICO
TL SERIES

The Continental Water RO/EDI system uses resin in a single
bed configuration to deionise water. The deionisation process
significantly reduces the number of bacteria in the water, as the
electrodes that contact the resin create an electric potential that
the bacteria cannot live in. While the pH shift in the cells helps with
the removal of the SiO2 and CO2 and reduces bacterial growth.

COMMERCIAL MEMBRANE

• Resin is continually regenerated without chemicals
• Energy consumption is low saving you on energy bills
• Water quality is constantly maintained
• System designed to have various additional components based
on water purity needs and business growth
• Compact size for easy installation
• CO2 traps for the tank
• UV Oxidisation and disinfection
• Sterile environment
• Finest quality materials used in the manufacturing

WHAT IS THE EVERCLEAN
RINSE SYSTEM?

The TL Series from Kinetico is ideal for high quality
water solutions when space is at a premium and water
conservation is needed. The TL Series features Kinetico’s
patented EverClean rinse.

FEATURES

If your system has a raw water flush or no flush, dissolved
solids travel through the membrane when the system is
idle and appear in the product water upon start-up.
Accelerated membrane fouling also occurs, decreasing
membrane life and increasing maintenance costs.
Kinetico’s patented EverClean rinse eliminates the
potential for low quality start-up water and extends
membrane life. The EverClean rinse is standard on all
TL Series systems.

Salt water is desalinated to produce fresh water suitable
for human consumption or irrigation. One by-product of
desalination is salt. Desalination is used on many seagoing
ships and submarines. Most of the modern interest in
desalination is focused on developing cost-effective ways
of providing fresh water for human use. Along with recycled
wastewater, this is one of the few rainfall-independent
water sources.
Large-scale desalination typically uses large amounts of
energy and specialised, expensive infrastructure, making
it more expensive than fresh water from conventional
sources, such as rivers or groundwater. Desalination is
particularly relevant to countries, such as Australia, which
traditionally have relied on collecting rainfall behind dams
to provide their drinking water supplies.

CONTENTS

The traditional process used in these operations is
vacuum distillation – the boiling of water at less than
atmospheric pressure and thus a much lower temperature
than normal. Because of the reduced temperature,
energy is saved in the desalination process. The principal
competing processes use membranes to desalinate,
principally applying Reverse Osmosis technology.
Membrane processes use semipermeable membranes
and pressure to separate salts from water.
Reverse Osmosis plant membrane systems typically use
less energy than thermal distillation, which has led to a
reductionin overall desalination costs over the past decade.

SEA WATER REVERSE
OSMOSIS
This is a membrane process which does not use heating
or phase changes. As a result energy requirements are low in
comparison to other processes of desalination. The procedure

pre-treatment, high pressure pump, membrane assembly,
remineralisation and pH adjustment, disinfection and control panel.

SYSTEM FEATURES
• SWRO high quality membrane modules
• High pressure and CIP pumps
• CIP tank
• Automated control valves
• Process pressure gauges and flow meters
• Skid mounted pre-filters
• PLC controlled with option of HMI, GSM dialler

DEIONISATION

DEIONISATION IS THE
MOST EFFICIENT
PROCESS KNOWN FOR
REMOVING DISSOLVED
SALTS AND MINERALS
FROM WATER, THE
PROCESS REMOVES
THESE IMPURITIES
BY ION EXCHANGE.
Synthetic ion exchange resin with either hydrogen or
hydroxide ions, release their ions in exchange for the
positively charged cations or negatively charged anions
which may be present in the water supply. An efficient mixed
bed deioniser, combining both cation and anion resins, can
produce water that approaches the theoretical limits of
purity (18.24 megohm-cm resistivity at 25°C).
Mixed bed deionisation utilises only one ion exchange tank
with cation and anion exchange resin mixed to produce an
infinite number of separate ion exchange sites within the
single tank. Water quality from a mixed bed system is much
higher than separate bed, with 18 megohm-cm possible.
In many applications, the mixed bed deionisers are
preceded by separate bed deionisation units in order
to get large volumes of water from units.
In separate bed deionisation, dissolved cations are
removed by direction fed water through a bed of cation
exchange resins. The water flows through a bed of anion
exchange resin to remove the negatively charged fraction of
the dissolved solids in the water. Separate bed deionisation
can remove more than 99% of the dissolve ions in a water
supply, depending on the constituents of the water,
regenerant chemical type, and litres used. Product water
quality from separate bed deionisation systems is typically
within the 1 megohm-cm range, approximately 1 part
per million as CaCO3.
Continental Water can provide any number of systems to
meet your business needs. Our tanks are available in sizes
from 7 litres with a flow rate of 3LPM to 100 litres with a flow
rate of 100LPM. The larger systems can be also be arranged
in parallel to increase flow rates from 200LPM or more.
All of our systems are serviced every 90 days and full
installation and training is included as part of our Service
Deionisation program.

SYDNEY
WATER
SERVICE DEIONISATION
(SDI) IS A KEY PILLAR TO
CONTINENTAL WATER’S
BUSINESS – IN FACT WE
INTRODUCED THE SYSTEM
INTO AUSTRALIA 24
YEARS AGO.
Sydney Water approached Continental Water 10 years
ago with the brief of designing and installing a SDI system
to service their water testing laboratories based in North
Ryde. On a tour of the Sydney Water Laboratories, it
became very apparent that without a reliable system there
could be a very significant impact to water testing and
water quality across Sydney if problems were not identified
due to a laboratory water system failure.
The Sydney Water SDI system starts in the top level of
the building. Located with air conditioning ducts and
computer wiring is their five tank system. Various media

fall below standard, an alarm activates in the laboratories
down stairs to alert staff who can then make a call to
organise a Service Technician to make a same day call.
Charlie Pierce, Laboratory Manager, Analytical Services
told us on our tour “the beauty of the system is that back
up water is stored in a 2,500 litre tank with a polishing
system to maintain Type II water in specific labs. The
drinking water schedule is not impacted prior to a service
call as we have this back up water until the Service
Technician arrives. And trust me, we know when there
is a problem with the system as the alarm is loud!”

are housed in each tank with a specific task. Initially, a five
micron filter removes suspended solids; once the water
passes through this it then goes to an activated carbon
tank which removes chlorine before it goes to a single bed
and then into mixed bed media tank containing DI resin
which removes the final impurities in the water
to generate Type II water.
The tanks generate 40,000 litres of water prior to
replacement tanks being installed by one of our NSW
Service Technicians. However, water quality is tested by
an in built monitor after tank five. If water quality should

The high purity labs are equipped with Siemens Water
Polishers so that any requirement of their rigorous and
demanding drinking water schedule is met with the
combined system from washing equipment to micro testing.
The greatest benefit that Charlie was keen to reinforce is
that the Service Technicians and Administration Support
“are always there within hours of a service call being made”
and always have a solution to resolve any production
issues so that Sydney Water’s schedule is not impacted.

