Fluids
ā€¢ Substances composed of freely moving
molecules
ā€¢ Have the ability to conform to the shape of the
container that holds them
ā€¢ There are different types of fluids in our bodies
ā€¢ Two-thirds of the bodyā€™s fluid is intracellular fluid
ā€¢ The remaining one-third is extracellular fluid
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Components of Body Fluid
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Fluids (cont.)
ā€¢ Extracellular fluids include
ā€¢ Tissue fluid, found between the cells within
tissues and organs of the body
ā€¢ Plasma, the fluid portion of blood that carries
the blood cells
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Fluids (cont.)
ā€¢ The body fluid composition of tissue varies by
ā€¢ Tissue typeā€”lean tissues have higher fluid
content than fat tissues
ā€¢ Genderā€”males have more lean tissue and
therefore more body fluid
ā€¢ Ageā€”lean tissue is lost with age, and body
fluid is lost with it
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Electrolytes
ā€¢ In intracellular fluid, K+ and HPO4
2ā€“ are the
predominant electrolytes
ā€¢ In extracellular fluid, Na+ and Clā€“ predominate
ā€¢ There is a slight electrical charge difference on
either side of the cell membrane
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Functions of Fluids
ā€¢ Fluids dissolve and transport substances
ā€¢ Water is an excellent solvent because it can
dissolve many different substances
ā€¢ The dissolved materials, or solutes, include
ions, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins,
and minerals
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Functions of Fluids (cont.)
ā€¢ Fluids account for blood volume
ā€¢ Blood volume is the amount of fluid in the
blood
ā€¢ Increased blood volume can cause blood
pressure to rise (hypertension)
ā€¢ Decreased blood volume can cause low
blood pressure
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Functions of Fluids (cont.)
ā€¢ Fluids help maintain body temperature
ā€¢ Because water has a high heat capacity, the
temperature of our body fluids remains quite
stable
ā€¢ Sweating releases heat as the evaporation of
water from the skin cools the skin and blood
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Fluids Help Maintain Body Temperature
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Functions of Fluids (cont.)
ā€¢ Fluids protect and lubricate our tissues
ā€¢ Cerebrospinal fluid protects the brain and
spinal column
ā€¢ Amniotic fluid protects the fetus
ā€¢ Synovial fluid is a lubricant around joints
ā€¢ Digestive secretions allow for easy passage
of material
ā€¢ Pleural fluid covering the lungs allows friction-
free expansion and retraction
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Functions of Electrolytes
ā€¢ Electrolytes help regulate fluid balance
ā€¢ Water follows the movement of electrolytes,
moving by osmosis to areas where the
concentration of electrolytes is high
ā€¢ This allows for the controlled movement of
fluids into and out of cells
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Osmosis

Fluid and Electrolyte Balance
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Functions of Electrolytes (cont.)
ā€¢ Electrolytes enable our nerves to respond to
stimuli
ā€¢ Movement of sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+)
across the membranes of nerve cells changes
the electrical charge across the membrane
ā€¢ This change in electrical charge carries the
nerve impulse along the nerve cell
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Role of Electrolytes in Nerve Function
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Functions of Electrolytes (cont.)
ā€¢ Electrolytes signal our muscles to contract
ā€¢ The movement of calcium (Ca2+) into a
muscle cell stimulates the muscle to contract
ā€¢ The Ca2+ is pumped back out of the cell after
the muscle contraction
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Maintaining Fluid Balance
ā€¢ Fluid balance is maintained by different
mechanisms prompting us to drink and retain
fluid
ā€¢ The thirst mechanism occurs from a cluster of
nerve cells (in the hypothalamus) that stimulate
our desire to drink
ā€¢ However, the thirst mechanism is not always
sufficient; the amount of fluids people drink may
not be enough to achieve fluid balance
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Maintaining Fluid Balance (cont.)
ā€¢ Water lost from the body must be replaced
ā€¢ Water is lost through urine, sweat, evaporation,
exhalation, and feces
ā€¢ Water is gained through beverages, food, and
metabolic reactions
ā€¢ Metabolic water contributes about 10ā€“14% of
the water the body needs
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.

Water Content of Various Foods
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Maintaining Fluid Balance (cont.)
ā€¢ Loss of water
ā€¢ Sensible water loss occurs through urine and
sweat
ā€¢ Most water is lost through urine
ā€¢ The kidneys control how much water is
reabsorbed; excess water is processed by the
kidneys and excreted as urine
ā€¢ Insensible water loss occurs through
evaporation from the skin or exhalation from
the lungs, as well as through feces
ā€¢ Diuretics increase fluid loss via the urine
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Water
ā€¢ Functions of water
ā€¢ Essential for life
ā€¢ Required for fluid and electrolyte balance and
many metabolic reactions
ā€¢ Recommended intake
ā€¢ Varies with environment and activity level
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.

