Power Consumption
 Unit Price : 1458 VND/ kWh.
 Example:
1. Air conditioned - Power: 1000W.
 Operate within 10 hour/day.
 Operate 30 days.
 Power consumption : 1000W x 10h x 30 = 300kWh.
2. Light bulb - Power: 100W.
 Operate (turn on) 30 days.
 Within 1 day, turn on (operate) 10 hour.
 Power consumption: 100W x 10h x 30 = 3000Wh = 30kWh.
3. Total money has to pay = (300 + 30) x 1458 = 481,140 (VND)

 Power Supply : 240W.
 HP Compaq 8200 Elite Series.pdf (page 22).
2. HP Compaq LE2202X.
 Power Consumption: Typical 26W.
 HP Compaq LE2202x.pdf ( page 2 ).
10/12/20156
Real Case ( 3 )
 Equation to calculate power consumption within 1
month for all associates.
 PwC ( Power Consumption ).
 P ( Power ).
 H ( Total hours that devices operated ).
 D ( Total days per month, assume 31 days ).
 HC ( Head count, assume 500 associates ).
 PwC = P x H x D x HC = P x H x 31 x 500
 Equation to calculate total money to pay
 ToTM ( Total money ).
 UP ( Unit Price ).
 ToTM = PwC x UP = P x H x 31 x 500 x UP
10/12/20157
Real Case ( 4 )
 Apply those equation into assumed
situation.
 HP Compaq 8200 Elite Small Form Factor.
= HP_8200_ESF.
 HP Compaq LE2202X
= HP_LE2202X.
10/12/20158
Real Case ( 5 )
Assumed maximum power
consumption
1. PwC ( HP_8200_ESF )
= P x H x 31 x 500
= 240W x 24h x 31 x 500
= 89,280,000Wh
= 89,280kWh
2. PwC ( HP_LE2202X )
= P x H x 31 x 500
= 26W x 24h x 31 x 500
= 9,672,000Wh
= 9,672kWh
3. ToTM = PwC x UP = ( 89,280 + 9,672 ) x 1458 = 144,272,016 (VND) =
6,871 (USD) ( per month )
10/12/20159
How To Reduce Power
Consumption?
 Want to save money
 MUST save power consumption.
 HOW?
• PwC = P x H x D x HC = P x H x 31 x 500
 Reduce the total time of using devices.
 Reduce power consumption.
 Reduce total money has to pay.
10/12/201510
How To Reduce Power
Consumption? ( 1 )
 Let ASSUME start working time is 9 AM.
 Let ASSUME last working time is 9 PM.
( mean most associates finish their work and
leave office ).
 So we can set hibernate time is 9 PM.
 And total time for computers to operate is
12 hours.
10/12/201511
How To Reduce Power
Consumption? ( 2 )
 ToTM = PwC x UP = ( 89,280 + 9,672 ) x
1458 = 144,272,016 (VND) = 6,871 (USD) (
per month )
 New_ToTM = ( ( 89,280 + 9,672 ) /2 ) x 1458
= 72,136,008 (VND) = 3,436 (USD) (per
month)
 Saved money = 6,781 – 3,436 = 3,345
(USD) (per month).
10/12/201512
How To Reduce Power
Consumption? ( 3 )
 Most associates after one working day, they
still let their computers still operate EVEN there
is no specific reasons that require them to let
their computers operate. So most computers
will operate 24 hours per day.
 Why ????
 First reason : most associates fell LAZY when
push button to turn off/hibernate computers.
 Second reason : most associates think these are
company properties so they don’t care about
that ( or common father no one cries ).
10/12/201513
How To Reduce Power
Consumption? ( 4 )
 Solution ???
 Apply new policy, all associates MUST turn off
or hibernate computers before leaving office.
 It seems impossible.
 Most associates feel uncomfortable when
someone try to enforce them MUST do
something ( natural psychology of human
beings ).
 They feel still LAZY and don’t care about
company properties.
10/12/201514
How To Reduce Power
Consumption? ( 5 )
 New Solution ???
 Configure network system in order to
automatically hibernate designated computers at
specific time.
 It means reduce total time of using computers, so
that reduce total money has to pay.
 It seems possible.
 Constraints:
 MUST understand network system.
 Modify/Configure/Access Server and Client.
 MUST have granted right from IT Manager.
10/12/201515
How To Reduce Power
Consumption? ( 6 )
 Developed a small Perl script.
 Execute on DHCP server or specific server
which manage all client computers.
 Set time to automatically hibernate
designated client computers.
10/12/201516
How To Reduce Power
Consumption? ( 7 )
 Already applied on virtual environment (
virtual machine , VMWare … ) and was
successfully.
 However in order to deploy in reality,
MUST know network system architecture
and server information.
 After that, modify scripts to adapt the
reality.
