Shidham, MD, FRCPath, FIAC (http://pathology.med.wayne.edu/profile.php?id=80608)Dr. Shidham is a recognized leader in the field of cytopathology and surgical pathology. His spectacular career startedin Nagpur (Maharashtra State). After serving in academia in India up to the level of Associate Professor of Pathology atGrant Medical College and JJ Group of Hospitals in Mumbai till 1985, he left for middle east and then to USA. Currentlyhe is Professor of Pathology and Vice Chair- AP at Wayne State University School of Medicine (includes KarmanosCancer Center, Detroit Medical Center, Harper University Hospital, and others), at Detroit, MI in USA.Prior to his board in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and cytopathology in USA after ACGME recognized training,he had also completed his pathology training in India and had Royal College of Pathologists membership from UK.His areas of interest and expertise include cytopathology (fine needle aspiration biopsy- both technical andinterpretation, serous cavity fluid cytopathology, pulmonary cytopathology, intraoperative cytopathology, emergingtechnologies in cytopathology, molecular cytopathology) and surgical pathology (soft tissue tumors, gastrointestinalpathology).He has focused on novel technologies and has invented-developed variety of methods and devices including Shidham’sstain for urate crystal in tissue sections, method for staining air-dried smears with Papanicolaou and HE stain, ‘MCWmelanoma cocktail’ for evaluation of melanoma micrometastases in sentinel lymph nodes, rapid intraoperativeimmunocytochemical evaluation of imprint smears of sentinel lymph nodes for melanoma micrometastases, and specialeasy to use fine needle aspiration biopsy needle device with functional valve. Many of these researches were funded bygrants from various institutions including National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA and Cancer Center of MedicalCollege of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI, USA.He has served in various capacities with many national and international professional organizations. He has publishedextensively and presented at various national-international conferences. He has also contributed various chaptersincluding ‘Respiratory Tract Cytopath0logy’ in Atkinson Atlas of Diagnostic Cytopathology of Serous Effusions(Atkinson BF, ed. Philadelphia, PA: W. B. Saunders Company. Second edition 2004, Chapter 7, p 273-356) and Serouseffusions: reactive, benign and malignant. Chapter 3. In Gray & Kocjan, ed. Diagnostic Cytopathology, Elsevier, 3rdedition. He is co-editor and contributing author in ‘Diagnostic Cytopathology of Serous Cavity Fluid’ (W. B. SaundersCompany, Philadelphia, PA ISBN:141600145X; ISBN-13: 9781416001454). Currently he is writing a monograph onCytopathology of Pancreas to be published as one of the CMAS (CytoJournal Monograph/Atlas Series) for which heis one of the coeditor-in-chief.Dr. Shidham is strong proponent of ‘Open access’ philosophy in academic publications. He is executive editor andeditor-in-chief of ‘CytoJournal” (http://www.cytojournal.com) which is a peer-reviewed, PubMed indexed open accessjournal publishing high quality papers in cytopathology. In addition he serves on editorial boards of other scientificjournals including Diagnostic Pathology, JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments), Journal of Cytology, Lata MedResearch Foundation’s Electronic Journal, Grand Rounds, Pathology Research International, and Journal of PathologyInformatics.
