R&D Process Design, Bioconjugation
Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL
• Conceived, designed, planned and prepared protein conjugates for
immunodiagnostic assays, protein/antibody selection and biomolecular binding
studies (ARCHITECT NGAL, B12, Pre-eclampsia, and Testosterone).
• Developed processes for preparation of bioconjugates and transferred to Abbott
manufacturing and TPM (Fisher, Fujirebio).
• Developed a small scale bioconjugation approach to minimized consumption of
expensive raw material, leading to a significant reduction in project cost.
• Trained TPM personnel (Fujirebio) on bioconjugation techniques and laboratory
equipment use.
• Presented bioconjugation results at cross- functional team meetings, management
reviews and Abbott Science Exchange poster sessions.
2. Maria Felicia Bogdan, Ph.D.
• Provided bioconjugation technical expertise to R&D teams.
• Developed rapports with Abbott vendors to ensure high quality and proper
characterization of incoming raw materials, availability of sufficient supply and
timely delivery for production (R&D Systems, SoluLink, ThermoFisher).
2002- 2005 Senior Scientist
R&D Organic Chemistry
Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL
• Designed and synthesized organic reagents for the development of
immunodiagnostic assays (ARCHITECT Sirolimus, Vitamin B12, Peptoid labels for
Signal Amplification).
• Developed a process for the Sirolimus tracer as a reagent for therapeutic blood
drug monitoring following an organ transplant; supported process transfer to the
TPM (AMRI).
• Developed methods for chromatographic analyses of organic reagents/polymers
(e.g., Glycated hemoglobin) and for the optimization of an enzymatic reaction
critical to the successful development of a cardiac immunoassay (Homocysteine).
• Maintained group mass spectrometer.
1999- 2002 Postdoctoral Fellow - NIH-NHGRI
Northwestern University, Evanston, IL
Advisor: Annelise E. Barron, Ph.D.
Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
• Conducted research aimed at developing a rapid, low cost, high-throughput DNA
sequencing technique based upon end-label free solution capillary
electrophoresis (ELFSE) that should allow analysis of long DNA in the absence of a
polymer matrix.
• Devised and synthesized a novel class of “end-label” (EL) structures
encompassing unnatural peptides and peptidomimetics chemically assembled
into linear and branched architectures and attached to DNA primers.
• Performed characterization of group synthesized polymers and copolymers to
serve as sieving matrices for high-throughput DNA sequencing and DNA mutation
detection.
• Trained and supervised undergraduate and graduate students in performing
organic synthesis.
1991- 1992 Chemistry/Physics Teacher
Textile High School, Romania
• Taught High School Chemistry and Physics (German language).
ADDITIONAL PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
2013- 2014 Chair, Abbott Women in Science employee network (AWS)
Abbott Laboratories
• Developed the vision, strategy, and tactics to address Abbott business and
scientist needs.
• Secured executive sponsorship and build partnerships with Abbott Organizations
(Global Citizenship, Abbott Fund, Scientific Governing Board, and HR).
• Build AWS organization committees.
• Led the expansion of the network outside the US (EU).
• Developed programs, some of which are being implemented across Abbott
globally (e.g., Scientist Mentoring Circles, new “Operation Discovery” STEM
outreach experiments).
• Increased AWS’s membership from 260 (US only) to 430 members (US and EU).
