1. Media Homework
Camera shots:Camera shots affect the way the public see what the director wants us to see,
this could mean focusing on one person so the director could use an over the shoulder shot
there are many other shots, however in the first 10 minutes of watching the film this is what
I saw:
Wide shot
Focus shot
Pan out
Zoom out
Medium shot
Zoom in
Over the shoulder shot
Close up
All these were used to affect the way we see the show and when a
camera focuses. In these screenshots from Downton Abbey they
are showing some of the camera shots mentioned.
Sound: The sound in the show is used to create tension, in the
gloomy beginning when we find out that their friends died on the titanic they played gloomy
music to emphasise the darkness of the scenario. Also the music in the background informs
the public how they should be feeling. If there is good news in the
episode this may be represented through happy and cheerful
music.
Mise- En- Scene:
Mise en scene is the whole cast that we see. It includes the
setting, costume, lighting, make up, expression, props and shot
type. If we look at a picture from Downton Abbey everything in
the setting will be a part of the mise en scene.
The Edwardian theme room and
clothing
The lighting is bright to show
both characters
The shot type is a medium shot
as it has both people in the shot
and shows them clearly.
2. Editing:
The editing in Downton Abbey is done after by a department to make the show more
appealing, for example the music is done after and the same team adds the end credits in
order to make the programme stand out the editing department will need to add new
effects to make it look better.
In this scene they have made the
setting brighter and look cleaner
and Edwardian.
Representation of class:
The poor in season 1 episode 1 have to waiter for the rich and their masters, however if
they were to disobey the house leader they will be kicked out their home and become
unemployed. Most servants that work for a manor and their lord have their own bedrooms
which means that they are at disposal all the time. The main housekeepers are mostly
middle class and look after the house and the servants.
