1. The Darkest Minds
Whats the difference being optimistic and being happy? Happiness is a genuinely
cheerful disposition with a will to be energetic. Optimism is the idea that even if your
outtake on life is dark and hard, you act like everything is ok for the sake of others. In
many instances, people are optimistic in order to stay brave and seem strong in the face
of danger. Liam Stewart definitely fits this mold. He has a messed up home life, is a very
comforting person, and he’s extremely hard on himself. Even though he gets extremely
angry when he messes up, he is constantly forcing himself to be optimistic.
Liam had a really messed up home life. I would never say mine is as bad as his, but
my mom and dad are broken up. I only see my dad three or four times a month, but
Liam doesn’t even know his real dad. Despite his family issues, Liam pushes through
and finds the good in order to keep his mom and step-dad happy. Sure he's upset that
his real dad abandoned him, but he finds comfort in knowing his step-dad will always
have his back. I try to find comfort in the little things as well as be happy around both
parents.
I am that one friend that is always there for you in times of need. No matter what
the situation is in my life, I am there for you with a hug and comforting murmurs. Liam
never stops believing in his friends. When all the odds are against them his pep talks
can keep them going. Liam often hides his emotion, but he is a terrible liar and he

hard to push through, but I keep trying to stay positive and push through it.
Liam is a very hard on himself. He puts this pressure on himself to try and be
perfect in the eyes of his friends. But they would accept him as he really is if he just
stopped trying so hard. My life is extremely hectic and I am in a lot of clubs and
extracurricular activities, but I try to do my best and make all of my work perfect.
Especially when I was younger, I would try to change my personality when I met new
people. I had a lot of insecurity about who I was and I am still finding out who I am.
One way Liam and I are different is that he is very accepting. This is shown when
he accepts the main character (Ruby) to tag along with him and his friends to find a
connection to their families. I am often told that I judge people a lot but I can't help it. I
was raised in a society where social media, gossip, and hate abound. My first instinct
when I meet someone is to find an opinion about them. I am definitely working on this
though and I hope to be a less judgmental person as I grow.
In all, I would say Liam is a pretty good person. He is a natural leader, always going out
of his way to be the sunshine in the storm. I love to lead and enjoy being outgoing as
well. Liam is very comforting and a great friend, and I like to think that I am too. Liam is
very hard on himself to the point of frustration and inner conflict. I am extremely hard on
myself as well.