FAQ

ELECTRIC SYSTEMS

DEIONISATION APPLICATIONS

LABORATORIES AND
RESEARCH

HOW IS THE MEDIA
REGENERATED?
All exhausted deionisation resin media is regenerated with
a six-stage process including; separation, backwash,
chemical regeneration, rinse, mix, and fast rinse. Media
backwash removes fines and debris to media bed to
maximise capacity. Regeneration chemical quality
(hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide) is technical
grade or better to assure quality regeneration, and
minimise any contamination from the regeneration
chemicals. Rinse water is processed through regenerated
tanks until residual chemical is flushed from the system
as confirmed by conductivity measurement. All tanks are
thoroughly rinsed to quality specification before leaving
the regeneration facility and prior to activation on-site.

HOW DURABLE AND TRANSPORTABLE ARE THE TANKS?

COSMETIC AND
PHARMACEUTICAL

The tanks are designed for a maximum working
pressure of 860 kPa, hydrostatically tested at 2000 kPa
and de-rated for service to 340 kPa. Tanks are made of
fibreglass-reinforced polyester with a 2½" threaded top
opening. Upper and lower distribution system are of a slot
or mesh strainer design to provide even distribution of
water throughout the exchange column.

WHAT CONDITIONING MEDIA
DO YOU USE?

HOSPITALS AND INSTITUTIONS

Each tank contains around 6.5 litres of high-capacity,
40:60, strong acid cation to strong base anion mixed
bed resin. The media is solid, of uniform particle size
and contains no plates, shells, and agglomerates or
similar that might interfere with the normal function
of the water purification system.

LAUNDRIES

THE SYSTEM?
The system is quick and simple. Inlet and outlet ports
accept a ½" quick connect inert, double “O” ring sealed
adapter. Compression fittings and ferrules suitable for
use with ½" or ¾" high-pressure flexible LLDPE tubing are
used to interconnect pre filtration, deionisation and post
filtration stages and provide for easy replacement and
movement of the tanks.

IS THE WATER PRE TREATED
AND IF SO HOW?
The feedwater supply shall be pressure regulated to
a maximum 350 kPa and made available for connection
through a ¾" or ½" female thread ball valve. Prior to
entering the deionisation resin stages, the feedwater is
pre-treated by passage through a disposable nominal
5 micron filter element (blown polypropylene type) for
sediment removal. Filtered feedwater is then dechlorinated
by passage through a disposable activated carbon filter
element or tank. Both filter elements are contained in filter
housings rated for a maximum working pressure of
860 kPa and de-rated for routine operation to 350 kPa.
Filter housings are interconnected with a ¾" double
thread 3.5 litre per minute flow restrictor.

HOW IS POST FILTRATION
DONE?
Product water exiting the Deionisation system is filtered
to a nominal 1 micron using a disposable filter element
housed in a standard filter housing.

HOW OFTEN DOES MY SYSTEM
NEED TO BE SERVICED?
Filter elements are changed every 90 days (maximum)
or earlier if blockage occurs.

RAINWATER
HARVESTING SYSTEM

RECLAIM SYSTEMS
APPLICATIONS

Rainwater harvesting involves the collection, storage and
distribution of rainwater from the roof or storm water, which,
depending on the type of filtration installed, can be utilised
either inside or outside of the building. In commercial
situations, rainwater is commonly used for cooling towers,
irrigation and ablution facilities. Residential applications are
predominantly for rainwater reuse in toilets, laundry and
drinking. Due to rainwater having a near neutral pH level,
treatment is generally simple and inexpensive.

OZONE IS A NATURALLY

CREATED FROM
OXYGEN ATOMS WHEN

AND HV CORONA
DISCHARGE
Ozone is recognised by its distinct smell and was named
after the Greek verb ozein (to smell) and is the peculiar
odour after lightning storms. Ozone’s odour is sharp,
reminiscent of chlorine.
Ozone is a triatomic oxygen meaning it has three atoms of
oxygen bound together. The third molecule can detach and
apply itself to other chemicals or substances. This ability to
attach to other substances means the ozone is able to alter
these substances.
Ozone is more effective and faster acting than chlorine plus
it’s environmentally friendly as it’s naturally occurring. It can
not be stored. It is generated and used immediately.
Advances in electronics and science in the past decade
have made it possible for Continental Water to develop and
manufacture a range of modern, high performance Ozone
Generators for a wide range of applications and industries.

EASTCOAST FOOD
AND BEVERAGE
COMPANY
COMPANY PROFILE

1

Peats Ridge is located an hour from Sydney on the Central
Coast hinterland. It is an area that has long been recognised
for production of citrus fruit and vegetables. In more recent
year’s spring water has become a thriving industry in the
area due to the abundance of spring water fed streams.

1. Bottling line
2. Water bubbling in the
storage tank.
3. Ozone Generator

One family that has been tapping into the areas abundance
of natural resources for three generations is the Lentini
family. Citrus farmers for 40 years; in 1998 the family
started the Eastcoast Food and Beverage Company and
today produce juices and spring water for national and
international markets. The Lentini family tap into the natural
resources around them, from their 22,000 citrus trees and
Spring Water from the Kulnura Plateau, to produce some of
the finest juices and waters on offer for end users.

