4. Online catalog:
The online catalog searches for any item that is cataloged and available for check-out in the
library, including books, videotapes, and CD-ROMs. Also in the online catalog are titles on
Reserve (including textbooks used in classes) and Reference (for example, encyclopedias of
drugs and diseases). Books and videos are shelved by call number on the book shelves. Reserve
and reference materials are shelved on specific shelves.
The online catalog is available on all of the computers in the Computer Lab and the Library.
To search the online catalog, follow these steps:
Double-click on the shortcut on the computer monitor marked OnLine CAT.
This box will appear:
Click the OK button.

The call number on the same screen as Title, Author, etc. tells you the location of the
book, video, etc. The call number is a Library of Congress call number, which is
assigned by subject and author. The books and videos are on the shelves in order by call
number. Call numbers include letters and numbers. To find a book on the shelves, look
first by letter(s), then by the number after the letter(s), then by the letter-number
combination after the number, then by the date of publication. CD-ROMs are kept in the
Librarian’s office; please see the Librarian for help with CD-ROMs.
To check details of other titles on the list click the left or right hand arrows at the bottom
of the screen to go backward or forward on the list.

9. CINAHL database:
In addition to searching the online catalog for books, videos, and CD-ROMs to check out of the
library, we have a nursing database in the library which you can search for articles. This is the
CINAHL database. CINAHL stands for Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health
Literature.
The CINAHL database is available on all of the computers in the Computer Lab and the Library.
To search the CINAHL database, follow these steps:
Double-click the shortcut on the desktop marked WinSPIRS 5.0 (it looks like a hand holding
several books).

10. To select dates to search, click on the line with the range of dates, then click the Add button,
then click the OK button. The range of dates you select will appear in the box marked Use
these databases: (If you want to search more than one range of dates, hold down the Ctrl
button on the computer keyboard – which is on the lower left-hand side of the keyboard – and
click on as many databases you want, then click the Add button, then click the OK button.)
The following screen will appear:
This is legal information from the publisher. Click the OK button to continue.
The following screen will appear:
7
11. To start a search, click inside the white box to the right of the word Search.
Type in a word or phrase, then click the button marked Search to the right of the white box.
Your results will appear in the lower half of the screen. Results are displayed in
chronological order, the most recent listed first, then backward after that. You will see your
results as citations of articles; you cannot see the full-text of the article.
You will see the word or phrase you searched underlined and in red text in each citation. If
you do not see the word or phrase in the citation, then the word or phrase is within the text of
the article.
The abbreviations for each citation are as follow:
TI: Title of the article.
AU: Author(s) of the article.
SO: Source of the article, including journal title, abbreviation of the journal title, date of
the issue of the journal, volume and issue number of the journal, page numbers of the
article, and number of references at the end of the article.
Citations may occasionally come from books. Instead of SO in the citation, it will read BK.
TI will be the name of the book. If the title is a chapter in a book, TI will be the title of the
chapter; after IN: is the title of the book. AU is the author(s) of the book. The information
after BK is for the publisher: the name of publisher, place of publication, date of publication,
number of the edition, and number of pages.
To scroll down a list of citations, click on the single-down arrow in the lower right-hand
corner of the screen.
You can also search for more than one term or phrase at a time. If looking for a combination
of words or phrases, you have to type the word AND (in capital letters) between each word or
phrase. If looking for a choice of words or phrases, you have to type the word OR (in capital
letters) between each word or phrase. If you want to exclude certain words or phrases, type
the word NOT (in capital letters) before the word or phrase you want to exclude. (Type NOT
and the word(s) to exclude last.)
If you want to search for a choice of words combined with a choice of other words, you have
to include each set of words in parentheses, with AND between the sets of words. Examples:
(cardiac OR thoracic) AND surgery
(psychological OR psychiatric) AND (medication OR therapy)
(exercise OR walking) AND (pulmonary OR lungs)
8
12. To add more terms to results, type the results number (#3, #5, etc.), then type AND followed
by additional words.
To print citations, click the Print button near the top of the screen. If you click the Print
button, it will print all of the citations, not just the ones you seen on the first screen. If you
want to print a range of citations after you click Print, click the word Records on the lower
half of the box (or the white button next to the word Records), then type in the numbers of
the citations. (You can see the number of the citation if you click within the citation – the
number of the citation will be in the box just above the first citation you see on the screen.
Do this before clicking Print.)
You can also select specific citations to print. Click on the little picture of an open book at
the beginning of each citation you want (the arrow will turn into a marker; when you click on
the open book, it will be marked with a red check mark). After checking all the citations you
want, click Print (the circle next to Marked Records will be marked on the Print Records
box); then click the Print button.
To do a new search, click inside the white box to the right of Search near the top.
TO QUIT THE CINAHL DATABASE:
Click the X in the upper right-hand corner of the screen where you type in the terms in the
Search box. Click the Exit button.

