Surah Al-A'3laa
Chapter 87: A Summary
Surah Al-A'3laa, which means The Most High, is Chapter 87 in the Noble Qur'an and contains 19 verses. Prophet
Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him (,)ﷺ used to recite this chapter in the first raka'ah of Eid and Friday
prayers, followed by Surah Al-Ghashiyah in the second raka'ah. This surah is prefered for recitation by Prophet
Muhammad ﷺ when his people (ummah) get together. Thus, it is important to learn and understand the message that
Allah (The Most Glorified, The Most High ( ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس)) wants to convey to us through this surah.
In a hadith compilation in the Book of Prayer, narrated by Ubai bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him (ُهۡنَع ٱ َي ِض َ,))ر
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite Surah Al-A'3laa in the first raka'ah of Witr prayers, followed by Al-Kaafirun in the
second raka'ah and Al-Ikhlas in the third rakaah.
Many scholars agree this is a Makki surah which came down before Hijrah i.e. Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ immigration
from Makkah to Madinah. In one narration, Al Bara' bin Azib ُهۡنَع ٱ َي ِض َر mentioned that he had never seen the people
of Madinah so happy like they were when they were receiving Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during his immigration to
Madinah. All the children came out to greet him in excitement saying “This is Rasulullah (Allah's Messenger)! This is
5. Rasulullah!” He also added that none of these things happened until after he had memorized Surah Al-A'3laa.
Once Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised Muadh ُهۡنَع ٱ َي ِض َر to read Surah Adh-Dhuha, Surah Al-A'3laa, Surah Al-Alaq and
Surah Al-Lail when leading Isha' prayers so it will not be difficult for the congregation, as opposed to reading a long
Surah like Surah Al-Baqarah. Then one is advised when in position of an Imam to let the congregation know beforehand
if he intends to read a long surah so everyone can plan ahead. This is an important consideration especially for people
with time-sensitive commitments.
Surah Breakdown
Sabbih means to purify, glorify, and remove any ill or false assumptions of Allah The word sabbih comes
from subHanahu (ُهَناَحۡبُس) and Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس usually mentions this after talking about shirk, which means to create
other deities. This word also removes all forms of weaknesses associated to Him that others may have falsely accused
Allah's Knowledge is complete and without competition or question, and no negativity can
be associated to Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس except that is has been falsely created by others e.g. Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس does not get
tired, does not need sleep, does not need to eat, etc. Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس is not comparable to any of His Creations.
6. Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس is The Most High from three perspectives:
1. Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس is higher than destined and pre-destined things, all His Personality and Traits are Perfect, All
Seeing, All Hearing, All Knowing (Refer to Allah's 99 Names to learn more about Allah's Personality and Traits,
Asma'ul Husna)
2. Higher and Above all His Creations. All His Creations are subjected under His Supreme Rule. Rabb means Allah
ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس is the master, therefore his creations are His slaves.
3. Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس is Most High in terms of His Existence, which is High and Above. It is our innate nature (fitrah)
to look up and pray looking towards the skies, up high and above.
Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس defines Who He Is. He is the One Who creates everything in perfection. For example, when we try to
study the basic functioning systems of our own body in depth, we will find not only does it consist of many interwoven
systems to make us function as a human, but also meticulous details that go into the creation of just one system! It's
completely phenomenal and cannot be recreated by anyone. How can we then deny the existence of a Creator? How can
we accept that Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس creates everything but do not accept Glorifying Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس?
Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس then sets destiny and provides Guidance for each of His Creation, each suitable for specific creation.
Our innate nature have been provided by Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس, e.g. natural inclination towards good and feeling guilty or
uneasy when we've commited something bad. Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس has also given similar instincts to animals for example
how to scavenge for food, find shelter and survive in the wild. Nature and nurture may change behavior over time but all
of us have been blessed by this knowledge when we're born. Things are created and guided to their destiny and Allah
ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس sends guidance (hidayah) to remind us between right and wrong. We can supress this knowledge through our
actions and refusal to be sincere to our hearts and feelings.
Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس brings out the pasture all over Earth, in various types and colors. Look at the transition from winter to
spring and think about Who is bringing out the greens on Earth when everything looked so barren and dead during
winter. Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس does this out of Mercy for all humanity so we can live and survive on Earth. We should be
grateful and remember Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس at all times.
Then Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس makes the greenery dry and rot, such is the cycle of life. All things are born or germinate, mature
then ultimately face death. This ayaah is also a reminder for us that we will die eventually, nothing escapes death except
The Ever Eternal Living.
These ayaat were sent as a reminder to our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ not to worry about forgetting Qur'anic ayaat
that were revealed to him unless Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس wishes for him to forget any. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ moved his lips
for each phrase when any ayaat was revealed to him for he was worried he would forget them. He put his best effort to
memorize and Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس revealed these ayaat to tell him there was no need for him to do so. He just needed to
listen to the ayaat and Allah will put these ayaat in his memory (and heart). Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was blessed with the
gift of its memorization, our beloved Prophet's special miracle from Allah (mukjizat). For Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس, there is no
difference whether something is evident or hidden for Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس knows all and sees all.
everything we hide in our hearts and we will be evaluated based on our intentions and what lies in the depths of our
hearts as well.
Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس will make it easy for us on the easy path. All the rules given in Islam are easy for us to practice and
they do not go against our innate nature. There are leniency and consideration given for every condition and unique
situation and Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس does not burden us more than we can bear.
The scholars diverge in their opinion of this ayaah. Some scholars say remind others if the reminder is useful, but then
another group of scholars say remind others no matter what for surely reminders will benefit. So for the former, don't
bring the reminder if it's not beneficial to the recipient. And the latter, whether one will benefit or not, we should bring
the reminder for surely some will benefit from them even if others won't. For example, give the reminder to the Pharoah,
maybe he will not listen and benefit from the reminder, but the people around him may benefit from the reminder. We
are asked to give gentle introduction to Islam or gently correct misconceptions and misunderstandings so people are not
creating falsehoods against Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس and our beloved Prophet Muhammad .ﷺ We should remember not to feel
upset if people reject reminders for Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس recounts many stories of all the Prophets (peace be upon them)
where messages and reminders were rejected. Our task as khalifah is just to spread the message and reminders and by
Allah's Will and Mercy, we will receive the reward from Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس for doing our part.
Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس says the ones who will benefit from the reminder are the ones who are mindful of Him, who are
fearful of the punishment of Hell Fire (Jahannam) on Judgment Day.
And those who will not listen will stay away from these reminders. The power of guidance surely only comes from Allah
One can listen to just a verse and his/her heart is moved towards Allah
Islam. Then there are those who listen to the entire Qur'an and his/her heart is not moved at all.
Those who will not listen and pay heed to these reminders will end up in Big Fire. Why did Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس say Big
Fire? This implies there's Small Fire, meaning Jahannam has different levels, just like Paradise (Jannah). And there is an
opinion that the smallest level of Jahannam, meaning the lightest punishment, is such that only your feet touch the fire
and your head/brains are burning up with the heat.
Then Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس says they will neither live nor die in Jahannam. This is a painful condition whereby one is not
living due to being subjected to unbearable pain, therefore is unable to do anything due to the pain. Then one wishes for
death so the pain will stop but death will not occur. Thus, Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس describes the agony which awaits those who
deny His message. The pain is described to be so painful that if you went through it on Earth, you would die from the
pain yet you cannot die from it in Jahannam, so you will have to endure the pain even though it is unendurable. The
people of Jahannam will ask the angel guarding the gates of Jahannam, Malaikat Malik, to end the pain and let them die
but he will tell them they cannot die. Then the people of Jahannam requests for the pain to be reduced but there will be
no reduction in the pain and torment in Jahannam. What a difficult and painful torment awaits those who deny Allah's
message!
