The Role of DEFENCES, in the
INTEGRAL LIFE CHANGE PROCESS
(the last slideshow discussed resistance as an example of one defence -- Here
we discuss the others)

ALL DEFENCES lead to CONFLICT, because they lead us away
from “WHO WE TRULY ARE”.
And somewhere within us, WE KNOW THAT.
So, though DEFENCES are strategies that seem to work, they can ONLY
lead to more CONFLICT.

AND to Dis-ease, Dis-Harmony, and Suffering.
Such is the DESIRE to be “RIGHT” however,
We persist with our precious strategies,
despite the negative consequences,
and despite the fact they clearly do not work.

OUR INNER SKILLS, or INNER STRENGTHS are;
MIND, HEART, BREATH, and ENERGY.
Used CONGRUENTLY, and WITHOUT defences,
these are POWERFUL RESOURCES INDEED.
Let’s look at each one...

MIND
The mode of operation is THOUGHT.
The defence is JUDGEMENT.
What I judge, is related to PERCEPTION, which is very UNRELIABLE.
Therefore there is bound to be CONFLICT. With ANY defence the
EXPERIENCE will be CONFLICT!

The ONLY SOLUTION
is to WATCH YOUR THOUGHTS,
and ask YOURSELF,
DO I WANT THIS THOUGHT ANYMORE?
Does it even serve me well?

HEART
The mode of operation, is FEELINGS, and EMOTIONS.
The defence is RESISTANCE.
What I resist, I believe has disappeared, but it has NOT.
Therefore there is bound to be CONFLICT. With ANY defence the

The ONLY SOLUTION
is to MANAGE, YOUR EMOTIONS, and FEELINGS,
and ask YOURSELF,
DO I WANT TO RESIST THIS ANYMORE?
Does resistance even serve me well?

BREATH
The mode of operation is BELIEFS.
The defence is ATTACHMENT.
What I believe I “need”, OUTSIDE of my SELF, is an ATTACHMENT.
Therefore, there is bound to be CONFLICT. With ANY defence, the

The ONLY SOLUTION
is to QUESTION YOUR BELIEFS,
and ask YOURSELF,
DO I WANT TO BELIEVE THIS ANYMORE?
Does this belief even serve me well?

ENERGY
The mode of operation is ACTIONS.
The defence is PROJECTION.
PROJECTION “sets it up”, so that ANY ACTION seems justified.
Therefore, there is bound to be CONFLICT. With ANY defence, the

The ONLY SOLUTION
is to ASSESS YOUR ACTIONS,
and ask YOURSELF,
DO I WANT TO DO THIS ANYMORE?
Does it even serve me well?

If OUR INNER RESOURCES are ACTIVATED,
without defences,
THE EXPERIENCE should be;
1. Enhanced personal responsibility and control
2. Improved relationships
3. Clarity of purpose
4. Increased sense of gratitude
5. Expansion of choice
6. Awareness of self
7. Stillness of mind

integral approach where we value sharing, over individualism, and caring over
conflict. To achieve these goals my focus is on areas where the most change
