graduated from Harvard Medical School. While
pursuing his doctor of medicine, Dr. Elliott
Bennett-Guerrero was selected to participate
in Doctors’ Diaries, a Public Broadcasting
Service (PBS) documentary.
Supported by NOVA, a science-based
television series, Doctors’ Diaries originally aired
in April 2009. The two-hour special
documented the lives of seven doctors as they
pursued their degrees at Harvard Medical
School.

 In order to provide a perspective on life after graduation,
the doctors were followed by NOVA for two decades as
they detailed their journey and the obstacles that shaped
them into the professionals they are today.
To date, the program is the longest-filmed documentary in
the United States about the field of science and medicine.
The program was produced and directed by Michael
Barnes and scored by Miguel d’Oliveira. Participants from
the Harvard Medical School class of 1991 included Dr.
Cheryl Dorsey, Dr. Tom Tarter, and Dr. Luanda Grazette,
among others.

Percutaneous spine biopsy has widely replaced open biopsy during the last 50 years. Closed biopsy is more cost effective, less invasive, and has fewer complications than open procedures. A literature search was conducted in PubMed for percutaneous spine biopsy. The contributing factors to the success of the biopsy were identified by reviewing the articles and their references. These factors included location and type of lesion, needle system and use of different modalities of imaging as well as the physician’s expertise. Potential complications include pneumothorax, hematoma, nerve root injury, transient paresis, transient spinal anesthesia, meningitis, radiculopathy, and paraplegia. Overviews of the pre and post biopsy workup along with comprehensive description of the determinants of the biopsy outcome are discussed.

ABSTRACT Background In 1991 a new procedure for report- ing physician-assisted deaths was introduced in the Netherlands that led to a tripling in the number of reported cases. In 1995, as part of an evaluation of this procedure, a nationwide study of euthanasia and other medical practices concerning the end of life was begun that was identical to a study conducted in 1990. Methods We conducted two studies, the first involving interviews with 405 physicians (general prac- titioners, nursing home physicians, and clinical spe- cialists) and the second involving questionnaires mailed to the physicians attending 6060 deaths that were identified from death certificates. The response rates were 89 percent and 77 percent, respectively. Results Among the deaths studied, 2.3 percent of those in the interview study and 2.4 percent of those in the death-certificate study were estimated to have resulted from euthanasia, and 0.4 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively, resulted from physician-assisted suicide. In 0.7 percent of cases, life was ended without the explicit, concurrent request of the patient. Pain and symptoms were alleviated with doses of opioids that may have shortened life in 14.7 to 19.1 percent of cases, and decisions to withhold or withdraw life-prolonging treatment were made in 20.2 percent. Euthanasia seems to have increased in incidence since 1990, and the ending of life without the patient’s explicit request seems to have decreased slightly. For each type of medical decision except those in which life-prolonging treatment was with- held or withdrawn, cancer was the most frequently reported diagnosis. Conclusions Since the notification procedure was introduced, end-of-life decision making in the Neth- erlands has changed only slightly, in an anticipated direction. Close monitoring of such decisions is pos- sible, and we found no signs of an unacceptable increase in the number of decisions or of less careful decision making. We could also do conventional "allopathic" medicine, if the patients specifically wanted this, but I would not like to work with anyone, or any place, not open to this possibility. Patients should be entitled to the best, and also have the choice.

