2. Horror genre 1930s-60s
1930s – horror films were usually based on characters such
as Dracula and Frankenstein. This was because there
weren’t much technology so the characters were easy to
produce.
1950/60s – Between these years, films such as Godzilla
were made to scare people in war, to make people think
that nuclear bomb radiation would create a giant
dinosaur.
3. Horror genre 1970s-2000s
1970s – These are the years where some sort of realistic
effect was added to Horror films as more of the audience
wanted to see realistic films.
2000s – In the 2000s, films such as SAW were made. The
producers felt that if they made hybrid
genre(horror/comedy), they would gain more profit. In
these years, the audience of horror became larger as CGI
introduced.
4. Sub genres
Comedy – One example of a comedy horror is Shaun of the
Dead. This is mainly a horror though as there is a zombie
apocalypse, but is also is a comedy because of the phrases
they use.
Realism – A lot of people like the fact that a lot of horror
films are based on true stories e.g. murderers.
Supernatural – These are popular because many people
like to see ghosts in films, these are produced through the
use of CGI.
5. Technology Impact
Technology had a big impact on horror movies. More
science fiction(hybrid genre with horror) movies were
made as they had advanced use of CGI. There were many
other special effects to make certain stunts and effects
look even more realistic.
6. Classification
Classification is the minimum age you have to be watch a
film. This usually gives us a guideline of how violent the
film is. Horror films usually tend to be a 15 or 18. A 15
usually contains a larger amount of violence but not really
any gore, whereas an 18 usually contains a lot of gore.
Both of these age ratings contain a lot of strong language.
7. Censorship
The BBFC is the company that works on censorship in the
UK. One example of censorship in a film is Human
Centipede. Human Centipede 2 was banned from the UK
as they thought that it could harm people psychologically.
It’s rare that you see a film banned as only 1% of films are
banned in the world.
8. My Film: Lights Out
Monster – Ghost
Technology – The technology used is CGI, this is the only
advanced part of technology used.
Societies taste – Films with ghosts in it, usually gets a lot
views. Society wants the ghost to look realistic otherwise
there is no point in watching something that could not be
true.
In this film, there was nothing happening in the world at
the time, as it was set in a present/current world.
