2. • Natural heating of the earth’s atmosphere is known as the greenhouse
effect.
• When solar radiations enters the earth’s atmosphere, some of the solar
energy is reflected back to the space and some is absorbed by ‘greenhouse
gases’ which include carbon dioxide, water vapour, methane and nitrous
oxide.
• These molecules absorb long wavelength radiation and transmit short
wavelength. The absorbed energy warms the surface of the earth and the
atmosphere, maintaining the temperature 33o C higher than it would be in
the absence of this effect, thus making life on earth possible. In the
presence of these gases, the emitted radiation is trapped and increases the
temperature of atmosphere.
3. Causes
• Volcanoes
• Combustion of fossil fuels
• Deforestration
• Chlorofluorocarbons The chlorofluorocarbons which mainly
contribute to the greenhouse effect are CFCl3and CF2Cl2.
Chlorofluorocarbons are used as: • Solvent • Refrigerants and • Spray
can propellants
• Greenhouse gases- Co2,methane,ozone,nitrous oxide
4.
5. Impact
• Climate change
• Snowstorms
• Melting ice
• Drought in arid areas
• Ocean acidification- Carbon sink
• Co2 + seawater ------ Decline in pH
• Coral bleaching
