The document describes plans for a slavery museum complex in Dakar, Senegal. It will have three main parts: an underground "Ditch of Death" walkway representing the conditions slaves faced; a central "Plaza of Reconciliation" with a freedom monument; and a rising "Investigations and Slavery Museum" building housing exhibits on the slave trade. The complex aims to educate visitors about the history and hardship of slavery through its design and facilities.
1. SLAVERY MUSEUM
The slavery episode of the African Continent was the key reason for the International Architecture Contest
convened by the UIA Institution, for a Memorial complex in Dakar City, Senegal1999. A great Conceptual
Project was presented encouraged by EPROYIV Cuban Institution.
With three main related organisms under a dynamic concept, the composition will be directed to show the
history and hardship conditions of the slaves’ life on that age.
Onlookers will walks as a procession throughout an object called “Ditch of Death” with 8880.22sq.ft. That
underground area is a lineal space and half-closed by a spiral skeleton similar to the wood structure of the
settlers’ ships. This organ will merge on the “Plaza of Reconciliation” what includes the “Monument of
freedom” as a big panorama observatory located at the end of the ascendant movement of the building with 263
ft. of height whose expression is a broken chain on their higher part, what means the freedom for the new
generations and the rupture with the dark past.
The “Investigations and Slavery Museum” building will arise from the earth with an ascending movement on
oval development that surrounds the open space or “Plaza of Reconciliation”.
Extensive area and three floors allowed zoning every functional space accorded by the official program
requirements. A Sailing Museum and a Slavery Museum will allow the visitors a visual tour regarding to the
slavery history on Africa. All spaces disposition was analyzed to incorporate the Scientifics and investigation
areas, also a big library of consultation opened to the public services.
Was planned a Planetarium Associated with the museums, in order to improve the knowledge of marine
orientation and the Astrology sciences. Stores, Cafeteria and Restaurants disposed to complement the planning
of customer amenities. Connected with the main lobby, the construction will descend several levels till a boat
landing to pick up and take the visitors to the “Goree Island” where the slaves were carried before the sea
voyage to the Americas land.
A fresh waterfront environment and a huge landscaping design will support the general concepts in contrast
with the aggressive composition and structure of the construction. The Deconstructive image is the resource
utilized to express the human mentality development, against the pro-slavery ideologies.
