ROXBOROUGH MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
SCHOOL OF NURSING
LIBRARY ANNUAL REPORT, 2006
Among the achievements over the past academic year:
 From June 1, 2005, to June 1, 2006, 166 copies of articles were sent to 68 libraries across
the United States and Canada. From June 1, 2005, to June 1, 2006, 101 articles from 35
libraries were requested and received.
 From June 1, 2005, to June 1, 2006, 16 online literature searches were conducted.
 The annual Fall Meeting of DEVIC (Delaware Valley Information Consortium), the
regional library group to which the library belongs, was attended in October 2005. On
December 8, 2005, a Resource Sharing Meeting at Jefferson University was attended.
 A Library Committee meeting was held October 17, 2005. Topics discussed at the
meeting included: a book order for nursing education titles; a book order for library
textbooks; cataloging and processing of the most recent book order; and distribution of
materials from publishers to the faculty. Because of changes in personnel of the faculty,
hence the loss of two Library Committee members, there was no Library Committee
meeting in April.
 The annual binding of the previous year’s journals is usually done over the summer. This
year there was a slight delay: because of lack of space in the library for journals that
would return from the bindery, some of the bound journals in the Library Annex were
moved to the third floor in order to move some of the oldest bound journals from the
Library to the Library Annex, which will create enough room in the library for journals
that return from the bindery. Last year a total of 82 volumes were bound; a similar
number of volumes should be bound this year.
 In April, the oldest issues of medical journals at the Medical Library were weeded. This
is done on an annual basis, because some journals are only held for the most recent year
and a certain number of back years.
 Over the past year, 131 titles were weeded from the collection, as they were replaced
with new editions, were out of date, similar material is owned that is more up to date, etc.
 From June 1, 2005, to June 1, 2006, 524 items were cataloged and added to the
collection. This figure includes anything that was purchased for the library: books, CD-
ROMs (most of which came with books), videos, DVDs, etc.
 Earlier this year a shelf list of the books in the library was printed. The shelf list was
checked against the actual holdings on the shelves and in circulation. During this
process, 148 titles that were not on the shelves or in circulation were deleted from the
online catalog and shelf list.
 At the Medical Library, a meeting was held with the members of the Medical Library
Committee in September 2005, to decide which journal subscriptions should be
terminated. This was done because of budget concerns with the cost of subscriptions. It
was decided to stop subscription to seven journals.
 Before the First Year Students’ orientation in July 2005, a Student Resource Guide to the
Library and Computer Lab was compiled. It includes directions for using the online
catalog and online CINAHL database, including screen shots; directions for using the
photocopier; description and location of materials in the library, including journals, books
and videos, and the print version of the CINAHL index; and information about the
Computer Lab, including programs available on the computers. In addition, directions
for registering on Etenet were added at the end. Copies of the Student Resource Guide to
the Library and Computer Lab were distributed to the First Year Students during
orientation. The original of the Student Resource Guide to the Library and Computer
Lab is stored on the Librarian’s computer under My Documents – Library Orientation.
Changes can be made accordingly.
 At the School of Nursing Library, it was decided to cancel 13 journal subscriptions in
order to save money on journals that were redundant or not widely used. This amounted
to a savings of over $2,600. The faculty was surveyed regarding the use of three other
journal titles.
 All of the above were accomplished in addition to other job-related duties that are
performed on a regular basis.
