NUMBER LINE
Endia Lovelady
September 16, 2013
OBJECTIVE
This lesson will introduce students to the number line.
Students will learn number placement on the
number line, which numbers are larger or smaller,
and practice skip counting. The students will work
with whole numbers.
INITIATING ACTIVITY
Pass out sheets of red construction paper. Each student receives
one sheet and is instructed to write their assigned student number
on the paper. If students do not have assigned numbers, then
conduct a headcount of the students to obtain numbers. Have
students line up where there is enough space either in the classroom
or hallway in order according to their number. The teacher stands
at the “0” location and places “0” on the floor in front of her.
Instruct the students to place their numbers on the floor in front of
their feet. Check to make sure the numbers are in order and have
the students check as well.
TECHNOLOGY
In the classroom use the Little Monkeys iPad Number line
app to reinforce lesson. Demonstrate counting on the
number line using the frog to hop onto each number. Use
the jump forward and jump backward options to
demonstrate how to go to numbers that are larger and
smaller. Also, use the skip counting options to have students
count by 2’s and 3’s.
