2. Guide Card
Converts measurements from one unit to another in Metric
System of Measurements
Subtasks:
1. Identifying the direction of conversion based on
the metric system line
2. Multiplying quantities by powers of 10
3. Dividing quantities by powers of 10
4. Converting Metric system of measurement
3. The Metric System of Measurement is easier to use than the English System
of Measurement since its conversion factors would consistently be in the decimal
system. The base unit for length is the meter and its units longer or shorter than
the meter would be achieved by adding prefixes to the base unit. These prefixes
may also be used for the base units for mass, volume, time and other
measurements.
It is also necessary to introduce the use of Metric System Line in converting
metric system measurements. It will provide assistance on what operation to be
use (multiplication or division) depending on the direction of the conversion
process. Each interval uses power of 10.
mm cm dm m dam hm km
PREFIX SYMBOL FACTOR
milli m x 0.001
centi c x 0.01
deci d x 0.1
deka da x 10
hector h x 100
kilo k x 1000
Metric System is the
prescribed system of
measurement in the
Philippines.
Gabriel Mouton is the
Founding Father of Metric
System of Measurement.
4. When the direction of conversion on the Metric System Line is going to the RIGHT, you DIVIDE. When
the direction of conversion on the Metric System Line is going to the LEFT, you MULTIPLY. Each step from
one unit to another is equivalent to powers of 10. That is, 1 step equals 10, 2 steps equal 100, 3 steps equals
1000, 4 steps equals 1000 and so on.
EXAMPLE:
When converting millimeter to meter, you go to the RIGHT 3 steps. Thus, you divide by 1000.
mm cm dm m dam hm km
When converting kilometer to dekameter, you go to the LEFT 2 steps. Thus, you multiply by
100.
mm cm dm m dam hm km
5. I. Directions: Based on the metric system line below, identify the direction of the conversion process – LEFT or
RIGHT. The first one is done for you.
1. meter to kilometer Answer: RIGHT
2. dekameter to centimeter Answer: __________
3. millimeter to hectometer Answer: __________
4. meter to centimeter Answer: __________
5. decimeter to kilometer Answer: __________
mm cm dm m dam hm km
II. Directions: Given the same items above, determine the operation to be use, MULTIPLICATION OR
DIVISION. Write MULTIPLY if the direction is LEFT and DIVIDE if the direction is RIGHT.

6. When multiplying powers of 10, move the decimal point to the right based on the number of zeroes.
Example:
34.34 x 10 = 343.4 (10 has 1 zero thus, move one decimal place to the right
34.34 x 100 = 3434 (100 has 2 zeroes thus, move two decimal places to the right)
0.034 x 1000 = 34 (1000 has 3 zeroes thus, move three decimal places to the right)
On the other hand, if there is no decimal point on a given quantity, count the number of zeroes and add it to the given quantity.
Example:
34 x 10 = 340 (10 has 1 zero thus, add one zero to the answer)
34 x 100 = 3400 (100 has 2 zeroes thus, add two zeroes to the answer.)
Directions: Find the product of the following quantities.
1. 0.135 x 100 = 13.5
2. 82.75 x 1000 = __________________
3. 15 x 10000 = ____________________
4. 0.003 x 10 = ____________________
5. 132.58 x 100 = ___________________
7. When dividing powers of 10, move the decimal point to the left based on the number of zeroes.
Example:
34.34 ÷ 10 = 3.434 (10 has 1 zero thus, move one decimal place to the left)
34.34 ÷ 100 = 0.3434 (100 has 2 zeroes thus, move two decimal places to the left)
0.034 ÷ 1000 = 0.000034 (1000 has 3 zeroes thus, move three decimal places to the left)
Directions: Find the quotient of the following quantities.
1.) 48.5 ÷ 100 = 0.485
2.) 1879.5 ÷ 1000 = __________________
3.) 9.356 ÷ 100 = ____________________
4.) 15.92 ÷ 10 = ____________________
5.) 666.98 ÷ 100 = ___________________
8. Directions: Convert the following metric measurement. You may use the metric system line.
mm cm dm m dam hm km
1.) 53.92 m to cm = 5392 cm
2.) 392.65 mm to dm = _______________
3.) 0.118 km to cm = _________________
4.) 4.86 hm to m = ___________________
5.) 0.06 m to mm = __________________
