Ettore Elia is a senior manager at TERNA Rete Elettrica Nazionale S.p.A., the Italian transmission system operator, where he is responsible for defining and consulting on Italy's ten-year national transmission network development plan. He has led regional groups within ENTSO-E and participated in defining projects of common interest according to EU regulations. Elia holds an electrical engineering degree from Bari Polytechnic and has published papers on topics including market integration in Europe, integrating variable renewable energy in Italy, and boosting grid integration through evolving ancillary service markets.

Key findings of the project are presented in this publication, which aims to stimulate enlightening and multidisciplinary discussions on low-carbon futures for Finland.
The project gathered together VTT’s technology experts in clean energy production, smart energy infrastructures, transport, buildings, and industrial systems as well as experts in energy system modelling and foresight. VTT’s leading edge “Low Carbon and Smart Energy” enables new solutions with a demonstration that is the first of its kind in Finland, and the introduction of new energy technology onto national and global markets.

ETIP SNET: For an innovative and successful European energy transition
The ETIP Smart Networks for Energy Transition (SNET) role is to guide Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) to support Europe’s energy transition, more specifically, its mission is to set-out a vision for RD&I for Smart Networks for Energy Transition and engage stakeholders in this vision.
In this webinar the ETIP SNET role and main priorities will be introduced by its chairman Konstantin Staschus. Eric Peirano will present the new 10 year ETIP SNET Research & Innovation Roadmap 2017-2026. The roadmap provides a system view and addresses a scope larger than smart electricity grids by encompassing interactions with the gas and heat networks and focuses on integration of all flexibility solutions into the power system, including energy storage technologies.
Flexibility Tracker Country Report - Italy
The technical challenges of integrating high shares of variable renewable energy sources (VRES) are considered mostly known and manageable. Nevertheless, the institutional challenges to ensure sufficient flexibility resources are available remain substantial.
This report gives the main findings of a standardized flexibility tracker analysis for the case of Italy. The present status of flexibility resources potential and implementations are highlighted, as well as comparisons with other systems and recommendations for further work.
Tracker highlights
The results show that the countries rank differently regarding the various flexibility options, highlighting the potential to learn from best practices.
The comparative scoring points again at the Italian system characteristics of having a highly flexible conventional fleet and relatively well-developed grids and interconnections. The reason for the former is Italy’s high share of gas and hydro power plants in generation capacities, while the ambition in smart grid/meter pilot projects explains the latter. Italy has made good progress regarding energy efficiency too, and is on track to meet its 2020 targets.
Looking at the market side, Italy still has room for improvement and further work ahead in integrating its wholesale and mainly balancing markets. The participation of the demand side is less-developed compared to other countries. Examples for good practices in these areas are the extensive integration of the demand side flexibility and aggregation in Belgium’ wholesale balancing market and the advanced German wholesale market (incl. intra-day). Additional potential to increase the flexibility of the Italian electricity system is a stronger link to other sectors like the heating/cooling and transport sectors.

The European project OSMOSE has developed different models from nodal to zonal market architectures to assess the economic value of different flexibility mixes (load, generation and power flows) in future power system scenarios. The Implementation Plan aims at listing the short-term priorities for R&I in ETIP SNET’s scope and as defined by the action 4 of the EU’s Strategic Energy Technology Plan: Increase the resilience, security and smartness of the energy system. It is based upon the ETIP-SNET R&I roadmap 2017-2026 which specifies the long-term R&I activities for the evolution of the European energy system and published in January 2017.
The Implementation Plan is the result of a long and comprehensive stakeholders consultation process which makes it widely recognised by all the European energy transition stakeholders.
Medium size PV plant
This application note provides an overview of the most relevant characteristics and considerations regarding commercial and tertiary sector photovoltaic (PV) power plants (100 kW to 2 MW). It is aimed at potential investors, including industrial and tertiary sector companies, communities and financial institutions, among other parties.
Over the past decade, the competitiveness of PV as opposed to other electricity sources has improved considerably, mainly driven by new technological improvements and cost reductions per unit of installed power. In many situations, PV systems represent a profitable and relatively low risk investment opportunity. Nevertheless, a case-by-case analysis should be performed to properly evaluate each project.
The principal technological choices to be made during a PV plant development project concern the actual PV panels, the mounting structures, the inverter, and the storage system. Relatively few major types of systems are currently available on the market for each of these components. This application note describes their main advantages and disadvantages. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the difficulties and risks that can be encountered during the PV plant development process.
The business model of the project will be determined by the local system of government incentives. This application note depicts key issues related to financing and the economics of a PV investment. It describes the choice between a corporate loan and a leasing formula and the calculation of the Internal Rate of Return (IRR). Finally, it executes a sensitivity analysis on the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of the PV plant. The cost of the EPC contractor and the local irradiation level turn out to be major parameters influencing the result. The discount rate and the lifetime of the PV plants influence the LCOE to a lesser extent. Note that the LCOE needs to be compared with retail electricity prices for residential PV projects, with commercial electricity rates before VAT for company PV projects, and with the cost of other electricity generation sources (e.g. a gas fired combined cycle plant) for electrical utility PV projects.

Smart Grid is designed with a control system that self-analyzes its performance using intelligent autonomous reinforcement learning controllers that are able to learn new strategies and successfully implementing such strategies to govern the behavior of the grid in the face of an ever changing environment such as equipment failures.
2. Motivate consumers to actively participate in operations of the grid
If consumers have freedom to control own usage of energy, they will be motivated to participate and be part of the system. They can monitor their usage and manipulate by the assistance of “smart appliances” and “intelligent equipment” in homes or businesses. Advanced communications capabilities equip customers with tools to exploit real-time electricity pricing, incentive-based load reduction signals, or emergency load reduction signals.
3. Resist attack
Most important issues of resist attack is the smart monitoring of power grids, which is the basis of control and management of smart grids to avoid or mitigate the system-wide disruptions like blackouts.
4. Accommodate all energy generation and storage options
Smart Grid integrates two power generation source; traditional power generation likes fossil fuel powered power plant with renewable power generations either generates from residential, commercial, and industrial customers that will improves reliability and power quality, reduces electricity costs, and offers more customer choice.
5. High quality power
Outages and power quality issues is common for any country especially for major industrial-based countries. Smart Grid provides more stable power provided that will reduce downtime and prevent such high losses because of

His mainresponsibilitiesare about the definition and consultation of the Ten Years National Transmission Network Development Plan for Italy (including electricity generation and demand planning scenarios, transmissionexpansionandinterconnectionprojects, cost benefit analyses of transmission investments).
