Green It

 1. 1. NOMAN NOOR BS(CS) 7900
 2. 2.

It describes the study and the using of computer resources in an efficient way.

Green IT starts with manufacturers producing environmentally friendly products and encouraging IT departments to consider more friendly options like virtualization.

power management and proper recycling habits.

maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime. ,

What is GREEN IT OR GREEN COMPUTING
 3. 3. Why Green IT?

Save Money

Save energy

Save in cooling

Reduce carbon emissions

Save space in server room and desktop

 4. 4. Approaches to green computing

Virtualization

Display

Terminal Servers

Power management

 5. 5. Virtualization

Computer virtualization refers to the abstraction of computer resources

The concept originated with the IBM mainframe operating systems of the 1960s, but was commercialized for x86-compatible computers only in the 1990s.

With virtualization, a system administrator could combine several physical systems into virtual machines on one single, powerful system, thereby unplugging the original hardware and reducing power and cooling consumption.

E.g.:- the process of running two or more logical computer systems on one set of physical hardware.

 6. 6. Virtualization
 7. 7. Do you know? Companies can reap a 65%reduction in server count through virtualization.
 8. 8. Display

Use LCD or LED display in place of CRT monitor

Less amount of energy used in this practice

More healthy enviroment.

 9. 9. Do you know?

PCs with a screensaver going can use well over 100Wof power, compared with only about 10Win sleep mode.

 10. 10. Terminal Servers

Terminal servers have also been used in green computing methods.

When using terminal servers, users connect to a central server; all of the computing is done at the server level but the end user experiences the operating system.

These can be combined with thin clients, which use up to 1/8 the amount of energy of a normal workstation, resulting in a decrease of energy costs and consumption.

Examples of terminal server software:-Terminal Services for Windows, the Aqua Connect Terminal Server for Mac

 11. 11. Terminal Servers
 12. 12. Power management

Implement power management system at administrative level

allows an operating system to directly control the power saving aspects of its underlying hardware.

This allows a system to automatically turn off components such as monitors and hard drives after set periods of inactivity.

Power managements benefits includes:- Saving energy

Saving time, reduce energy cost, life of hardware will increase etc.

 13. 13. Do you know? Companies can save between $25 and $75 on power bills per PC per year by powering down machines when they're not in use.
 14. 14. Power consumption
 15. 15. Who can do Green IT?

Anyone in control of a computer/s and related hardware

System Administrators

Equipment manufacturers

Computer assemblers

IT sales personnel

IT project contract authors

Project Managers

 16. 16. DATA CENTERS
 17. 17. Do you know?

Data centers produce 0.3% of the world's CO2 emissions.

Data center energy use in 2005 was 152billion kWh.

1.2% of USA energy use is consumed by data centers. Which corresponds with

0.8% of the world energy use.

 18. 18. Present data centers.

Applying green Computing approach

They are using Power Usage Effectiveness methods.

Adopt Virtualization technologies.
