2. Introduction
Edwin Hammond Meredith enjoys spending time on
the water. When he is not sailing or scuba diving,
Edwin Hammond Meredith likes to stay active by
surfing.
Surfing will be contested at the 2020 summer games
in Tokyo for the first time in Olympic history, as part of
a new International Olympic Committee (IOC)
program that allows host nations to include regionally
popular sports as part of the Olympic program.
Despite never having been featured on an official
program, surfing does have something of an Olympic
history. Duke Kahanamoku, one of the sport’s most
renowned pioneers, launched the first campaign to
include surfing in Olympic competition more than five
decades ago.
3. Tokyo Olympics
The IOC decision to approve surfing was
unanimous, with all 90 international members
voting in favor. Contrary to early speculation,
surfing events will not be held in an artificial
arena, but in the ocean. Shidashita Beach in
Chiba, the proposed site for Olympic surfing, was
selected after an extensive meteorological survey
of the proposed area. Unlike other Olympic
events, the surfing competition has no schedule
start date. Instead, the event will begin when
conditions allow, and last for two days.
