1. Cherry Drive, Pasadena:A small, lowcottage was replaced by a 1700 sf Contemporary Craftsman, with exposed laminated
beam ceilings throughout, modern kitchen, and largecovered deck. The 500 squarefoot second story master suite
overlooks the canyon localewith a private balcony.Idiosyncratic lowwindows strategically placed provideviews and
natural lightwithoutsacrificingprivacy.A handsome"copper green" standingseam metal roof finishes thebuilding.
PleasantWay,Pasadena:A classicsinglelevel Post& Beam structureoriginally designed by Cal Straub of the storied
Pasadena architectural firmBuff,Straub and Hensman in 1959,this home is sited on a steeply slopingdownhill lotwith
stunningviews of three mountain ranges - the San Gabriel's,San Bernardino's,and San Jacinto's.
In perfect harmony with the 10' - 8" x 12' grid, three bedrooms and a full bath in twelve hundred squarefeet
were seamlessly transformed into a master suite, a guest suite, and powder room. Hangingcabinets separatingthe kitchen
from the livingroom/diningroomwere removed to open up the entire space, and counter & cabinetspacewere increased
without alteringthe floor plan.
All infrastructurewas replaced, and all finish surfaces includingplumbing& lightingfixtures, cabinets & counter-
tops, and Brazilian cherry plank flooringarenew.
This home was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places, oneof the firstModernistbuildings in
the nation to be so honored. In the media: Sunset Magazine.
2. Glen Oaks,Pasadena:As the second phaseof the
"Glen Oaks Boulevard"property, this places a new
lap pool, spa, and "pool house" alongthe narrow
crest of the largesiteoverlookingthe Arroyo Seco
in Pasadena.The integrated pool/pavilion
structure completes the composition of the
remodeled main house and bookends a newly
builtdetached garage on the far sideof the main
house. Each buildingis rendered in a common
structural vocabulary of "L" shaped concrete block
piers, laminated wood beams, and round concrete
columns.
The pool & buildingaresited to take full
advantage of views and prevailingbreezes with
fold-away walls of glassturningthe structure into
an open-air entertainment pavilion floatingover
the pool, spa and Arroyo Seco. A largewet bar, full
bath, and storageroom areincluded in the floor
plan. The roof is canted to allowoptimum
exposure to the southern sun for roof mounted
solar panels to heat the pool and spa; all floors&
counter-tops are finished concrete; the water
heater is tank less and on-demand.
By locatingthe pool equipment in a tower
separated from the pavilion by six feet, and
wrappingthese two elements of the design around
the "insidecorner"of the L (Site Plan),an aperture
was created to act as the transition fromthe more
formal courtyard (between house and pavilion) to
the native landscapeand wild granitetopography
of the "point" beyond.
The swimming pool edge disappears on two sides,
the floor platformis cantilevered over the slope,
and from below the structures appear to hover
above the steep hillside.Roof rafters were taper-
cut on site from laminated wood beams to segue
into the sky above. Precisecraftsmanship was
required to make minimalist-detailing work
effortlessly.
