Best Practices for Extending iPhone Battery Life
A few commonsense tips can help extend battery lifespan and battery life on an iPhone. Perhaps the
most important tip is keeping your iPhone out of the hot sun or a hot car. Heat shortens the battery’s
performance the most.
Some Key Terms
“Battery life” is the interval between which the battery must be recharged. “Battery lifespan” means
the amount of time before a battery must be replaced. Normal battery lifespan is two to three years.
“Usage” is the amount of time an iPhone has been awake or in use since the last full charge. Checking
email, placing a call, browsing the web, or sending text messages all account for usage. Background
tasks such as auto-checking for email are also part of usage.
“Standby” is the amount of time the iPhone has been powered on since the last charge, including time
both awake or asleep.
View usage statics by tapping Settings > General > Usage. Under Time since last full charge, you will
find both usage and standby times.
Keep It Cool
Heat is an iPhone battery’s worst enemy. Do not leave
the phone in a hot car or in the sun. Keep your iPhone
as near room temperature as possible.
Optimize settings
Some iPhone features will decrease an iPhone’s battery life. Knowing which features consume
energy is one step toward preserving battery life.
Turn on Auto-brightness: The iPhone’s ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the screens
brightness based on surrounding light. Turn on auto-brightness to save battery life so the
screen will use less power in dark places. Find it in Settings > Brightness > Auto-brightness On.
Turn off Bluetooth: The iPhone’s Bluetooth feature is useful for pairing the phone with wireless
headsets, newer automobiles, and other devices. But, transmitting data by Bluetooth
consumes the battery, so turn off Bluetooth except when pairing with another device. Find it in
Settings > General > Bluetooth > slide to Off.
Keep Wi-Fi off: The iPhone can also connect to wireless networks using the built-in Wi-Fi
capability. While Wi-Fi networks are faster at transmitting data, turn Wi-Fi off when not in use.
Find it in Settings > WiFi > slide to Off.
Ideal iPhone operating temp is 32◦F to 95◦F

Auto-lock sooner: Set the iPhone to go to sleep, a feature known as auto-lock. Our Cell Phone
Acceptable Use Policy recommends employees use this feature. The sooner the phone sleeps,
the less power it consumes. Set Auto-lock for one to two minutes to help maximize battery life.
Find it in Settings > General > Auto-Lock.
Turn off push notifications: Some iPhone apps use the Apple Push Notification service to alert
users of new data or information. Apps that extensively rely on push notifications negatively
impact battery life, so disable push notifications for most apps. Find it in Settings >
Notifications > disable notification for Selected Applications.
Turn off push mail/turn on fetch: iPhones are configured to retrieve company email from
Microsoft Outlook. Maintaining a constant connection to the server drains the battery.
Alternatively, the phone can be set to fetch mail at hourly intervals. Find it in Settings > Mail,
Contacts, Calendars > Push > slide to Off. Also enable fetch, found under Settings > Main,
Contacts, Calendars > Fetch > Hourly.
Turn off equalizer: The iPod app offers an equalizer feature to auto adjust bass, treble, etc.
These adjustments are made instantly and require more power, so unless you’re a true
audiophile turn the equalizer off to conserve battery life. Find it in Settings > iPod > EQ > slide
to Off.
Additional tips
Drain the battery monthly: Proper maintenance of lithium-ion batteries, the kind found in
iPhones, requires full discharges and recharges. Be sure to go through at least one full charge
cycle each month by charging the battery to 100%, then completely running it down.
End background apps: Apps do not gracefully shut down on an iPhone. Rather, they keep
running in the background and continue consuming battery life. To end apps running in the
background, tap the round home button twice. Then, tap and hold a running application.
When the apps begin to wiggle, tap the top left of each running application to close.
Upgrade to the latest iOS: Apple recommends upgrading iPhones to the latest iOS operating
system. Apple engineers regularly find ways to optimize battery performance and resolve
defects in the operating system. Contact the IT Support Center for assistance with upgrading
your iPhone to the latest iOS.
