4. Acc. to Acharya Sushruta, rasayana deals with the methods of withholding
ageing, increasing life-span, intellegence, strength and capacity to get rid of
diseases.(Su.Su.1.7)
Acc. to Acharya Charaka, from rasayana one can achieve long life, better
recollection, increased intellect, healthy body and mind, youth fullness, good
complexion, good voice, abundance of body and sense organ strength,
increased luster. (Ch.chi.1-1.7-8)
Acc. to Acharya Vagbhata, rasayana is the cyclic pathway of balanced
nutrition. It is the best means of keeping the rasa and other dhatus in
excellent condition. (Ah.U.39.2)
 Charaka, Susrutha and Vagbhata have mentioned that rasayana imparts
indriya bala.

5. Rasayana which can be adopted in Netra Roga
Naimittika Rasayana
The concept of naimitika rasayana appears to be a subsequent development in
rasayana-tantra where specific rasayana were concieved for use in patients of specific
disease. The concept emerges in sushruta-samhita and is more cleatly stated by
Dalhana. Specific role of certain rasayana in the care and cure of specific disease such
as triphala is one of the best Naimitika rasayana in Timira roga.
Achara Rasayana
The code of conduct which helps to maintain the health of the vision is
explained under the dinacharya can be attributed to achara rasayana for netra.

13. Mode of Action
The dravyas and ahara used in rasayana contain antioxidants which
inhibits the oxidation process and the production of free radicals causing
damage to the cells. The answer to prevent all these is employing Rasayana in
our daily needs.
 The role of super oxide dismutase of the rasayana drugs also catalyzes the
dismutation of super oxide radical in to an ordinary molecular oxygen by
maintaining the physiology of the eye and rebuilt the ageing tissue and
extending the length of that particular tissue.

14.  Immuno-modulatory action of the drugs is an effective as well as
protective approach in many eye disorders whether primary or secondary
like Retinopathy, Uveitis, Age related macular disorders.
 Presence of glutathione and ascorbate dose anti-aging action and does the
physiological protection against oxidative damage of lens and helps to
maintain the transparency of lens.
 Nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B1(thiamin),
VitaminB2(riboflavin),Vitamin B12(cobalamine), Vitamin B6(pyridoxin),
Vitamin D, Beta-Carateoids, Cystine, present in chakshushya dravyas
protect the eye from the free radical damage and prevents the diseases like
macular degeneration.

15.  The content of poly phenols and tannins are responsible for radio-
protecting ability in the disease like Pterygium, Cataract, Catarrhal
conjunctivitis.
 Presence of cystine helps to repair the protein present in the Lens.
 Presence of Zinc helps to store vitamin A in retina.

16. CONCLUSION

Prasannaatmendriyamana swastha ityabhideeyate”
(Su.Su.15.41)
A healthy person is whose humors and metabolic state are in
equilibrum, whose functional activities of the tissues and excretory products
are in balance, the soul, senses and mind feel well. With regards to this,
rasayana plays an important role in aspects of attaining health, which is one
of the main motto of Ayurveda.

17. Each cell membrane in the body is lipid soluble and most of our rasayanas
have gritha/sneha in one or the other form and by this mode its effects reaches
each and every microcellular part of the body including the occular tissues.
The various chakshusya dravyas mentioned in our classics are rich sources
of macro and micro nutrients like sorbitol, glucose, fructose, glycogen,
mucoprotein, calcium, zinc , gluctathione, vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C,
vitamin K, vitamin B1
