- Good to see so many different businesses on the call, you’re at different stages in use of the cloud, but share many of the same challenges Background: IT has been been challenged by the responsibility for maintaining legacy and custom applications – often cited as 85% of spend to “keep the lights on”. Under pressure to provide strategic guidance to the business, and stay ahead of rapid changes in technology and business challenges Cloud offers new opportunities to address that – for example SaaS like Salesforce that replaces older custom CRM with a more general cloud solution But you still have business-specific applications that do require custom applications, and that’s where today’s presentation can help
- Problem: rising costs of proprietary products, development and maint of custom products takes too much of IT’s money and focus. - Problem: In the physical data center, provisioning was time consuming and inflexible because of lead time for physical hardware Getting it wrong either constrained IT’s customers, or wasted money
- Problem: proprietary products typically lock you in to functionality and billing. Without competition, you’re a target for higher prices that you must endure Data lock in means that your most precious asset – your data – is also locked in. Bottom line: you need a choice of vendors that offer interoperability of data and functionality
- Problem: the physical provisioning we discussed earlier is a bottleneck, with the result that customers bypass IT and go directly to the cloud for computing resources IT must be able to meet customer’s needs as quickly as they could find their own solutuions – in other words, IT must embrace the cloud Moreover, IT relies on providing a consistent and focused set of computing resources within a business to keep costs down and maximize the value of skill sets PPCD is not only compatible with on-premise, but PPCD Advanced compatibility for Oracle means that PPCD Advanced and Oracle use a common set of skills
- Problem: Develop, Test, Deploy are prime examples of where employees regularly bypass slow hardware provisioning and go directly to the cloud But when IT isn’t involved, employees can select computing resources (not only the database, but operating systems and other services) that may be inconsistent with the target deployment environments Inconsistencies raise the possibility that the systems being developed and tested with will be different than the deployed environment, so additional testing of the deployed environment are required, increasing time to market
