We’ve transformed our gala
weekend to include a nine hole,
artist-designed minigolf course.
Hole number one starts in the theater
and the custom made, arts-themed course winds around the building, ending
in the big top where there is live music and dancing. Family golf starts Friday
night for $5 or $15 a family/group of four. A youth Battle of the Bands takes
the main stage on Saturday from 3-6pm for $10. Contestants compete for a
$500 cash prize. Deadline to enter is May 24. The main Gala begins at 7pm.
The kick off to summer returns to the SCA grounds with a
bang.. or the thwack of a putter. $20 presale tickets
/ $25 at the Door. $10 to compete in the golf
tournament.

2. SUMMER KIDS WORKSHOPS

WHERE WE STAND: BRANDON BELL: May 28
Bell, a teaching fellow at Rice University and the Percussion Manager
at the Aspen Music Festival, presents new and recent works for solo
percussion. $10. 7pm at the Mongerson Theater. First in a series of
summer percussion performances.
NEWCOMERS: Artist’s Talk May 29
An exhibit of photographic portraits of refugee immigrants to the
Buffalo, NY area. As one of handful of US cities that host refugee
resettlement, Buffalo, NY is an Ellis Island for a new era. From 2010-2011
alone, 3000 refugees from countries like Burma, Somalia and Bhutan have found new lives
here. As an adult ESL instructor with the Buffalo Public Schools, Costello had the honor of
working with recent arrivals on a daily basis. A recent NYFA Independent Artist Commission
recipient, Costello’s work has been exhibited internationally. She is a member of the New
York Times Freelance Pool and the American Society of Media Photographers. On display at
Art’s Underground through June 7. Visit with Lukia during an informal artist’s talk on May 29

AUDITIONS - CHICAGO: June 2 & 3
Our annual summer SLAM musical theater show is always a
blockbuster and Springville is about to get jazzy with Chicago.
Work with your peers and adult advisors to stage a Broadway
show. Rehearsals begin in June after school and transition to
afternoons and evenings when school lets out. Open to those
entering High School through College. Position for crew also
available. $60 participation fee includes four tickets to the show
July 24 - August 3. Made possible with support by SYI. Auditions

Oh No! It’s Opera! : June 6
Produced by The Nickel City opera. Professional singers present selections
from popular operas, art songs, Broadway and jazz including a preview of
NCO’s Tosca by Puccini. Featuring Valerian Ruminski, James Wright, Jena
Abati, Jay Dref, Stephen MacDonald and more. 7:30pm. $12.

The Essence of Time: View Finders Photography Exhibit:
June 11 - July 18
The NY and CA chapters of View Finders, directed by Bonita Chimes, will present their
photographic interpretation of “The Essence of Time.” All photographs are taken
through the lens with no digital manipulation. Exhibit Reception June 11 at 6pm at Arts
Underground, 66 East Main Street.

WHAT IS ART’S CAFE?? June 17
What is Art’s Cafe? You tell us. Come to this public input session where the plans for the
space at 5 East Main Street will be unveiled. The project includes a coffee shop, secondary
performance stage, workshops space with pottery studio, artist residencies, and a publicly
accessible green roof. We are seeking input on everything from the types of programs you
would like to see to what kind of coffee you want to drink. June 17 at 7pm. 37 N Buffalo

INTRO TO IMPROV WORKSHOP: June 21
Learn basic structures and skills needed to perform improv comedy
similar to Whose Line is it Anyway. With members of our resident

SPARK! & SPARK! II: Begins July 8
For kids who like to tinker, doodle, imagine and
create. Session one is for ages 2-5 and, running
concurrently, Session II is for ages 5-7. 66 East Main Street. Six

CLASSIC PORTRAITS: July 9 & 16
This workshop by Lukia Costello (see Newcomers) covers the
fundamentals necessary to create beautiful head and shoulder portraits
including: natural and augmented light, posing, direction and communication. Class
includes lecture and demonstration followed by directed practice. Second session involves