“

INSTALLATION
Sam Lentini originally came to Continental Water
during the start-up stage of the Eastcoast Food and
Beverage business. The brief was simple – how do we
keep the spring water pristine and bacteria free just
prior to the bottling process.
“Given that the water is sourced from an underground
plateau we knew that the water would be free from above
ground containments such as bacteria, dissolved solids
and suspended solids. The challenge was to keep the
water’s purity once it was exposed above ground leading
up to the bottling process. We knew that as soon as it
went into a storage tank bacteria would be the problem”
said Peter Croft, Business Development Manager.
“Sam and I discussed this at length and I devised a
storage tank system which had to be custom built to work
in conjunction with the Ozone Generator.”
The system produces 100,000 litres per day to meet the
current production demands. Essentially water enters the
tank from the top and is drawn out of the base of the tank.
The ozone distribution system disperses the ozone equally
throughout the tank and the dissolved gas rises through
the incoming water. This counter current action provides

excellent contact of ozone through the water. An ozone
residual monitor continually checks and displays the
ozone level within the tank maintaining a constant
level at all times.
When Sam was asked how his experience with
Continental Water was, he told us “Continental Water was
very helpful in the start-up stage of Eastcoast Beverages.
We didn’t know much about the bottled water business
and Peter was very helpful in terms of his time and
advice. We designed the system together so we knew the
business was getting what it needed.”
15 years on, Sam has had to replace the original Ozone
Generator (after 8 years), the current model is still going
strong. The system is serviced by one of NSW Service
Technicians, Len Schuler, who specialises in the ozone
category. Regular services are scheduled and if the
system should fail same day service and loan equipment
can be organised to minimise production down time.

Given that the water is sourced from an underground
plateau we knew that the water would be free from above
ground containments such as bacteria, dissolved solids and

