12. Alcatraz Facts
Alcatraz operated as a federal prison for 29 years.
During Alcatraz's 29 years as a federal prison there were 14 escape
attempts by 36 prisoners. Six prisoners were shot dead. Two
drowned. Five went missing and were believed to have drowned. 23
prisoners were caught alive.
It cost $10 a day to house prisoners on Alcatraz as opposed to $3 a
day on the mainland.
Alcatraz was too expensive to maintain and
Robert F. Kennedy, ordered the federal prison
to be closed on March 21st, 1963.
People can now visit Alcatraz, which was
added to the National Register of Historic
Places in 1976.
14. Yosemite national park
20% of California's 7,000 plant species are found within
Yosemite.
There are 500 giant sequoias in Yosemite, which can live up
to 3,000 years. They are thought to be the largest living
things on the planet.
The mountains located in Yosemite still grow about one
foot every 1,000 years.
There is still approximately 225,000 acres of old growth
forest left in Yosemite.
About 3.5 million people visit Yosemite each year.

Every year, more than 1.6 million people visit the park
There are 275 caves that have been discovered, but many
scientists believe there are many more that they have yet to
uncover.
Sequoia National Park weather is also very fascinating. Each
year, Ash Mountain receives approximately 25.4 inches of rain
and only 1 inch of snow.
There are 26 different types of evergreen trees here.
One of the more popular Sequoia National Park tours includes
a journey called Trail of 100 Giants. This is a hiking tour that
brings you the place where the oldest and biggest trees live.
Many are between 500 and 1500 years in age.
