2. *RICHARD LINKLATER*
Richard Linklater is an American film director ,
screenwriter , producer and cinematographer. He is
known for the coming of age comedy Dazed and
Confused (1993), the romantic drama film trilogy
Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before
Midnight (2013); the music-themed comedy School of
Rock (2003), the rotoscope animated Waking Life
(2001) and A Scanner Darkly (2006). From 2002 to
2014, he filmed Boyhood (2014), a passion project over
twelve years. Receiving universal acclaim , Linklater
won the Golden Globe, Critics' Choice Movie Awards
and BAFTAs for Best Director and Best Picture. He also
received his first nomination for the Academy Award
for Best Director, along with nominations for Original
Screenplay and Picture.
Many of his films are noted for their loosely structured
narrative; two of his projects – the Before... films and
Boyhood – feature the same actors filmed over an
extended period of years. He is also known for loyalty
to his actors, having worked with Ethan Hawke and
Matthew McConaughey in many of his films.
3. Key genres of Richard
Linklater
-Key Genres: Comedy Drama, Ensemble Film, Coming-of-Age, Comedy,
Animation, Period Film, Romance.
“In Linklater’s films, words are action. They express personality, identity,
conflict, attraction, rejection, sympathy, alienation, affection, evasion,
disclosure, and concealment. Mostly, they represent attempts to make
sense of the world, to understand people and places and events, and an
individual’s relationship to all of those things. Many of the riffs are
funny, some are disturbing and some are just nuts— Linklater shows an
uncondescending interest in the things that genuinely crazy people say,
the possible insights they enfold and the range of discomforts they
provoke.”
4. *Spend a week in rehearsal, save a day in
production : By Richard linklater
Linklater spends 3 weeks rehearsing scenes with his
actors on every project he does. He does this for several
reasons: discovering new things about the project
through this creative collaboration and preparing not only
the actors, but himself for production. But one benefit to
rehearsal he mentions is that every week you spend in
rehearsal saves a day in production, and since, as he says,
rehearsing is free, that could mean saving a lot of money
in the end.
5. *Write your screenplay like you would run the
10,000m -- one lap at a time : By Richard
linklater
Not all writers do things the same way. Some can sit down and bang out a script on the first try -- I
don't happen to know any, but I do know they exist. Most writers, however, need quite a bit of prep
before they ever write a single word of dialog. Though he says that your approach to screenwriting
should be "loose," Linklater suggests approaching each story element, the characters, the structure,
etc., like you would if it were a long distance run around a track -- in laps. So, for example,
determining who your characters are, their backgrounds, their goals, and everything else would be
one lap. This helps organize each piece in your mind, which helps with keeping your sanity, but it
also helps to keep you focused on the goal without feeling overwhelmed at how far you have left to
go. One lap at a time.
6. *The director in you must fire the writer in you:
By Richard linklater
Ask any screenwriter and they'll tell you that they never actually
finish a screenplay, they just kind of -- give up. They relent. I'm
sure most of us could spend the rest of our lives rewriting and
refining our stories, but if you're planning on directing the
script you're writing, Linklater says that the writer in you who
fell in love with the words and ideas on the page has to
eventually concede to the director in you who needs to find out
what works on-screen.
7. TRADE MARKS OF RICHARD
LINKLATER FILMS :
1. His films often take place within a single day.
2. His movies often take place in Texas.
3. His movies often reference Little League baseball.
4. Frequently casts Ethan Hawke.
5. Frequently writes and/or directs movies starring
children or teens, e.g., Dazed and Confused (1993),
School of Rock (2003), Bad News Bears (2005), _Boyhood
(2014)_, and Everybody Wants Some (2016).
8. Richard linklater signature
shot: The walk-and-talk dolly
shot.
Stylistic continuity is the true mark of an auteur. In Linklater’s case, the
common visual thread running through his films is the walk-and-talk
long take, a dolly shot that follows the characters as they wax poetic on
everything from the meaning of life to faking the moon landing.
Linklater wields his Steadicam and travels alongside his actors, letting
the action flow uninterrupted. What’s most remarkable about the long
take – in Boyhood and Before Midnight, especially – is the fact that
everything we see, including the dialogue, is choreographed down to a
tee, and not, as it would seem, improvised. That’s a modern master.
9. *Richard linklater different styles of film
making*
Linklater is known as a filmmaker who likes to work in different styles.
He has made Hollywood studio comedies (School of Rock), indie
chronicles of Generation X life (Slacker, Dazed & Confused ) and
experimental animated videos (Waking Life). But his fourth strand, the
Before… series, is shaping up as his most enduring legacy.
10. Richard linklater’s own effort to bring out the
real acting from his actors.
• ‘Casting Julie and Ethan wasn’t luck’ Linklater says. 'I was looking for actors
who would be creative and honest and all the things you’d require for what
I had in mind for Jesse and Celine. They were 23 at the time, just getting to
know each other. But in rehearsals they contributed such a lot to that first
movie, to the extent that we agreed if there was a scene or a line that one
of them didn’t like, we’d change it. By the time the second movie came
around, they had become those characters.’
• So it was that Linklater shared writing credits with the two actors on Before
Sunset.
• It was Richard’s effort to bring out the brilliant talent from the two actors in
his three movies (before sunrise, before sunset and before midnight)