  • 5. INDUSTRIES WATER FILTRATION WATER FILTRATION IS AN AREA THAT IMPACTS EVERYONE. FROM COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS TO UNDER SINK SYSTEMS WITHIN THE HOME, THE QUEST FOR PURE WATER HAS BEEN A PRIORITY FOR CENTURIES. In ancient Greek and Sanskrit writings dating back to 2000 BC, water treatment methods were recommended. People were aware that heating water might purify it. They were also educated in sand and gravel filtration, boiling, and straining. The major motive for water purification was better tasting drinking water. After 500 BC, Hippocrates discovered the healing powers of water. He invented the practice of sieving water, and obtained the first bag filter, which was called the ‘Hippocratic sleeve’. The main purpose of the bag was to trap sediments that caused bad tastes or odours. In today’s world the importance of water and its purity is crucial. From the mining sector to the food and beverage industry – effective water filtration is paramount to your business. Our comprehensive range of water filtration applications and our team’s experience and knowledge allow us to deliver quality pure water solutions for your business from installation to service. 8 CONTENTS 9
  • 6. CASE STUDY SIBELCO Founded in 1872, Sibelco began operation in the Australian and New Zealand markets in 2000. One of the world’s largest industrial mineral companies Sibelco has a network of over 45 mines, plants, sales offices and warehouses based in Australia. They supply products to Glass, Mining, Agriculture, Construction and Industrial Manufacturing industries. IBC Water has had a long standing partnership with Sibelco’s Silica Sand manufacturing plant on North Stradbroke Island. The plant is a floating Concentrator Vessel which is 60m long by 40m wide designed specifically for sand mining. “ combined water system which serves various functions such as drinking and requirements to manufacturing processes. The system encompasses Kinetico NonElectric Filters which includes a pH neutraliser, a water softener and multimedia filters to manage the 15,000 litres a day usage requirements. Incoming water pressure drives the Kinetico system meaning the system is only in operation when water is needed; saving on power. The entire system is housed in a 12 sqm plant and is serviced on a regular basis from our Brisbane plant. The service involves salt top up as well as a general maintenance and a water quality check. The system has exceeded expectations. The team put forward an innovative solution which saves energy, is reliable and is saving Sibelco money as we no longer have to buy water. We also now have the added peace of mind knowing the system is maintained to exacting OH & S water requirements for the general health and wellbeing of the employees working on the Concentrator. ” 2 3 Bob Bell Sibelco, Plant Operations Superintendent The Concentrator processes 3,000 tons of sand a day to extract the zircon which goes towards manufacturing paints, toothpaste, sunscreen, ceramic tiles, touch phones and digital tablets. Water quality is maintained in the 3,000 litre holding tank through an electric UV system. Again this system is serviced and maintained by our Brisbane Service Technicians. Originally IBC Water installed an activated carbon and sand filter system to treat bore water as it was pumped from the pond to the Concentrator for general consumption and washing purposes. The system now means the staff shifts can confidently drink and bathe in the water overcoming the need to transport water to the pontoon and is in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, over time various factors such as pond water chloroforms, general wear and tear and age saw a deterioration in the end water product. This lead to Sibelco having to purchase and transport water onto the island at sizeable costs. Bob Bell highlighted that “The system has exceeded my expectations. The team put forward an innovative solution which saves energy, is reliable and is saving Sibelco money as we no longer have to buy water. In late 2012, Sibelco again approached IBC Water to discuss how to best upgrade their water system. Bob Bell, the plants Operations Superintendent, brief was to design and install a system to meet OH & S regulations and the needs of the Concentrator’s crews without environmental impacts to North Stradbroke Island. Now under the ownership of Continental Water, the team designed, built and now service a comprehensive 10 1 4 1. Sibelco Concentrator Vessel 2. Quartz Sand Mine 3. Water Treatment Plant 4. • 7. SYSTEMS ELECTRIC OR KINETICO NON-ELECTRIC WHY AN ELECTRIC SYSTEM? An electric system allows you to set the time and frequency of the back wash and gives you full control of your water filtration system. WHY USE A KINETICO NONELECTRIC SYSTEM? Continental Water is a close distribution partner with Kinetico – the world pioneer in non-electric filter systems. This is crucial in numerous industries and applications such as labs and hospital scenarios, laundries and food and beverage manufacturing. A Kinetico non-electric system has the same qualities and attributes of an electric system but runs on water pressure to drive all functions of the Kinetico valve. All of our electric valves feature; • Seven day timer for time based backwashes or • Microprocessor for volume based backwash A Kinetico non-electric system is ideal when a system is not running to a strict regime as it saves both water and power. It can be used in remote areas which don’t have access to power or an application that does not require backwashing at a set time throughout a 24 hour period. The Hydrus Valve is a non-electric 50mm valve, (the standard non-electric valve is 32mm) the first top mount control that regenerates in a counter current format right out of the box. It reduces salt use by more than 30% which delivers additional cost savings and efficiencies. It works in conjunction with a Kinetico non-electric water system. WHICH FILTER SYSTEM IS BEST FOR YOU? 12 Both an electric and a Kinetico non-electric system supports the following applications; • Single or multi tank configurations • Water softening • Filtration • Ion exchange • Deionisation systems • Co-current or counter current regenerations CONTENTS Hydrus Valve features; • Non-corrosive • No motors • Hydraulic operation • No limit-switches • Lead free • No cams The Hydrus Smart Start is the perfect complement to a Hydrus non-electric system. It is a controller that can operate your entire system to a range of specifications and configurations. 13
  • 8. TANK MEDIA WHICH IS BEST FOR YOUR APPLICATION? 6. NEXTSAND One media type does not fit all filtration requirements. We offer a diverse range of media options to suit a broad range of industries from resin Deionisation systems to Kinetico Macrolite media. Nextsand filtration is a high-purity form of filtration, filtering down to a credible 3 micron (nominal 5), and provides a higher solid loading, longer running times, superior performance and long bed life in comparison to multi media. The hardness, stability and micro porous character of Nextsand makes it a perfect filtration media for virtually every application in the water and wastewater treatment industry. We can create a customised solution to suit any budget, industry or operation size. 1 KINETICO MACROLITE . Macrolite is a ground breaking filtration media which provides the best filtration performance and high filtration rates. The granular, ceramic media offers filtration superior in comparison with more traditional aggregates such as sand and multi media. 1 2 7. DMI-65 DMI-65 is an effective media in the removal of iron and manganese from raw water, by acting as an oxidisation channel allowing immediate oxidisation and removal of the insoluble precipitate. It performs well within a wide The end result for you? A system that will improve water quality, lower operating costs and reduce waste discharge volumes. Features; • Filters to 5 micron • 100 x surface area to sand • Removes more turbidity • Holds solids longer than traditional medias • More particle removal at very low micron levels • Reduced media weight reduces backwash flow rates • 100 % bed expansion at a flow rate 2/3 or less than other filter types 2. CARBON Carbon filtration is a common method of removing unwanted tastes and odours caused by chlorine, organics, chemicals, herbicides, pesticides and algae. Removal of chlorine is necessary before a reverse osmosis system and water softener treatment as these processes are not tolerant to chlorine. Unlike other forms of media filtration, carbon will also partially remove tannin or organic colours. One litre of carbon has roughly the surface area of a football field, therefore quite extensive runs from the carbon bed can be realised before replacement is required. 3. CALCITE Calcite is a crushed and screened white marble material used to neutralise low pH water to a neutral non-corrosive state. Upon contact with calcite, acidic water slowly dissolves the calcium carbonate media to raise the pH level, which subsequently reduces the potential leaching of copper, lead and other metals typically found in plumbing systems. However, in some circumstances calcite will add hardness to the water supply and a water softener may be required. Calcite filtration is an efficient neutralising filter. 4. MULTI MEDIA Multi Media filtration is used primarily to remove sediment down to a nominal 25 microns by collecting particles and flushing the waste during the backwashing process. The filter has a five-strata bed; the system consists of 5 different filtration media from coarse gravel to fine sand. 14 pH range of 5.8 up to 8.6, and also achieves efficient filtration under high operating temperatures up to a maximum of 45˚C. 8. BAG FILTERS Bag filtration offers a solution to traditional forms of filtration whilst maintaining cost effectiveness and versatility for a range of applications. The housing is made from durable and hard-wearing polypropylene or stainless steel with UV resistant properties. The filtration process works by water entering the unit through the inlet manifold and passing into the top section of the bag housing, through the internal filter bag, leaving through the lower outlet manifold. The degree of filtration is determined by the micron rating of the bag installed. 3 4 TANK CONFIGURATIONS SIMPLEX (SINGLE) This system uses raw water to regenerate or backwash. This configuration is the most economical to purchase and the most space efficient; however, operational costs and waste production is not the lowest. Additionally it does not produce the best water quality. This system has a a flow rate ranging from 8 to 360 LPM. 5 6 TRIPLEX (TRIPLE) As with a Duplex system, this configuration uses soft or filtered water to regenerate. This system is ideal for continuous high flow rate applications where water quality and regeneration efficiency is vital, such as chlorine production, batch filling operations, boiler feed and other critical applications. The Triplex design effectively regenerates one tank at a time with only a minimal pressure drop. A Triplex system has a flow rate ranging from 200 LPM to 1,000 LPM. DUPLEX (DUAL) Uses soft or filtered water to regenerate. This configuration is suited for intermittent higher flow designs needed by laundries, hotels, motels and large food and beverage preparation facilities. Duplex flow rates range from 100 LPM to 700 LPM. 7 8 1. Kinetico Macrolite magnified 100x 2. Carbon 3. Calcite 4. Multi-media 5. Greensand 6. Nextsand. 7. DMI-65 8. Bag Filters 5. MANGANESE GREENSAND FILTERS MULTI TANK Again uses soft or filtered water to regenerate or backwash. This configuration delivers high flow rates with almost no backwash detectable pressure drops during regeneration or backwash. The design offers high salt efficiency and the softest water possible. A Multi Tank system has flow rates from 60 LPM to 1500 LPM. Manganese Greensand is a naturally occurring glauconite mineral of marine origin. The singular nodular grains of glauconite are washed, graded, stabilised and coated with manganese oxide. This media has the ability to attract, absorb or dissolve iron, manganese and moderate levels of hydrogen sulphide in raw water. This type of filtration requires regeneration to occur on a regular basis with potassium permanganate, which oxidises or precipitates the mineral bed of absorbed iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide. These are then removed during the backwashing or rinsing process. A level below 7pH will strip the media rendering it useless. pH correction by way of soda ash dosing is recommended. CONTENTS 15

