2. Vocabulary
Lens – The eyeball of the camera ; how
the camera sees what your
photographing
Flash – Artificial light produced to light
up your picture
Shutter – The “blinking” of your camera;
the shutter allows light in and out
Memory Card – The “brain” of your
camera ; how your camera remembers
the pictures you took.
Viewfinder – What YOU look through to
see what you’re taking a picture of
3. ISO? What is
that?
ISO measures the sensitivity of your
sensor in your camera. Light goes very,
very fast but your ISO speed is how fast
you want your camera to take in that
light.
ISO can go from 1 second to 1/32th of a
second. Crazy, huh?!
For those of you with Canon Rebels, you
have a special ISO button where you can
change your ISO. Many of you have
cameras that already have the ISO sensor
built in.
Keep in mind with ISO:
The lower the ISO number (100) the
brighter it is
The higher the ISO number is (3200) the
darker it is
6. What is Focal
Length?
Focal Length is how
far your camera
lens can see.
Different focal
lengths are used for
different types of
photography.
Focal length mostly
ranges between
10mm-
300mm
The Canon Rebels
have a basic 18-
55mm and a 70-
300mm lens
attachment
7. What kind of
lenses are
there?
Lenses can range
about like dogs
can. There are
tons.
There are special
lenses for special
photographs
(portraits, zoom)
Wide Angle Lens
Fish Eye Lens
8. What are
filters?
Think about when you put
on sunglasses. Filters are
sunglasses for your
camera.
Cameras can get damaged
by the sun. Filters help
prevent that (UV filters)
Some filters are colored
which add cool effects to
your photos.
Filters can also change the
context of your photo
Example: Make it blurry
9. Long
exposure of
Light
Remember the
shutter? It cuts on
and off the light
that comes into the
camera. You can
leave your shutter
open longer for
something called
“long exposure”
This is what it looks
like:
10. Rule of Thirds
This is an art concept
that you don’t have to
follow.
Divide your photo into a
grid. You’re going to put
your most interesting
part of your photo where
the grid lines intersect.
Or not, you
decide.
