• Introduction:
• The word “ spirituality” derives from the latin word Spiritus,. Which
refers to breath or wind . The spirit gives life to , or animates a
person. It signifies whatever is at the centre of a aspects of a person
life . A person’s health depends on a balance of physical,
psychological, sociological, cultural and spiritual factor.

5. • Definition :. spirituality is anything that patient to a person’s
relationship with a non material life force or higher power.
• Elements of spirituality include:
• Spirituality is experienced as a unifying force , life principle essence of
being.

underlie all religious traditions and are common to all people
• 1) need for meaning and purpose.
• 2) need for love and relatedness .
• 3) need for forgiveness.
8. Concept Related to spirituality
• Faith :. Faith is the confident beliefs in something for which there is
no proof of material evidence it can be a person’ idea or thing for
example if i have faith in my doctor i am more likely to follow the
prescribed plan of care and experience the benefit.
• Hope :. Hope is the part of life responsible for positive outlook even
in hopeless or miserable moments it is important to handle all type of
situations coming in life and face the reality without escaping from it
• Hope is unique to each person nurses should try to create hope in
terminally ill patients and in those who are feeling hopeless in certain
situations..
9. • Religion :. Religion refers to an organized system of beliefs about a
higher power nurses provide care to people from many different
religious traditions.
• It is not possible to be knowledgeable about all religions, but Nurses
may be able to meet patient’s spiritual needs when they understand
their religious beliefs and practices these can directly influence the
patient’s response to illness.
• Self care practices such as diet and hygiene, birth and death rituals
and spiritual practices.

• It is the ability to find meaning and purpose in life by connecting with self
nature or some greater power some benefits of spiritual well – being are as

• It provides confidence to accept challenges of life .
• It hepls to establish a relationship with a power greater than oneself.

• Many factors can influence a person’s spirituality and some of the
important factors are se follows.
• Developmental consideration:
• At a young age, children may not be able to understand spirituality as
the child matures life experience usually influences his or her
spiritual beliefs.
• With advancing age the person’s tendency to think about life after
death may prompt them to re – examine their spiritual beliefs.

• A child’s parents play an important role in the development of
spirituality the child learns from the parent’s behavior about god life
and self .
• Ethnic background:
• Religious traditions differ among ethnic groups. There are differences
between the indian and western spiritual traditions as well as among
the individual ethnic groups .

• Both positive and negative life experience can influence spirituality
for example a women believing in god loses her child in an accident
after his incident she may deny God’s existence due to her bad life
experience.