  • 14. ELECTRIC SYSTEMS INDUSTRIES ELECTRIC SYSTEMS WATER SOFTENERS WATER IS REFERRED TO AS “HARD” IF IT CONTAINS A LOT OF CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM. GROUNDWATER ACQUIRES THESE MINERALS BY DISSOLVING THEM FROM SURROUNDING SOIL AND ROCK. You can easily see the effects of hard water including low sudsing when using soaps and detergents, which leaves a residue on skin, clothes and hair. This can lead to red itchy skin and irritation. But what does this mean for commercial applications? Hard water causes dissolved calcium and magnesium to precipitate out of hard water as scale, which builds up on the insides of pipes and industrial machinery. Scale reduces flow through pipes and is a poor conductor of heat. Eventually, pipes can become completely clogged and less functional. Without an effective water softener solution, valuable production time can be lost in repairs and reduce water flow rates, plus the life of your production system can be dramatically shortened. All water softeners use a process called Ion Exchange to remove the magnesium and calcium and produce water which does not leave scale or unwanted residue in your manufacturing system. Continental Water Systems offer a broad range of local and off shore systems to suit every application, budget and project size. We supply IBC single, duplex and triplex systems and Kinetico non-electric systems which can be serviced on a regular basis by our locally based service team. 26 CONTENTS 27

  • 16. ELECTRIC SYSTEMS WATER SOFTENERS KINETICO NON-ELECTRIC ELECTRIC SYSTEMS WATER SOFTENERS SINGLE, DUPLEX AND TRIPLEX SYSTEMS KINETICO MACH SERIES An IBC Water Softener uses Cation resin which will exchange its sodium with Calcium and Magnesium in the water. This reaction is reversed in the regeneration process, when at a pre-set time; brine (saturated salty water) is drawn up from an attached brine tank and is flushed through the resin to remove the Calcium and Magnesium to waste. EXCLUSIVE MACH SERIES NON-ELECTRIC CONTROL VALVE Kinetico delivers an exclusive non-electric control valve which eliminates the need to adjust, set, repair or replace timers, computers or electrical components. The Kinetico control valve simultaneously manages two media tanks through service and regeneration cycles. Water pressure, not electricity, runs the system. As water passes through the control valve, a water turbine meters the amount of water processed by the systems. The valve automatically initiates regeneration after the predetermined amount of water has been treated. FEATURES • FRP Vessel • UPVC or ABS pipe work assembly • Optional galvanised skid mounting • High quality control equipment and valves • Option of control head, water actuated, air actuated or electrical actuated valves • Potable grade media • Option of modular integration • Ex-factory or onsite loading of media for tight spaces • Brine drawing system with dose rate recommendations • Brine storage tank As the system is comprised of two media tanks, soft water can be used for the complete regeneration process which substantially improves the system’s efficiency and the product water quality. Kinetico’s Hydrus water softeners are different. The Hydrus water softener is the only multi-port system to use counter current, soft water regeneration right out of the box. This proven and trusted method of operation results in up to a 40 percent reduction in salt use when compared to other units. In addition waste water volumes are reduced by as much as 30 percent, making Hydrus a more environmentally responsible water treatment product than others. DUPLEX Water quality from a Hydrus water softener is significantly better than the water quality from a traditional co-current or hard water regenerating system. With a Hydrus system, hardness leakage will be reduced by as much as 95 percent. This configuration is the most economical to purchase and the most space efficient. However, operational costs and waste production are not the lowest. Additionally, it does not offer the best water quality. MULTI-TANK CONFIGURATIONS Duplex – Uses soft water to regenerate. This design is suited for intermittent higher flow designs. Triplex – Uses soft water to regenerate. This configuration is ideal for continuous high flow rate applications where water quality and regeneration efficiency are vital, such as chlorine production, batch filling operations, boiler feed and other critical applications. The Triplex design effectively regenerates one tank at a time with only a minimal pressure drop. Multi-Tank – Uses soft water to regenerate. This system ensures high flow rates with almost no detectable pressure drops during regeneration. The design offers high salt efficiency and the softest water possible. 34 CONTENTS 35
  • 19. MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRIES MEMBRANE SYSTEMS WATER IS A PRECIOUS RESOURCE. AS THE DEMAND FOR WATER GROWS, MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY IS AN AREA OF THE INDUSTRY WHICH IS BEING HEAVILY RESEARCHED AND CONSTANT INNOVATIONS ARE BEING MADE TO ENHANCE THE END QUALITY OF WATER TREATED. Membranes for water applications are being highlighted as a potentially cost-effective option to deliver a range of purification and separation needs. They can be used across human, industrial and environmental applications and make the need for traditional water treatment methods, such as physical separation techniques, chemical treatments and evaporation techniques, redundant. Membrane Technology uses selectively permeable barriers, with pores sized to allow for the travel of water molecules but small enough to block the passage of unwanted particles and compounds. In 1950, Membrane Technology treatment was introduced in the desalination treatment of brackish, ground water and seawater. Continued advances in materials, designs and process combinations have today seen a big increase in affordable, chemical free, environmentally friendly applications across a broad range of industries. 36 CONTENTS 37

