2. • ORIGIN:From chondroblasts
• SITES AND SHAPES:
-Situated inside lacunae in the matrix.
-young chondrocytes:found beneath perichondrium.It is flat elliptical in
shape(long axis parallel to perichondrium)
-mature chondrocytes:deeply situated,spherical in shape.
-cell nest(lacunae):mitotic division of chondrocytes take place here.Because
of rigid nature of the matrix,the daughter cells tend
remain together in the same lacuna;thus forming the cell
nests.
• FUNCTIONS:
-Maintaining the cartilage matrix.
-Undergo mitosis “interstitial growth”,thus the cartilage expands from
within.
