Daily Situation Report of Flood Affected Districts of Balochistan Province (August 31st, 2022)
Situation Overview:
In Balochistan, 34 districts and at least 9,182,616 people have been affected,
including 253 people who died and 164 people injured as of 31 August 2022,
according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). More than
700,000 livestock have died across Pakistan, of which some 500,000 are
reported in Balochistan province, where livestock is a critical source of
sustenance and livelihood for many families. At least 17,608 houses have been
destroyed and another 44,110 houses partially damaged. In addition to houses
and croplands, 1,000 km of roads and 18 bridges have also been damaged and
impede access across flood-affected areas. Internet outages have also been
reported, with the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority attributing
widespread internet cuts in central and northern Pakistan on 19 August to
technical faults in the fiberoptic network resulting from the heavy rains and
floods

Ongoing Response:
• The integrated medical camps & other emergency activities are
continued in affected districts.
• The Nutrition and WASH Cluster is activated and services provision to
severely affected districts with the support of partners has been
initiated.
• The overall situation regarding health problems/outbreaks in all affected
districts is under control.
Challenges and Gaps
• Lack of healthcare workers, as personnel may be unable to
reach healthcare facilities or are themselves among the
affected population.
• Limited stocks of emergency medicines, essential supplies
• This is exacerbated by the constraint of physical access to
flood-affected people.
• The collapse of a major link bridge and roads in Balochistan
is now a major logistics challenge preventing the movement
of supplies from warehouses to affected people. DoH and
Partners continue to find alternative measures to ensure
supplies gets to the people in dire need
Recommendation
• Create awareness and social mobilization
regarding water born disease (AWD)
• Relocation of people to higher ground areas
to avoid further damage.
• Create awareness and sensitization on the
dangers of flooding, and strictly follow the
Early Warning Early Response concept.
• Reinforce existing structures to prevent
further damages.
Need:
• Immediate assessment of the health services impacted, identification of
key priority areas requiring a response, including for the delivery of
routine and emergency health services.
• Increased need for essential medicines and equipment to set up
emergency triage, medical tents, mosquito nets, folding beds,
facemasks, and hand sanitizers outside health facilities.
• Mitigation of the risk of outbreaks of communicable/infectious diseases,
particularly in camps and where WASH facilities have been damaged.
• Prevention of transmission of diseases in camps and communities through
information and hygiene campaigns in coordination with the WASH
cluster.
• Mental health and psychosocial impact of losses including human lives,
animals, property, and livelihoods. Response:
• Health status monitoring for acute watery diarrhea (AWD), Cholera, and
other communicable diseases.
• Outreach and facility-based medical services, including maternal,
neonatal, and child health (MNCH) and nutritional