Reverse Osmosis water storage & Ozone disinfection The treated water is directed to a storage tank with a 27,000 litre capacity which can be sent to production at a moment’s notice. Stored water is passed through an ultraviolet system and Ozone Oxidiser to eliminate any bacteria which may have formed while the water was in storage. The water is then released back into the main plant production process. 4. Reverse Osmosis Systems 5. Ozone disinfection & Macrolite Filtration System 6. Batches are mixed with water prior to bottling 2 3 Water is a vital part of the manufacturing process. Without pure water the products would contain harmful bacteria which would impact the quality in countless ways, including shortened shelf life in store, surface contamination from cleaning products and ultimately loss of credibility of both Trendpac and the customers they supply. Continental Water was invited to tender for the installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system with the capacity to treat 120,000 litres per day. The RO system is part of a combined system with the primary function of supplying a continuous feed of treated water aligned with Trendpac’s 24 hour production schedule. An in built self-testing unit regularly tests the water to maintain optimum purity to prevent unwanted contaminates entering the production process. 38 4 5 Continental really delivered, the team know their stuff. • 21. MEMBRANE ELEMENTS WHICH IS BEST FOR YOUR APPLICATION? Membrane elements cross the spectrum of membrane including reverse osmosis (RO), ultrafiltration (UF). Originally RO membranes were designed for water desalination, spiral wound membranes are now used in a variety of applications including agriculture, manufacturing high purity water and at high temperature and extreme pH conditions. There are a number of RO membranes for varying applications. 1 LOW ENERGY . These RO elements are selected when high rejection, high flow and ultra-low operating pressures are desired. YACHTING DESALINATION TREATMENTS MINING AGRICULTURE DRINKING WATER PURIFICATION PURE WATER – TYPE I AND II FOR LABORATORIES BORE WATER FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY WATER AND WASTE WATER 2. FOULING RESISTANT Thin-film reverse osmosis (RO) membrane elements are characterised by high flow, high sodium chloride rejection and low fouling surface properties. 3. BRACKISH WATER Membranes designed for many applications including bore water where higher Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels are expected. 4. SEA WATER Used almost exclusively in water containing above 15,000ppm and up to 35,000 ppm of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). 5. RO MEMBRANES Typically are available in a number of different sizes to meet most flow rate requirements. 6. ULTRAFILTRATION (UF) A separation process using membranes with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 0.001 micron. Typically, UF membranes will remove high molecular-weight substances, colloidal materials, and organic and inorganic polymeric molecules. Low molecular-weight organics and ions such as sodium, calcium, magnesium chloride, and sulfate are not removed by UF Membranes. 40 CONTENTS 41
  • 22. MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRIES ULTRAFILTRATION SYSTEM ULTRAFILTRATION Efficient ultrafiltration systems utilise membranes which can be submerged, are back-flushable, air scoured as well as spiral wound UF/MF membranes. They offer superior performance for the clarification of wastewater and process water. ULTRAFILTRATION IS A SEPARATION PROCESS USING MEMBRANES WITH PORE SIZES IN THE RANGE OF 0. TO 0.001 MICRONS. TYPICALLY 1 , ULTRAFILTRATION WILL REMOVE HIGH MOLECULAR-WEIGHT SUBSTANCES, COLLOIDAL MATERIALS AND ORGANIC AND INORGANIC POLYMERIC MOLECULES. Ultrafiltration, like Reverse Osmosis, is a cross – flow separation process. Here liquid stream to be treated (feed) flows tangentially along the membrane surface, thereby producing two streams. The stream of liquid that comes through the membrane is called permeate. • High quality hollow fibre membranes • Feed & backflush pumps • Control valves • Process pressure gauges and flow meters • Stainless steel frame • APVC and ABS pipe work and valves • PLC controlled with option of HMI, GSM dialler or SCADA remote monitoring • Containerised or modular integration TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS depositories of suspended solids and have to be cleaned or replaced frequently. Conventional filters are used upstream from the membrane system to remove relatively large suspended solids and to let the membrane do the job of removing fine particles. Conventional filters such as media filters or cartridge filters, only remove suspended solids by trapping these in the pores of the filter – media. These filters therefore act as FEATURES In ultrafiltration, for many applications, no pre filters are used and ultrafiltration modules concentrate all of the suspended and emulsified materials. • 24. MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRIES RO/EDI SYSTEM This system delivers superior Reverse Osmosis water purification solutions for the most high end laboratories and health care requirements. KINETICO TL SERIES The Continental Water RO/EDI system uses resin in a single bed configuration to deionise water. The deionisation process significantly reduces the number of bacteria in the water, as the electrodes that contact the resin create an electric potential that the bacteria cannot live in. While the pH shift in the cells helps with the removal of the SiO2 and CO2 and reduces bacterial growth. COMMERCIAL MEMBRANE SYSTEMS • Resin is continually regenerated without chemicals • Energy consumption is low saving you on energy bills • Water quality is constantly maintained • System designed to have various additional components based on water purity needs and business growth • Compact size for easy installation • CO2 traps for the tank • UV Oxidisation and disinfection • Sterile environment • Finest quality materials used in the manufacturing WHAT IS THE EVERCLEAN RINSE SYSTEM? The TL Series from Kinetico is ideal for high quality water solutions when space is at a premium and water conservation is needed. The TL Series features Kinetico’s patented EverClean rinse. FEATURES If your system has a raw water flush or no flush, dissolved solids travel through the membrane when the system is idle and appear in the product water upon start-up. Accelerated membrane fouling also occurs, decreasing membrane life and increasing maintenance costs. Kinetico’s patented EverClean rinse eliminates the potential for low quality start-up water and extends membrane life. The EverClean rinse is standard on all TL Series systems. 54" 22" 46 CONTENTS 20" 47

One by-product of desalination is salt. Desalination is used on many seagoing ships and submarines. Most of the modern interest in desalination is focused on developing cost-effective ways of providing fresh water for human use. Along with recycled wastewater, this is one of the few rainfall-independent water sources. Large-scale desalination typically uses large amounts of energy and specialised, expensive infrastructure, making it more expensive than fresh water from conventional sources, such as rivers or groundwater. Desalination is particularly relevant to countries, such as Australia, which traditionally have relied on collecting rainfall behind dams to provide their drinking water supplies. *Based in 24 hour operation, 25°C, 500 TDS feed, permeate to atmospheric tank, 50 psi (3.54 bar) inlet pressure SYSTEM INCLUSIONS • Range of sizes from 7,500 to 30,000 litres per day of high quality permeate water • Low energy, high rejection membranes for colder water and or lower pressure water line and drain • Simple expansion any TL Series can grow to a 30,000 litres per day as your business grows • EverClean rinse cleans the membrane to protect water quality and extend the life of the membrane • Prefilter improves water feed quality by removing solids • Digital micro-processor for automated control and precise operation • Panel mounted gauges for accurate pressure readings 48 ACCESSORIES AND SYSTEM EXTENSIONS • Pre treatments • Carbon Filtration for chlorine removal to extend membrane life and improve water quality • Filtration improves feed water quality by removing solids • Softening increases Reverse Osmosis system performance by eliminating hardness fouling to extend membrane life and water quality • Storage and repressurisation systems • Systems which provide a constant supply and pressure of high quality permeate water • Standard Bladder Tank – sizes up to 300 litres • Atmospheric Tank – sizes to suit most applications CONTENTS The traditional process used in these operations is vacuum distillation – the boiling of water at less than atmospheric pressure and thus a much lower temperature than normal. Because of the reduced temperature, energy is saved in the desalination process. The principal competing processes use membranes to desalinate, principally applying Reverse Osmosis technology. Membrane processes use semipermeable membranes and pressure to separate salts from water. Reverse Osmosis plant membrane systems typically use less energy than thermal distillation, which has led to a reductionin overall desalination costs over the past decade. 49

