500 word introduction
1. Introduction
• For this project I would like to look at the combinations of
the elements. Each individual element can be see as
beautiful and non-destructive but when the elements
combine there can either cancel each other out or cause
twice as much damage. Water or even soil added to fire will
put it out; but adding air or even more fire will double the
damage caused. Each element can also be very docile and
non-destructive in a small amount; but when there is a
large amount there can be catastrophic damage as a result.
All natural disasters occur when elements are too strong or
are combined, For example, tsunamis occur when water
and air combine creating massive tidal waves. Wild fires are
often spread but air and spread more vigorously when
there is a lack of water (rain on the ground).
4. • I have chosen these artists as they combine a plant with another
element. Tim Knowles combines tree branches with the wind (air)
and various drawing implements to create pictures literally created
by nature. As the wind blows the tree branch (with attached pen)
moves along the page to create weird line drawings. I like Jon
Shireman’s work as it combines flowers with the element nitrogen
(in liquid form). He then smashes the frozen flowers into little
pieces, this shows the fragility of time in a round about way.
Flowers have a short life span once picked but if frozen they can last
for a longer time. But Shireman then smashes the flowers
destroying them to show how fragile time can be once more.
• To conclude I would like to look at the possible destructive nature of
the elements if combined with other elements and the difference
between a small amount compared to a large amount and the
damage is could cause.