Yeet 4 YEAHHH YEET Mr. Maiorano CHC2D1 10 April 2015 How Dr. Frederick Banting Defined Canada All nations attribute the positive aspects of their current status to significant events and achievements accomplished by outstanding citizens throughout history. Canada boasts of heroes and heroines who transformed its own history and that of the world at large. In 1922, one such historical figure by the name of Dr. Frederick Banting became a significant icon in the history of Canada and had managed to define a major part of both what it means to be Canadian and what Canada means to the world. Prior to Dr. Banting’s breakthrough discovery, diabetes often meant a very serious illness signifying the end of life. Dr. Banting had managed to change this brutal reality into one wherein diabetes can be treated and managed through his development of insulin. Through making such an important advancement in medical science, Dr. Banting had most defined the progressive, compassionate, and globally important nation of Canada that we know today. Through a series of experiments that Dr. Banting and his team began in 1921, patients with Type 1 diabetes have since been given hope of living through their condition (Sherman). Their research relied on an earlier discovery on the two roles of pancreas in the body; that is, produce digestive juices and secrete a substance that seemed to regulate glucose level in the bodies of animals (“The Discovery of Insulin”). The glucose regulating substance became the key in treatment of patients suffering from Type 1 diabetes. Dr. Banting discovered that he could transfer this substance from the pancreas of one dog and inject it to another whose ability to regulate glucose levels had artificially been altered (“The Discovery of Insulin”). The results were groundbreaking and the diabetic dogs responded well to the injections, marking a major step forward in diabetes research (“The Discovery of Insulin”). Through the help of Professor John Macleod of the University of Toronto, they were able to continue their research (“The Discovery of Insulin”). Finally, in January of 1922, testing Dr. Banting’s developments in diabetes treatment on human beings had finally been completed and the results led to the ultimate development of the insulin treatment that is still used to this day (Simoni, Hill and Vaughan 31). Dr. Banting’s research and subsequent discoveries have allowed people suffering from Type 1 diabetes throughout the world to have a chance at living healthier and happier lives. Although his work had not entirely led to a cure for the disease, it had certainly improved quality and duration of life for those suffering from it (Sherman). As an estimated 2 million people in Canada over the age of one year were known to be living with diabetes in 2006-2007 and around 10% of these patients were suffering from Type 1 diabetes, Dr. Banting’s work lives on to define his legacy and his contributions to both his country and to the world as.

A New York resident, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero has a doctor of medicine degree and is currently the professor and vice chairman in the Department of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook Medicine. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero led a clinical trial in which Stony Brook tested a new coronavirus treatment. Convalescent blood plasma therapy was a proposed treatment for coronavirus patients. The therapy consists of transfusing plasma from a person that has recovered from an infection with coronavirus. The therapy was mostly used in patients that were hospitalized or those who recently developed the condition for a few days. Multiple studies showed that the therapy could increase desirable antibodies to COVID, but in general this was not very helpful in terms of likelihood of recovery from the infection or reduction in symptoms.

Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero is a professor of anesthesiology and vice-chair for clinical research at Stony Brook Medicine. Some of Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero's research work focuses on treatment methods for the coronavirus disease, and on the safety of blood transfusions. Blood transfusions are generally safe; however, there is still a possibility of complications. One of such complications is the acute immune hemolytic reaction, in which a person's immune system resists the transfusion and produces antibodies that attack the blood cells. The hemolytic reaction occurs when the donor's blood cells are not compatible with those of the recipient patient. When the immune system fights back against the transfusion, it releases a substance that can damage and harm the kidneys. Acute immune hemolytic reactions may cause symptoms such as fever, bloody urine, or even cause a person to faint. The symptoms may appear during the procedure, or after it ends, and in some cases, a few days after. In extreme cases, the reaction can result in significant damage to a person's internal organs, including acute kidney failure. However, the reaction may pass without major damage to the body system. Doctors treat mild hemolytic reactions with pain relievers such as acetaminophen and in some cases with medications that can prevent kidney failure. Complications like this can be avoided by carefully screening all blood before transfusion.

A respected clinician, dual board-certified in anesthesiology and critical care medicine, Elliott Bennett-Guerrero, MD, is a professor of anesthesiology at Stony Brook Medicine in New York. In addition, he also serves as vice chairman for clinical research and innovation in the department of anesthesiology. At Stony Brook, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero led a significant COVID-19-related randomized trial of convalescent plasma in COVID-19-infected hospitalized patients. In 2021, over three peer-reviewed publications suggested that convalescent plasma could help people recover from COVID-19 infection better, while the viral strain of concern was SARS-CoV- 2. The majority of these publications did not compare the efficacy of convalescent plasma in disease treatment with standard plasma. 2.  Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero graduated from Harvard Medical School. While pursuing his doctor of medicine, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero was selected to participate in Doctors’ Diaries, a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) documentary. Supported by NOVA, a science-based television series, Doctors’ Diaries originally aired in April 2009. The two-hour special documented the lives of seven doctors as they pursued their degrees at Harvard Medical School.

3.  In order to provide a perspective on life after graduation, the doctors were followed by NOVA for two decades as they detailed their journey and the obstacles that shaped them into the professionals they are today. To date, the program is the longest-filmed documentary in the United States about the field of science and medicine. The program was produced and directed by Michael Barnes and scored by Miguel d’Oliveira. Participants from the Harvard Medical School class of 1991 included Dr. Cheryl Dorsey, Dr. Tom Tarter, and Dr. Luanda Grazette, among others.
