ā€¢ Densification is reaching scale
ā€¢ Enterprises need mobile connectivity for business-critical
communications, IoT will accelerate such demand

The scale and urgency is new
ā€¢ Not just about technology change
ā€¢ Densification can start in 4G, as long as there
is a clear 5G roadmap
ā€¢ LTE will live a long time, developing alongside 5G
ā€¢ Real change will be scale:
ā€¢ Hyperdensity in cities, stadiums, some enterprises
ā€¢ Ubiquity for IoT, critical communications, remote
access or mobile base stations

Densification: addressing the barriers to
deployment at scale
Business TCO per small cell site needs to be ~1/10th of macro
New ownership models need to be established for MNO, end users, property owners, IT
service providers, etc.
Operational ā€˜Old schoolā€™ macro processes too expensive and slow
Local administration fragmented, complex & macro orientated
Small cell backhaul must be cheaper, but same performance
Market End users not aware of solutions or donā€™t know how to get them
Operators worried that low cost process may damage $$bn brand
Technology Automation (SON) needed to de-skill deployment
New architectures needed to federate Heterogenous networks
Multi-operator support to address some verticals: venue, hospitality etc.

Densification: addressing the barriers to deployment at scale Business TCO per small cell site needs to be ~1/10th of macro New ownership models need to be established for MNO, end users, property owners, IT service providers, etc. Operational ā€˜Old schoolā€™ macro processes too expensive and slow Local administration fragmented, complex & macro orientated Small cell backhaul must be cheaper, but same performance Market End users not aware of solutions or donā€™t know how to get them Operators worried that low cost process may damage $$bn brand Technology Automation (SON) needed to de-skill deployment New architectures needed to federate Heterogenous networks Multi-operator support to address some verticals: venue, hospitality etc. Interoperability New tech is often vendor proprietary, risking fragmentation Healthy competitive ecosystem requires interoperable standards SCF has working groups addressing each of these areas Ā© Small Cell Forum Ltd 2017

Connecting the unconnected ā€¢ Rural communities: Coverage for underserved community beyond range of normal service. ā€¢ Remote industrial: Coverage for community of workers at a site hard to reach from existing infrastructure. ā€¢ Public safety: Coverage for emergency services and first responders. ā€¢ Disaster recovery/humanitarian: Rapid reinstatement of coverage after extensive damage to mobile infrastructure, and support for ongoing humanitarian efforts. ā€¢ Special events: Services for temporary planned gathering. ā€¢ Military: Service for military personnel. ā€¢ Transportation: Services for passengers and operational needs in all classes of shipping, aircraft and trains.
