5. I. Author’s Introduction
Habits have always ingrained themselves in every choice I decided on in my life. It came down to
a very simple backbone nature. How to form good habits? Habits. Are they not what make us
successful in life? In fact, if both women and men practice in playing out their good habits, who
can say they won’t triumph? I didn’t want to strike at another rampant atrocity and write about
women being treated poorly in Africa, but I’d rather come to terms and massage a basic principle,
one that needs to be remembered, and not just for women, but for men and for everyone living
in a once peaceful world.
It seemed like a wonderful take to fortifying lifestyle changes and long-term goals. I imagined my
readers taking on their habit goals, and their long-term goals vividly registering in their minds or
their notepads what to and what not to do. I came to feel for them, “Are all my readers
emotionally, mentally prepared to follow my rituals?” So that day turned into weeks, and weeks
turned into months of a new project I invested with much delight, dedication, hard work, and
research. And that was how it’s gotten me to writing this book.

6. II. Habits
Habit: Definition
What is a habit? I am sure that you have your own understanding and definition of the
word habit. But first and foremost, we should come to the point that you are reading
this book because you may have a bad habit you want to correct, or that there is a
good habit you are hoping to form, vice versa, and all good intentions. Before getting
to the topics on habit formation, motivation, willpower, habit stacking, and rituals, let
us start from level one: knowing the exact definition of the word.
Do you know how the word habit came about? Its origins, was taken from the Old
French word abit, from Latin habitus, meaning appearance or condition, and later
understood to describe a mental or physical state.

7. III. Habits and Your Brain
Your Brain and How Habits Work Around It
“The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts the moment you get up and doesn’t stop until you
get into the office.”
Let me tell you something about habits and the brain. If you were to change the latter, then
habit creation would be as easy as saying the letters A, B, C. So if I ask, what does our brain
need? Again, all that it takes is a little repetition.
In fact, neuroplasticity, a science that refers to neural pathway changes due to alteration in
behavior, thinking, environment etc., such as repetition, states that the brain does not
cease to be adjustable, dynamic, as it easily adapts to new situations and ideas. Such an
example can be said about patients who have gone through stroke or other mental disorder
that have altered their thinking. They are still able to train different sections of their brain
through repetition.

8. IV. Motivation and Willpower
Let’s start with motivation. Motivation is the influence, the instrument that guides and
governs our desires and will in life. For example, sleepiness is a motivation that elicits one
to take a nap or a long night’s sleep. Research shows that we have the capacity to influence
our motivation levels and self-control. So scientifically speaking, motivation is the basis of
our actions, needs, or desires. Based on studies, it reveals how impacting motivation is to
our behavioral, cognitive, physiological, and social facets. It explains how we behave, and
the critical element when setting and achieving our goals.
Willpower on the other hand, is the ability to fight against temptation, the ability to control
one’s desires, emotions, or attention. Willpower averts from short-lived temptations to
grow potential in meeting long-term goals. If you have the willpower, you have strong self-
control. Willpower sets the fine line between a bad habit and an obsession, addiction, or
mental illness. If one has the self-control required for certain behaviors, it is merely a habit,
and not an obsession, addiction, or mental illness.

9. V. Habits Turned Rituals
While all of us have established our own habits, whether it’s making tea in the middle
of the afternoon, or calling a close friend before bed, a habit develops without us
having the full intention of it in the first place. We simply start doing it more often
than the first unconsciously. It becomes customary. Rituals on the other hand, are
actions performed with much intent and focus. It is a somewhat faithful, formal, and
detailed procedure carrying meaning. Rituals vary across cultures, religions and
organizations. So when we pick our habits well, and are consistent in performing them
day after day, they turn into rituals and mastered over time. Rituals are the
cornerstones to our greatest successes in life. According to William James,
psychologist, “Ritual frees our minds to advance to really interesting fields of action.”

10. V. Conclusion
The person that you are, the person that you will become, and the things that you will
accomplish are governed by the quality of the habits you carry out each day of your
life.
Do well to remember how your brain entrenches a habit, and how you can use its
power to create masterful ones. Realize your drawbacks, step forward and start
overcoming them this day and the next. Make use of working techniques such as habit
stacking to your advantage. Train yourself with the willpower to make every day a
stepping stone to success, without relying on simple motivation. And finally, create
and practice day-to-day, small, but effectual habits for your personal and professional
success!
