In 2022, the ICT4Water research cluster released an updated Digital Water Action plan calling for enablers supporting data sharing and Intelligent and smart systems deployment. The FIWARE solutions, the NGSI-LD specification and related Digital twin approach for decision support have been identified as key prospects to answer these challenges. This session will summarise the ICT4Water.

The ICT4WATER research cluster
Established in 2012 at the initiative of the European Commission DG CNECT
A community of EU funded projects aiming to boost the digital transformation of the
water sector,
Over 60 EU-funded projects participating in the cluster.
Aims to foster collaborations between the member projects, to act as a hub for
innovative activities related to digital water, creating synergies, organizing and
participating at major exhibitions and scientific events, and disseminating results
through major channels, ultimately contributing to EC strategic views and policies.

Extracts from the action plan
▪ Action plan v6 available on-line (ICT4Water website)
▪ [DS] Enabling data sharing
• DS_1 Development and extension of smart data models
• DS_2 Demonstrate value of Data Sharing in the water sector through successful
examples
• DS_4 Extend and expand water interoperability and standardization
▪ [ISS] Intelligent and smart systems
• ISS_1 Deployment of IoT enablers and data models for smart sensors and data
collection (Mentions FIWARE platform in the details)
• ISS_2 Digital twins for real/near time operational management of water systems
• ISS_3 Improve efficiency and circularity in water use and re-use

SEDIMARK: a recent project joining the cluster
• Decentralised marketplace for resources (data,
analytics, services, models) stored on edge systems,
and where the data will be cleaned, labelled,
semantically annotated, validated and anonymized,
so that they can be securely and profitably
exchanged when needed.
• Avoid centralized solutions
• Data lifecycle control
• Data curation pipeline
• AI-based enrichment on top of semantically annotated
data
• Greener solution as context information does not leave its
own context
• Recommendation and data monetisation schemes
• On-demand (distributed) data processing/model training
