Companies have been making changes in their workplaces with the intent to boost productivity and employee retention.
The entrance of younger generations in the workforce has impacted the way that companies organise their workplace.
According to a 2018 report from Pew Research Centre, the millennial generation is predicted to take up the largest portion
of the workforce by 2020. Because of this, companies are making necessary changes in order to accommodate this
younger generation.
3. The Millennial generation has a way of working which is very different from the generation before them which is why
today’s workplaces are changing. Companies are making conscious efforts in making these spaces become a place where
people interact and share ideas. By 2020, almost half (42.5%) of the global workforce will work mobile. While in the
present time, 61 % of workers today are already operating from outside the office.
According to Design Magazine, more transformations in the workplace will come by 2020. One of these trends is the ever-
shrinking office. The innovation of technology has made workplaces smaller. Now that young workers are conducting
businesses through mobile phones and tablets, the need for big desks has significantly decreased, making floor plans
shrink in space.
4. At a NeoCon event, a commercial interior event in Chicago, held on June 2019, upcoming commercial design trends were
presented. A trend that will take over the workplace is statement lighting. In large scale commercial spaces, bold lighting
fixtures can increase interest and productivity in the office. The priority of comfort is also set to become a big trend in
office design. Designers are bringing the comforts of home to workspaces with movable walls, lightweight furniture and
customisable storage solutions to allow personalisation in the workplace. Lastly, the push towards sustainability continues
in the workplace. It has been predicted that more and more companies will go green in many ways. This includes
incorporating patterns and textures in the workplace that are inspired by nature.