  • 28. ELECTRIC SYSTEMS INDUSTRIES ELECTRIC SYSTEMS DEIONISATION DEIONISATION IS THE MOST EFFICIENT PROCESS KNOWN FOR REMOVING DISSOLVED SALTS AND MINERALS FROM WATER, THE PROCESS REMOVES THESE IMPURITIES BY ION EXCHANGE. Synthetic ion exchange resin with either hydrogen or hydroxide ions, release their ions in exchange for the positively charged cations or negatively charged anions which may be present in the water supply. An efficient mixed bed deioniser, combining both cation and anion resins, can produce water that approaches the theoretical limits of purity (18.24 megohm-cm resistivity at 25°C). Mixed bed deionisation utilises only one ion exchange tank with cation and anion exchange resin mixed to produce an infinite number of separate ion exchange sites within the single tank. Water quality from a mixed bed system is much higher than separate bed, with 18 megohm-cm possible. In many applications, the mixed bed deionisers are preceded by separate bed deionisation units in order to get large volumes of water from units. In separate bed deionisation, dissolved cations are removed by direction fed water through a bed of cation exchange resins. The water flows through a bed of anion exchange resin to remove the negatively charged fraction of the dissolved solids in the water. Separate bed deionisation can remove more than 99% of the dissolve ions in a water supply, depending on the constituents of the water, regenerant chemical type, and litres used. Product water quality from separate bed deionisation systems is typically within the 1 megohm-cm range, approximately 1 part per million as CaCO3. Continental Water can provide any number of systems to meet your business needs. Our tanks are available in sizes from 7 litres with a flow rate of 3LPM to 100 litres with a flow rate of 100LPM. The larger systems can be also be arranged in parallel to increase flow rates from 200LPM or more. All of our systems are serviced every 90 days and full installation and training is included as part of our Service Deionisation program. 54 CONTENTS 55
  • 29. ELECTRIC SYSTEMS CASE STUDY SYDNEY WATER SERVICE DEIONISATION (SDI) IS A KEY PILLAR TO CONTINENTAL WATER’S BUSINESS – IN FACT WE INTRODUCED THE SYSTEM INTO AUSTRALIA 24 YEARS AGO. Sydney Water approached Continental Water 10 years ago with the brief of designing and installing a SDI system to service their water testing laboratories based in North Ryde. On a tour of the Sydney Water Laboratories, it became very apparent that without a reliable system there could be a very significant impact to water testing and water quality across Sydney if problems were not identified due to a laboratory water system failure. The Sydney Water SDI system starts in the top level of the building. Located with air conditioning ducts and computer wiring is their five tank system. Various media “ 1 1. Water arrives for testing 2. DI – 5 tank filter system 3. Water Polisher in laboratory 4. Alarm in the laboratory 5. Sydney Water – equipment washing fall below standard, an alarm activates in the laboratories down stairs to alert staff who can then make a call to organise a Service Technician to make a same day call. Charlie Pierce, Laboratory Manager, Analytical Services told us on our tour “the beauty of the system is that back up water is stored in a 2,500 litre tank with a polishing system to maintain Type II water in specific labs. The drinking water schedule is not impacted prior to a service call as we have this back up water until the Service Technician arrives. And trust me, we know when there is a problem with the system as the alarm is loud!” 2 3 4 5 The beauty of the system is that water is stored in a 2,500 litre tank with a polishing system to maintain Type I water in specific labs. The drinking water schedule is not impacted prior to a service call as we have this back up water ready until the Service Technician arrives. And trust me, we know when there is a problem with the system as the alarm is loud! are housed in each tank with a specific task. Initially, a five micron filter removes suspended solids; once the water passes through this it then goes to an activated carbon tank which removes chlorine before it goes to a single bed and then into mixed bed media tank containing DI resin which removes the final impurities in the water to generate Type II water. The tanks generate 40,000 litres of water prior to replacement tanks being installed by one of our NSW Service Technicians. However, water quality is tested by an in built monitor after tank five. If water quality should ” Charlie Pierce Laboratory Manager, Analytical Services, Sydney Water The high purity labs are equipped with Siemens Water Polishers so that any requirement of their rigorous and demanding drinking water schedule is met with the combined system from washing equipment to micro testing. The greatest benefit that Charlie was keen to reinforce is that the Service Technicians and Administration Support “are always there within hours of a service call being made” and always have a solution to resolve any production issues so that Sydney Water’s schedule is not impacted. • 30. FAQ ELECTRIC SYSTEMS DEIONISATION APPLICATIONS LABORATORIES AND RESEARCH HOW IS THE MEDIA REGENERATED? All exhausted deionisation resin media is regenerated with a six-stage process including; separation, backwash, chemical regeneration, rinse, mix, and fast rinse. Media backwash removes fines and debris to media bed to maximise capacity. Regeneration chemical quality (hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide) is technical grade or better to assure quality regeneration, and minimise any contamination from the regeneration chemicals. Rinse water is processed through regenerated tanks until residual chemical is flushed from the system as confirmed by conductivity measurement. All tanks are thoroughly rinsed to quality specification before leaving the regeneration facility and prior to activation on-site. HOW DURABLE AND TRANSPORTABLE ARE THE TANKS? COSMETIC AND PHARMACEUTICAL The tanks are designed for a maximum working pressure of 860 kPa, hydrostatically tested at 2000 kPa and de-rated for service to 340 kPa. Tanks are made of fibreglass-reinforced polyester with a 2½" threaded top opening. Upper and lower distribution system are of a slot or mesh strainer design to provide even distribution of water throughout the exchange column. WHAT CONDITIONING MEDIA DO YOU USE? HOSPITALS AND INSTITUTIONS Each tank contains around 6.5 litres of high-capacity, 40:60, strong acid cation to strong base anion mixed bed resin. The media is solid, of uniform particle size and contains no plates, shells, and agglomerates or similar that might interfere with the normal function of the water purification system. LAUNDRIES THE SYSTEM? The system is quick and simple. Inlet and outlet ports accept a ½" quick connect inert, double “O” ring sealed adapter. Compression fittings and ferrules suitable for use with ½" or ¾" high-pressure flexible LLDPE tubing are used to interconnect pre filtration, deionisation and post filtration stages and provide for easy replacement and movement of the tanks. IS THE WATER PRE TREATED AND IF SO HOW? The feedwater supply shall be pressure regulated to a maximum 350 kPa and made available for connection through a ¾" or ½" female thread ball valve. Prior to entering the deionisation resin stages, the feedwater is pre-treated by passage through a disposable nominal 5 micron filter element (blown polypropylene type) for sediment removal. Filtered feedwater is then dechlorinated by passage through a disposable activated carbon filter element or tank. Both filter elements are contained in filter housings rated for a maximum working pressure of 860 kPa and de-rated for routine operation to 350 kPa. Filter housings are interconnected with a ¾" double thread 3.5 litre per minute flow restrictor. HOW IS POST FILTRATION DONE? Product water exiting the Deionisation system is filtered to a nominal 1 micron using a disposable filter element housed in a standard filter housing. HOW OFTEN DOES MY SYSTEM NEED TO BE SERVICED? Filter elements are changed every 90 days (maximum) or earlier if blockage occurs. HOW EASY IS IT TO CONNECT FOOD PROCESSING PLANTS CAR WASHING 58 ELECTRICAL MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING CONTENTS 59