13. Additional library information:
The photocopier in the library requires a debit card in order to make copies. To buy debit
cards, go to the Cashier’s window at the Hospital (to the left just before the Information Desk
as you enter the Hospital through the entrance on Jamestown Avenue). Tell the Cashier you
want to buy a debit card for the copier at the School of Nursing, and pay either $5, $10, or
$20. The Cashier will give you a receipt. Bring the receipt to the Librarian. The Librarian
will give you a pre-charged debit card. The debit cards are inserted in the slot near the top of
the machine to the left of the copier, top side up, with the arrow facing the front of the
machine. (The card will pull itself in, like an ATM card; you do not need to force the card
in.) The Librarian can assist you in using the copier. Copies cost 10¢ per page; double-sided
copies cost 20¢ per page. The debit card deducts 10¢ for each copy you make. The digital
display on top of the machine where you insert the card tells you how much money is left on
your debit card. To eject your card, hold down the orange button near the top of the machine.
When your card runs out of money, the digital display will read all zeroes. Give your empty
debit card to the Librarian. Empty debit cards can be recharged for future use.
A list of the journals the library subscribes to is on the index table closest to the back of the
library. Journals are listed in alphabetical order. Volume numbers and dates held by the
library are listed after each title. Journals are kept on the shelves in alphabetical order,
beginning in the back room of the library. Current issues, including the most recent issue and
current year, are kept on the large rack against the wall in the back room of the library.
Bound volumes are kept several years back. Some bound volumes are kept in the Library
Annex. Please ask the librarian if you need a volume of a bound journal that is not available
on the library shelves.
In addition to the books and videos kept on the library shelves, there are a few shelves of
reserve videos. These are kept on the last vertical section of shelves after the end of the
books. These videos cannot leave the library. There is a combination TV/VCR in the back
room of the library. You may watch these videos on the TV/VCR.
A print version of the CINAHL index is available on the index table closest to the back of the
library. The print index is updated quarterly. The librarian can assist you in using the printed
CINAHL index.
Additional information about the library, including hours, circulation periods for materials
that can be checked out, overdue fines, and online literature searches and interlibrary loan
services performed by the librarian, are included in the Student Handbook.

14. Computer Lab:
A computer lab is available for student use. The computer lab is the room just to the right of the
reception desk.
Policies regarding use of the computer lab, including access, acceptable use, and Internet policy,
are included in the Student Handbook.
Additional information about Computer Lab:
Besides the computers in the Computer Lab, there is one computer in the library and three
computers in the back room of the library (where the current issues of the journals are kept).
All of the computers have the CINAHL index, the online catalog, and several other programs.
Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, are on the computers.
There are also several NCLEX-RN (nursing exam) programs on the computers. Some of the
NCLEX-RN programs require the CD-ROM of the program in order to do the exam; some of
the NCLEX-RN programs are stored on the computer itself. CD-ROMs of the NCLEX-RN
programs are available for check-out from the Librarian. All of the NCLEX-RN programs
vary in content, format, and printing.
All of the computers have a continuous connection to the Internet. You do not need to log
onto an Internet Service Provider. To search the Internet, double-click the blue Internet
Explorer icon on the computer screen. The following screen will appear:
11
15. This is the default screen when opening the Internet. It is for Tenet employees to sign in. To go
to an Internet website, click inside the white box to the right of Address, above the screen with
Tenet & Hospital Intranets, then type in a website address (for instance, www.yahoo.com or
www.google.com), then press the Enter button on the keyboard or click Go after the white box
for the Internet website address.
To register on Etenet, see the instructions starting on page 13.
To access courses on .Edu, see the instructions starting on page 17.
There are other computer programs available on the computers in addition to the Internet,
NCLEX-RN exams, Microsoft Office, CINAHL database, and online catalog. These are
marked by “shortcuts” to the program on the computer screen. Some of the programs require
the CD-ROM for operation. Please see the Librarian if you need the CD-ROM to utilize one
of these programs.
Conclusion:
The library and the computer lab offer a wide variety of services.
One of the librarian’s duties is to assist those people who need help in using the facilities
available within the library and the computer lab.
Please do not hesitate at any time to ask the librarian for help.
The librarian is here to help you!
