Leisure<br />What is the meaning of Leisure?<br />A period which you spend doing things other than your work.<br />A period of recuperation, or time to be filled after work was done.<br />Importance of Leisure:<br />Bring about a positive flow of energy in a person <br />Help to refresh the mind<br />

What’s part of leisure<br />Recreation activities<br />Active - Sports, strength exercises<br />Passive – Games, walks<br />Cognitive activities<br />Reading, spiritual education, puzzles<br />Social activities<br />Dancing, singing, playing cards, <br />Daily life activities<br />Eating, sleeping, cooking, cleaning, <br />Others<br />Watching TV, playing an instrument, gardening, tourism, etc.<br />

Two types of recreation<br />Active recreation <br />Is about engaging in adventure sports or outdoor games<br />Have physical resistance <br />Hiking<br />Biking<br />Skiing<br />Passive recreation <br />Involves activities such as taking a walk on the riverside, walking on the beach, strolling in parks or taking nature walks<br />Very little or no physical resistance activities<br />
  6. 6. Importance of Recreation<br />Devoting some time for recreation on a daily basis helps in the long run in maintaining health and achieving a peace of mind. Participate in some regular physical activity, play a sport or exercise. These recreational activities serve as a means of relaxation. Research has shown that recreation on a daily basis reduces risks of diabetes and hypertension, enhances physical and mental health and improves the quality of life. (Oak, 2010)<br />

Physical Activity<br />Some of the benefits of regular physical activity include:<br />Improved fitness and quality of life; <br />Better physical and mental health; <br />More energy and reduced stress; <br />Stronger muscles and bones;<br />Better posture and balance; and <br />Prolonged independent living in later life.<br />(CSEP, Health Canada, 1999)<br />