Those who purify themselves, in terms of their hearts, mindset, personality, thoughts, and behavior and remove any atom
of hatred in their heart and have love for all mankind before death knocks on one's door, these are the successful ones.
Those who perform dhikr (the remembrance of Allah ٰىَلاَعَت َو ُهَناَحۡبُس) and perfect their prayers. They always remember to
perform their ibadaat regardless of their busy livelihood on Earth. Dhikr is something easy to do, brings high rewards
but most people will not remember to do it. A lot of our time today is kept busy with technology, social media and
livelihood commitments that we lose quiet time to make dhikr.
But most people would prefer this life because it is now and most obvious while we are living it even though it's only
temporary. Life on Earth is not perfect. Everything that is promised and guaranteed in Paradise is not a certainty on
Earth. And what is given on Earth is not permanent. Anything given on Earth can be taken away in an instant.
The akhirat (end) is better and eternal. Life in the Hereafter is perfect. There's no feeling of tired, there's no difficulty,
there's no ill feelings or thoughts towards each other, everyone is content and happy and at peace with everyone and
13. everything around them.
And Allah ٰىَلا َعَت َو ُهَناَحۡب ُس reminds that these messages are not new, they have been given before to previous Prophets.
Scriptures with similar message has been sent to Prophet Ibrahim a.s., Prophet Musa a.s., and to their people,
respectively.

Once a man was driving two Nadihas (camels used for agricultural purposes) and night had fallen. He found Mu`adh praying so he made his
camel kneel and joined Mu`adh in the prayer. The latter recited Surat 'Al-Baqara" or Surat "An-Nisa", (so) the man left the prayer and went
away. When he came to know that Mu`adh had criticized him, he went to the Prophet, and complained against Mu`adh. The Prophet said
thrice, "O Mu`adh ! Are you putting the people to trial?" It would have been better if you had recited "Sabbih Isma Rabbika-l-A`la (87)",
Wash-shamsi wa duhaha (91)", or "Wal-laili idha yaghsha (92)", for the old, the weak and the needy pray behind you." Jabir said that
Mu`adh recited Sura Al-Baqara in the `Isha' prayer.

29. Narrated Jabir (RA):
Mu'adh bin Jabal (RA) led his companions in the al-'Isha (night prayer) and prolonged it for them. Upon this the Prophet ()ﷺ said to him, "O
Mu'adh, do you want to become a Fattan? When you lead people in prayers, recite ash-Shamsi wa duhaha (Surat 91), Sabbihisma Rabbikal-
A'la (Surat 87), Iqra' Bismi Rabbika (Surat 96) and Wal-Laili idha yaghsha (Surat 92)." [Agreed upon. And the wording is from Muslim].

30. It was narrated that Hudhaifah said:
"I prayed with the Prophet ()ﷺ one night. He started to recite Al-Baqarah and I thought, 'he will bow when he reaches one hundred,' but he
carried on. I thought, 'he is going to recite the whole surah in one rak'ah,' but he carried on. He started to recite An-Nisa' and recited (the
whole surah), then he started to recite Al Imran and recited (the whole surah), reciting slowly. When he reached a verse that spoke of
glorifying Allah (SWT), he glorified Him. When he reached a verse that spoke of supplication, he made supplication. When he reached a
verse that spoke of seeking refuge with Allah, he sought refuge with Him. Then he bowed and said: 'Subhana Rabbiyal-Azim.(Glory be to
my Lord Almighty)', and he bowed for almost as long as he had stood. Then he raised his head and said: 'Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah
hears those who praise Him)', and he stood for almost as long as he had bowed. Then he prostrated and started to say: Subhana Rabbiyal-'Ala
(Glory be to my Lord Most High),' and he prostrated for almost as long as he had bowed.'"