Water (cont.)
ā€¢ Surface water comes from lakes, rivers, and
reservoirs
ā€¢ Groundwater comes from underground rock
formations called aquifers
ā€¢ ā€œHard waterā€ is relatively high in calcium
ā€¢ The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) sets and monitors standards for public
water systems and is responsible for regulation
of bottled water
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.

phosphorus, vitamin D, and, usually, vitamin A
ā€¢ Moderate consumption of beverages with
caffeine is safe and potentially healthful
ā€¢ Most soft drinks, juice drinks, flavored waters,
and bottled tea and coffee drinks are loaded with
added sugars
ā€¢ ā€œDesigner watersā€ with added nutrients and/or
herbs can add more than 300 Calories to the
dayā€™s intake and rarely contribute to better
health
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
Commercial Beverages (cont.)
ā€¢ Many energy drinks, typically consumed quickly,
contain a high amount of caffeine, which can
cause a dramatic rise in blood pressure and
heart rate
ā€¢ They also contain a significant amount of
added sugar
Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.

Chapter 7 FLUID ELECTROLYTES ALCOHOL

  • 1. Chapter 7 Lecture Chapter 7: Nutrients Essential to Fluid and Electrolyte Balance, and In Depth 7.5, Alcohol Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 2. Fluids ā€¢ Substances composed of freely moving molecules ā€¢ Have the ability to conform to the shape of the container that holds them ā€¢ There are different types of fluids in our bodies ā€¢ Two-thirds of the bodyā€™s fluid is intracellular fluid ā€¢ The remaining one-third is extracellular fluid Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 3. Components of Body Fluid Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 4. Fluids (cont.) ā€¢ Extracellular fluids include ā€¢ Tissue fluid, found between the cells within tissues and organs of the body ā€¢ Plasma, the fluid portion of blood that carries the blood cells Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 5. Fluids (cont.) ā€¢ The body fluid composition of tissue varies by ā€¢ Tissue typeā€”lean tissues have higher fluid content than fat tissues ā€¢ Genderā€”males have more lean tissue and therefore more body fluid ā€¢ Ageā€”lean tissue is lost with age, and body fluid is lost with it Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 6. Electrolytes ā€¢ In intracellular fluid, K+ and HPO4 2ā€“ are the predominant electrolytes ā€¢ In extracellular fluid, Na+ and Clā€“ predominate ā€¢ There is a slight electrical charge difference on either side of the cell membrane Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 7. Functions of Fluids ā€¢ Fluids dissolve and transport substances ā€¢ Water is an excellent solvent because it can dissolve many different substances ā€¢ The dissolved materials, or solutes, include ions, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 8. Functions of Fluids (cont.) ā€¢ Fluids account for blood volume ā€¢ Blood volume is the amount of fluid in the blood ā€¢ Increased blood volume can cause blood pressure to rise (hypertension) ā€¢ Decreased blood volume can cause low blood pressure Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 9. Functions of Fluids (cont.) ā€¢ Fluids help maintain body temperature ā€¢ Because water has a high heat capacity, the temperature of our body fluids remains quite stable ā€¢ Sweating releases heat as the evaporation of water from the skin cools the skin and blood Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 10. Fluids Help Maintain Body Temperature Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 11. Functions of Fluids (cont.) ā€¢ Fluids protect and lubricate our tissues ā€¢ Cerebrospinal fluid protects the brain and spinal column ā€¢ Amniotic fluid protects the fetus ā€¢ Synovial fluid is a lubricant around joints ā€¢ Digestive secretions allow for easy passage of material ā€¢ Pleural fluid covering the lungs allows friction- free expansion and retraction Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 12. Functions of Electrolytes ā€¢ Electrolytes help regulate fluid balance ā€¢ Water follows the movement of electrolytes, moving by osmosis to areas where the concentration of electrolytes is high ā€¢ This allows for the controlled movement of fluids into and out of cells Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 13. Osmosis Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 14. Fluid and Electrolyte Balance Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 15. Functions of Electrolytes (cont.) ā€¢ Electrolytes enable our nerves to respond to stimuli ā€¢ Movement of sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) across the membranes of nerve cells changes the electrical charge across the membrane ā€¢ This change in electrical charge carries the nerve impulse along the nerve cell Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 16. Role of Electrolytes in Nerve Function Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 17. Functions of Electrolytes (cont.) ā€¢ Electrolytes signal our muscles to contract ā€¢ The movement of calcium (Ca2+) into a muscle cell stimulates the muscle to contract ā€¢ The Ca2+ is pumped back out of the cell after the muscle contraction Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 18. Maintaining Fluid Balance ā€¢ Fluid balance is maintained by different mechanisms prompting us to drink and retain fluid ā€¢ The thirst mechanism occurs from a cluster of nerve cells (in the hypothalamus) that stimulate our desire to drink ā€¢ However, the thirst mechanism is not always sufficient; the amount of fluids people drink may not be enough to achieve fluid balance Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 19. Maintaining Fluid Balance (cont.) ā€¢ Water lost from the body must be replaced ā€¢ Water is lost through urine, sweat, evaporation, exhalation, and feces ā€¢ Water is gained through beverages, food, and metabolic reactions ā€¢ Metabolic water contributes about 10ā€“14% of the water the body needs Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • 20. Fluid Balance Ā© 2018 Pearson Education, Inc.