  • 33. RAINWATER HARVESTING RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM RECLAIM SYSTEMS APPLICATIONS Rainwater harvesting involves the collection, storage and distribution of rainwater from the roof or storm water, which, depending on the type of filtration installed, can be utilised either inside or outside of the building. In commercial situations, rainwater is commonly used for cooling towers, irrigation and ablution facilities. Residential applications are predominantly for rainwater reuse in toilets, laundry and drinking. Due to rainwater having a near neutral pH level, treatment is generally simple and inexpensive. • 35. WATER OZONE SYSTEMS INDUSTRIES WATER OZONE SYSTEMS OZONE OZONE GENERATORS REPRESENT POWERFUL, CHEMICAL FREE DISINFECTING SYSTEMS. OZONE IS A NATURALLY OCCURRING GAS CREATED FROM OXYGEN ATOMS WHEN EXPOSED TO UV LIGHT AND HV CORONA DISCHARGE Ozone is recognised by its distinct smell and was named after the Greek verb ozein (to smell) and is the peculiar odour after lightning storms. Ozone’s odour is sharp, reminiscent of chlorine. Ozone is a triatomic oxygen meaning it has three atoms of oxygen bound together. The third molecule can detach and apply itself to other chemicals or substances. This ability to attach to other substances means the ozone is able to alter these substances. Ozone is more effective and faster acting than chlorine plus it’s environmentally friendly as it’s naturally occurring. It can not be stored. It is generated and used immediately. Advances in electronics and science in the past decade have made it possible for Continental Water to develop and manufacture a range of modern, high performance Ozone Generators for a wide range of applications and industries. 68 CONTENTS 69
  • 36. CASE STUDY EASTCOAST FOOD AND BEVERAGE COMPANY COMPANY PROFILE 1 Peats Ridge is located an hour from Sydney on the Central Coast hinterland. It is an area that has long been recognised for production of citrus fruit and vegetables. In more recent year’s spring water has become a thriving industry in the area due to the abundance of spring water fed streams. 1. Bottling line 2. Water bubbling in the storage tank. 3. Ozone Generator One family that has been tapping into the areas abundance of natural resources for three generations is the Lentini family. Citrus farmers for 40 years; in 1998 the family started the Eastcoast Food and Beverage Company and today produce juices and spring water for national and international markets. The Lentini family tap into the natural resources around them, from their 22,000 citrus trees and Spring Water from the Kulnura Plateau, to produce some of the finest juices and waters on offer for end users. “ INSTALLATION Sam Lentini originally came to Continental Water during the start-up stage of the Eastcoast Food and Beverage business. The brief was simple – how do we keep the spring water pristine and bacteria free just prior to the bottling process. “Given that the water is sourced from an underground plateau we knew that the water would be free from above ground containments such as bacteria, dissolved solids and suspended solids. The challenge was to keep the water’s purity once it was exposed above ground leading up to the bottling process. We knew that as soon as it went into a storage tank bacteria would be the problem” said Peter Croft, Business Development Manager. “Sam and I discussed this at length and I devised a storage tank system which had to be custom built to work in conjunction with the Ozone Generator.” The system produces 100,000 litres per day to meet the current production demands. Essentially water enters the tank from the top and is drawn out of the base of the tank. The ozone distribution system disperses the ozone equally throughout the tank and the dissolved gas rises through the incoming water. This counter current action provides excellent contact of ozone through the water. An ozone residual monitor continually checks and displays the ozone level within the tank maintaining a constant level at all times. When Sam was asked how his experience with Continental Water was, he told us “Continental Water was very helpful in the start-up stage of Eastcoast Beverages. We didn’t know much about the bottled water business and Peter was very helpful in terms of his time and advice. We designed the system together so we knew the business was getting what it needed.” 15 years on, Sam has had to replace the original Ozone Generator (after 8 years), the current model is still going strong. The system is serviced by one of NSW Service Technicians, Len Schuler, who specialises in the ozone category. Regular services are scheduled and if the system should fail same day service and loan equipment can be organised to minimise production down time. Given that the water is sourced from an underground plateau we knew that the water would be free from above ground containments such as bacteria, dissolved solids and suspended solids. The challenge was to keep the water’s purity once it was exposed above ground leading up to the bottling process. We knew that as soon as it went into a storage tank bacteria would be the problem ” Peter Croft, CWS Business Development Manager. 2 3 It’s safe to say that today, Eastcoast Beverages are one of the most successful beverage producers in the area and it is reassuring for Continental Water to know that our ozone system continues to meet their growing business needs.
