2. The Census Bureau Report
In 2017, the U.S. Census Bureau released a population report, and the details highlight the movements
of residents, particularly domestic migration.
According to it, the country’s population went up by more than two million from 2016 to 2017. Overall,
there were 325.7 million people.
California had the most number of people in 2017 with 39.5 million residents. Following it was Texas
with 28.3 million. Florida, on the other hand, took the third spot at 20.9 million.

Upon closer inspection, it turns out the population growth is slow. In fact, the pace has been the
slowest it has ever been since the 1930s.
Domestically, the population changes among states also vary significantly. Simply because one state
has the most number of people, it does not immediately mean it also has the fastest growth.

3. However, California did not have the highest numeric growth within the period. This position belonged
to Texas, which added almost 400,000 residents. California now placed third while Florida was in the
second place.
The Gold State, meanwhile, was nowhere among the top 10 states with the highest percentage growths.
Taking the first place this time was Idaho, with a growth of 2.2%. Nevada then followed at 2%. Florida
now fell on the fifth place with 1.6%.
Reason for the Differences: Migration
Population numbers can change for three reasons: natural births, deaths, and migration. Utah, for
example, increased its residents due to natural births. Most of the states, though, increased or
decreased their population with migration, particularly domestic.
Both Idaho and Nevada boosted their population due to domestic migration. The percent change
between those living and moving to Idaho, for example, was 14.6%. In Florida, it was 7.8%. California,
on the other hand, fell by 3.5%. New York was also one of the losers at -9.6%.
The report did not provide the reasons behind migration, but it only goes to show for the Americans,
nothing is permanent, including their address.
