Jukka Konnunaho & Esko Korkiakoski / Business opportunities in the Myanmar mining sector development - GTK perspective
1. BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MYANMAR MINING
SECTOR DEVELOPMENT
– GTK PERSPECTIVE
Gold mining in Myanmar
2. AGENDA
1. GENERAL INFO FROM MYANMAR
2. MYANMAR MINERAL POTENTIAL
3. OVERVIEW FOR GTK’ CURRENT
PROJECT IN MYANMAR
4. BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN MINING
AND EXPLORATION SECTOR

3. Myanmar
• Developing country
• Developing democracy (new president,
government and political agenda)
• Agricultural country
• Around 51 million people (2014)
• Total land area 677,000 km2
• Surrounded by growing economies
such as India and China
• Around 2100 km coast line
• Travelling to Myanmar via Thailand
• Liaison Office of Finland in Yangon
4. Myanmar Mineral Potential
• Significant deposits of Au-(±Cu),
Zn-Pd-Ag and Sn-W
• Large limestone, marble and possibly
natural stone resources
• Well known source of jade, ruby and
sapphire and other gemstones
• Several metallogenic belts run
through the country
• Huge exploration potential, but largely
untested (e.g. no airborne geophysics)
• New Mining Law 2016 (a step in the
right direction for Myanmar’s mining
industry)
7. Business Opportunities in Exploration and Mining Sector
• Poor knowledge of modern mining and exploration (educational aspect)
• Poor technology including mining equipment and processing technology (strong Chinese
influence)
• Problems with mine planning (education and consultation)
• Interest in environmental issues and related business opportunities rising (cleantech).
• Doors still open for business opportunities

8. GTK’s current project in Myanmar
GTK and Myanmar geologists in Bagan, Myanmar
• Sustainable development of mineral resources in Myanmar (2014-2016)
• First bilateral capacity building project at the Ministry of Mines (MoM)
• Financed by MFA, Budget 600 000 €
• Project consists of three main tasks:
1) GIS and information management (main task) 9 GIS trainees
2) GIS aided geological mapping process
3) Promotion of mineral potential of Myanmar
• Outcome; national geodatabase, 9 trained GIS geologists with developing
English skills, general institutional development, western style of working
9. Outcome of the current project
• Project has created confidential and trustworthy relationships between
GTK and the local partner (MoM)
• Co-operation has opened many ”closed” doors to access the mine
sites around the country
Observations: Strong need of mining and processing technology (win-win)
• Without strong efforts several projects have started during project:
Mine developing project with GeoAsia company
Mine developing project with Delco company
• GeoAsia company visited in Finland 2015 which gave strong influence
for their plans to develop their mine and country
• GTK’s project has showed that Myanmar has huge mineral potential
and Finnish export industry could use that possibility in many sectors if acting fast

10. GTK’s new project proposal looking for finance
• Using the developed good connections/knowledge with the local
administration and mines, GTK have formulated a new project
idea to support the Finnish mining sector technology exports
Background: strong need to develop and modernize the mining
industry and its working methods (win-win situation)
• Mining cannot be stopped, but now it is time to make it more
sustainable and environmentally friendly by developing the methods
Content: Visit operational mines with expert team including
mine geologist/engineer, ore geologist, processing engineer and
environmental expert (MoM permits + experts/trainees)
• Budget 800 000 €, BEAM-funding in collaboration with Finnish compannies
