The Kenya Universities Professional Counsellors
Association (KUPCA) is composed of professional
counsellors, who practice counselling in Kenya’s
private and public universities.
A BRIEF HISTORY
The Kenya Universities Professional Counsellors
Association (KUPCA) was founded in 2005 as a
forum for training student peer counsellors. It has
since its inception been supported by the univer-
sity management of various universities.
Four universities attended the first meeting
namely, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture
and Technology (JKUAT), University of Nairobi
(UoN), the Catholic University of Eastern Africa
(CUEA) represented by Tangaza College.
In October, 2007 it was agreed that other univer-
sities be incorporated. KUPCA membership has
since grown considerably with KUPCA being
officially registered in Kenya in January 2011,
after a process of vetting by the National Security
Intelligence Services (NSIS).
KUPCA is a non profit making, non political, non
religious, non ethnic and non gender biased asso-
ciation.The Association is based on a strong pillar
of professional standards and ethical practice.
KUPCA has over the past few years evolved to
broaden its mandate and is guided by a constitu-
tion, a code of conduct, a democratically elected
KUPCA executive and committed members from
varied Institutions of higher learning.
MEMBERSHIP
Currently KUPCA membership incorporates over
100 counsellors from over 20 universities and
constituent colleges. KUPCA membership
continues to grow with the rapid expansion of
universities.
Membership is open to all counsellors / psycholo-
gists with postgraduate training who work with
students at university level.

To be a distinguished world class universities
professional counsellors organization for the
enhancement, growth and development of
humanity.
MISSION
To promote professional psychological well being
through counselling , proactive outreach
programming , training , Counsellor supervision ,
research, crisis intervention in universities and the
community at large..

KUPCA members are committed to the wholis-
tic education, growth, development and general
well being of their clients.
KUPCA members are involved in the facilitation
of
Counselling services for individuals, and
groups, through face –face counselling,
or through, telephone and e-counselling
on varied non-clinical and clinical
concerns.

Career and other events
Outreach services to the university and
surrounding community.
Training /workshops /sensitization
programmes, talks etc on varied topics
(e.g. Life Skills; Basic counselling and
communication skills for outreach
purposes; Values AndIntegrity;; Self
Awareness and Leadership; Behaviour

ment; HIV prevention and management
and other health concerns; Alcohol and
drug abuse, prevention and management
etc).
